    Hong Kong Aquaria

I was in Mong Kok, but have since left HK now for my stop over in Taiwan and returning to NZ later today. I didn't really do much touristy stuff, since I go once every 2 years on average. Did see wet markets several times while my friends/relatives went shopping for our hotpot dinner, and also went to Ocean park.

    Hong Kong Aquaria

I'm rarely on the forums nowadays, but since I've been in Hong Kong the last few weeks and lived right next to the famous "goldfish street" I've gotten quite curious about some of the things I've seen. Unfortunately I only spent a short time there, and no photos since they don't allow any. First thing I saw and found fascinating was a small trumpet shaped snail with bright yellow skin. Plus some flecked marking on the shell. The second awesome thing I've seen was a stunning aquascape with an underwater (sand) waterfall. While I've seen them on YouTube before, I thought they looked a little fake and tacky, but this one used something like silica sand and looked absolutely amazing in real life. Last thing that I was really curious about are a kind of nano fish I saw. They were tiny, the same size as the tiny shrimps sold in the store. They looked like bumblebee gobies, but black and white instead of yellow, and I think they were some kind of suckerfish or catfish. Anyone have any idea what they could have been?
  3. Hmm I've been working on the design, and since i'm not that familiar with sumps overflows and siphons I thought I've post a rudimentary diagram of the plumbing here and see if there are any obvious flaws or problems I might have missed. I'm particularily concerned with the overflow, would it be able to take from the bottom rather than the top of the tank to remove solid waste? The aquaponics method I'm going for is flood and drain via bell siphon. Red is the water being pumped into growbed, yellow is the path of the water out. Any pointers would really be appreciated.
  4. Thanks guys! Haha even without names, I can kinda tell which are from the fish-keepers. They leave nice detailed responses
  5. Just had a quick check to make sure I'm not breaking any forum rules, but I've made a little survey for my project so if anyone has a few minutes to spare, I'd be interested in hearing your views: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/N33GQLJ It's basically to get an overview of what people's opinions are on fish-keeping and gardening, and also to see if there are any overlaps (eg. whether people who keep fish are more likely to like plants too and vice versa) and whether there are any trends.
  6. I like it :cophot: ! Interesting that you have aquatic plants as week as the plants up the top. Guess it's still an option to have submerged plants if not purely after rapid growth of the non-aquatic plants?
  7. Neat! Sounds like a relatively simple fix then. Seems aquaponics is very much like fish keeping, can make it as simple (raft method) or as complex as you like.
  8. How do you guys prevent root rot? Is it not an issue as long as there's enough dissolved oxygen/aeration?
  9. Wow! That's more than I expected from a 30L tank !
  10. Did you have any aquatic plants in your system? That more or less the kind of small in-home system I'm thinking of designing, more to add some nutrients to aid the growth of a few herbs and get something back from the system rather than trying to get lush rapid harvests. I think one of the main reason aquaponics really appeals to me is that I'm not good with remembering to water indoor plants, and this is a way to get plants and ornamental fish both with less maintenance.
  11. Yep! I've seen a few examples, but not that one before. Haven't decided how I will do it yet so still open to ideas, but definitely leaning towards something small like that.
  12. Been awhile since I was last on the forum, but I am now doing a uni project on an aquaponics design and I'm really interested in hearing about other people's experiences with it are like. While I know most people run aquaponics in an outdoor setup, I am interested in doing an indoor smaller set-up aimed towards producing/maintaining culinary herbs. I've done a search on the forums, and found maxim_nz's awesome aquaponics pond thread, but are there any others here in NZ that have tried it? Especially keen to know if there are Aucklanders that have done one.
  13. Haha I'm still more of a puppy addict though, only went to fish store cause it's kinda close to the park that Sherlock and I go to. This tank is getting pretty fully. Once I get some cories, it's no more new fish for me since the tank I've been stocking would be fully stocked by then.
  14. Looking good . Heard you were at HFF earlier today (eyeing up potential fish to stock I suppose?) guess Sunday is fish day for both of us now .
  15. The 2 spotted dwarf rasboras have settled in well btw, they're gone really peachy, and swim up the front plenty. They also love the current by the outlet of my HOB filter. Prob get them a few more buddies next time I take Sherlock to Big King, since it's pretty close to HFF.
  16. Really? Which store? If they did/do have them that would be great, just htat when I asked if they had any, I heard that they were "long gone" and since I had a few ppl pm asking if I had any for sale, I was thinking the worse.
  17. Well if you think it would help I'm open to the idea, but I guess I would still prefer to still have some CPDs to oogle at. If you would like the female (since a higher female:male ration seems to work better) I wouldn't mind doing a sex change :sml2: of fishies with you, since males tend to be the pretty looking ones anyway. If you Don't have an available male to swap, then I wouldn't mind just donating her either. There's just one particular male that I'm really attached to (one in my DP) that I'd prefer to keep. He was one of the very first CPDs I bought . Btw I'll be on break after tomorrow, so just PM me details and I'll drop by with Sherlock. I'm only busy Sunday before 5pm, and for couple of hours on Sat, so pretty flexible in terms of time/date.
