DonnaM
Well first there was that nice lil earthquake that shook us all up... then while we were in a state of civil emergency, some bored teenagers thought it meant civil disobedience and stole my letter box  Then today while we're relaxing in the sun, chicken cooking on the BBQ, watching turtles basking in the pond next to us ... theres a loud pop and the gas bottle and hose catches fire! Ho hum... ran in to get the phone as the flames werent going out.. only to remember the ph was on the table in the BBQ area  . So called 111 and nice big fire truck pulls up outside the gate almost immediately (fire station around the corner) and 2 firemen go down and deal with it all. One fireman burnt a hole right thru his glove and caused a burn on his thumb that looked like a deep cut, as it immediately sealed with the heat of the melted gas bottle tap he was trying to turn off OUCH!! Think I'll go to bed and not get up tomorrow

phoenix44
Sounds like the gas bottle wasn't the only flame that needed putting out  But that is seriously scary. Why did it happen?

DonnaM
Seems there was a leak in the hose just where it connected to the BBQ. But the fire went right down the hose and the top of the gas bottle was on fire as well. So the tap on the gas bottle is now just a thin sharp piece of metal. Thats what the fireman burnt his thumb on. It was a very deep burn! Like one of those nasty cracks some people get on their heels... all seared with the heat so no bleeding or anything... Oh and they did go to fire first ....and then the turtles  It was one of those moments when you go... do we phone 111? Will it go out? Its not getting any bigger? But its still burning? Do we turn off the taps on the BBQ or leave it and get away? ( we kept away from it)... Do I get the turtles out of that pond? ... But the 111 dispatcher said get away so we did. The fire truck was on way back to station when it got the call, so they were extra quick. They did walk thru the front gate, find out what was wrong and then start running down towards the area when I told them it was still on fire...... So be warned... check your gas bottles are ok after a winter of not being used...

DonnaM
The fireman... one who didnt get burnt... reminded us to get the half cooked chicken off the BBQ, (We were all talking turtle at the time), so into the fry pan for last bit of cooking. Still had yummy BBQ flavour. Lovely food and sun and relaxing...with faint smell of something burnt in the distance
