Southerrrngirrl
Southland just experienced a rather large earthquake. I'm located in Otautau, about 40 mins west of Invercargill. My husband is currently in Invercargill and they also felt it. It was so bad I ran to the fish tank and stood there supporting it while water slopped out of it! Southerrrngirrl
Geonet says 6.6 and it was located about 90 km northwest of Tuatapere so thats probably Fiordland. Quite safely say its the biggest I've ever felt. heard reports it was felt in Chch. Already had one aftershock that I know of.

Deno
about that time I noticed the water in my big tank sloshing from end to end, An earthquake did cross my mind though i certainly didn't feel one. Wonder if that's what it was. We are in Wanganui.
firenzenz
Got call from daughter in CHCH. On 8th flr of hotel and "very scary"
Southerrrngirrl
Its possible you felt it in Wanganui.. it was of a sizeable magnitude and only 5 kms deep which is shallow for an earthquake. I believe the shallower they are the more widely felt. Must have been felt a lot because the geonet website is struggling to cope. I'm trying to fill out a Felt Report and its having problems. Says the service is temporarily unavailable. Looks like its gonna be a busy day tomorrow!! I work for Insurance Assessing company.

Kazz
We're in Rotorua and have a wagon wheel with lights suspended from the beams in our lounge. We noticed it was swinging around 9.30 this evening but we didn't feel anything.

Southerrrngirrl
Geonet have upgraded it from 6.6 to 7.8. Thats huge. There was another large aftershock, approximately 20 mins later at 6.1, but it was centred off the coast.. further away so not felt so much. Probably would have created a small tsunami though.. http://www.geonet.org.nz for anyone thats keen on finding out more, or filling out a Felt Report ahh wagonman you beat me to it.. alanmin4304
It might be a good time to contact Billy Connely because the insurance Companies will say they don't need to pay out because it is an act of god so you may need Billy to sue god again. si_sphinx
I had to hold my tank too , water was going everywhere , poor fishes all went into hiding I reckon it lasted for a good 1-2mins down here.
darkfur
news said if you are in the main area you can expect a few more aftershocks so hang onto your fishies (and cockies). Poor animals I bet they are terrified
VinsonMassif
I was in bed and got out in a flash. Was holding the tank with no lids. Water sloshed out anyways. Lasted for a good minute here. Felt like a 5.0 by the time it got here.
VinsonMassif
oh yeah, insurance. Did I mention that after the sloshing, my tank fell over and smashed to pieces  If you are in Wanganui and this did happen then you must have had your tank on a very insecure stand.