  18. Haha yea the dither fish won't be fore helping with breeding. Ever since I got the dog I just don't find much time for the fish except topping up evaporated water and feeding. Considering that the 2 tanks they were in had open tops, water actually evaporates pretty quick! So just hoping that dither fish will get them out and about more, and help them come out of their shell a bit. The spotted rasboras I saw in shop looked fully white with black spots tho, do yours look kinda like slightly bigger versions of mosquito rasboras? I read that there are different colour variations depending where they came from, but now I wonder if those in the shop were just pale, I kinda liked them that way  . As for CPD breeding, I might be keen to try breeding them again once I have time, mostly since I think there are quite a few people who would want them, but they're just not available. But considering the work needed to keep water pristine for encouraging spawing, caring for eggs/fry and the lengthy time it takes to grow them to a decent size I don't think I have the time ot commit to that atm. Not when I'd have to clean out the old tanks completely, and refurnish them with fake or snail free plants/moss, and condition my remaining fish ad hope no more die. Considering that the uni scheduled for the next half of semester will probably be very busy, and I'll be overseas for for a chunk of the xmas break, I just don't see a chance to try breeding again anytime soon :dunno:.
  19. 2 males, and one female i think, but even when I only had 2 females and 1 male in 40L mossy tank, I never saw a single egg or fry since that single sucessful breeding attempt last year (or was it year before last? hmm). My CPDs are look skinnier now than they used to be too, compared to when i had a bigger group, plus hiding more too. Might add some other small fish (considering dwarf spotted rasboras) that will hopefully act as dither fish, since the ones i saw in store looked pretty, but also seemed brave.
  20. Just popped into HFF for the 1st time in yonks. I just had 3 CPDs die on me in the last month so I only have 3 left :'(. So now that I have all three survivors consolidated into one tank, I was hoping to grab a couple and top up but no such luck. I heard that HFF hasn't had them in awhile too. I sure hope they make a comeback, they're probably my fav fish of all time and I'd hate to see them gone! Wish you the best getting yours to breed, I'm not sure if it's the snails, but after that one time success, I just stopped seeing eggs. So I wouldn't be surprised if they were at fault. On the other hand I bought a nifty calico long fin BN today . Handsome lil guy. Oh wait it's prob a girl, no bristles.
  21. Sending hugs to the both of you. Know that we are here thinking of you and Bruce. Even though it's incredibly sad what you both have to go through, it's fantastic to see how much you love Bruce, and how you've been there for him through all of this. I'm sure he knows it too. So even if his life is shorter than what you both would have hoped for, seeing how happy he looked in those photos you took, I think he must have had a pretty good life.
  22. Even if you think it's a slim chance that there is hope, then it's worth giving it a go. As you said death is pretty darn final, and as long as he isn't suffering terribly, then I don't see why death can't wait. You should be able to feel sure you are doing the right thing at the right time, and it's not exactly hard (in terms of booking a vet etc.) if you need to change your mind again. If it doesn't feel right, then don't do it, just try and be prepared to do it when it does finally get to the point where it feels like it's time.
  23. People like puppies cause they look cute, but somehow I just like him more as he grow up rather than less. His fur is longer silkier he's a lil bit bigger -more to cuddle - but still has the waddlely puppy-like walk because his long back makes his gait look a bit funny when he walks/runs (dw he doesn't have any back problems). Most of all I notice that he's heaps better at a lot of things that I used to get a little annoyed about. Like toileting when he's let out, walking on a leash, being quiet when told. I also love that he's been so forgiving with all my errors. I mean I had a heck ton of uni projects due lately so many sleepless nights, not that much attention or exercise for him. One day I even came home from uni around 5pm fell straight asleep before doing anything else and didn't wake up till am the next day. I missed my dinner, his dinner, his walk, and he had to hold his pees/poos for 13 hours straight! Not something I intend to do again, and not good owner behavior at all, but I was just so super duper impressed with how well he coped. I'm curious though, for those of you who have/had dogs, did they change very much as they grew up? I always heard that dogs tend to mellow out around 1.5years+ and gets less hyperactive/over-excitable, but any other differences? I mean did you have puppies that weren't that keen on being petted but grew to love it? Or used to love strangers but now couldn't care less about them now? Just interested in hearing about any kind of big, behavioral changes that you didn't actively train for cause I'm always wondering how much or how little mine will change as he grows up.
  24. Haha your boy has some strange tastes for a dog. Reminds me of my cat when she gobbled a chunk of chilli from my sweet chilli tuna. Normally she doesn't even like fish!
