From memory you unscrew one end and then pull the bulb out, don't turning them as it twists the fitting. They are very tight and hard to remove and replace. Good luck.

I know you should have equipment for each tank, but I want to clean some items I have used in a hospital tank. I have some large nets and hoses, etc that I want to sterilize. What do people use to sterilize their nets and other equipment and how do you do it?

The broad leaf plant looks like celery-leaved buttercup (Ranunculus scleratus) which does not creep and is found in wet areas. It is tall growing, has hollow stems and the yellow flowers are smaller than most buttercups.

Did you remember to acclimatise them to the new water temperature, as the water they can out of would have been warm and the hose water would be colder, this can cause them to go into shock, the same as a sudden ph change.

I got mine from Protector Safety and they are worth every dollar. They are cotton lined and a good thickness so as to provide insultation as well as flexiblity when working in cold ponds. They have the elastic tops which do stay up. I wash and dry them before taking them off and then hang them up and they've last over a year so far.

Do you have any airstones bubbling in your tank? Is it heavily planted? If it is bigger fish dying it could be lack of oxygen as plants use oxygen at night taking it away from the fish. Try putting an airstone in the tank for better water circulation. Might work. Good luck, its a pain when things seem right and you can't pinpoint the problem.

would it be simpler if you replaced the 65mm pipe with a 50mm pipe then you can use those fittings.

Payless Plastics has bird netting which is black and doesn't show up as much as the white stuff. If you're buying the netting off a roll by the metre allow extra as when you stretch it out sideways it shrinks up in the length. I bought 5m to cover a 4m pond and when i stretched it over the pond it was to short.

Sorry for your lose. Do you have kingfishers around, as they will fish your pond dry of fish (so to speak). They often try to take fish that are too big for them and end up dropping them. You may have to put bird net over the pond which doesn't show up too much. I used the black fine stuff which looks OK. Good luck.

I have just got Drontal tablets to worm the dog and see that there are different size tablets, one for small dogs to 10 kg with 145mg Pyrantel embonate, 50mg Praziquantel & 150mg Febantel the other for large dogs with a dose of 1 tablet per 20 - 35 kg, with 504mg Pyrantel emb., 175mg Prazi & 875mh Febantel. Could this be the cause of the deaths as using the larger tablets would alter the dose rate quite drastically. Which size tablets are quoted in the recommended dose rates?

Thanks for that. I was looking at some compost worms, on Trademe, which were a mix of red worms and tiger worms and wondered about using them as fish food. I'll search on google and look for a picture of them.

Can anyone tell me which earthworms goldfish eat, as I think someone suggested they don't eat the tiger worms? How can you tell the different worms apart?

You can get the stronger formalin from a chemist, but you have to be careful when handling it. Goodluck

Jude, that appears to be what they are doing around here. Can't think that anyone who would tip them off as to who has aquariums.

We've been here 12 years and the ponds have been in about 10 years and there's been no problem before. i had better keep my fingers crossed that everything is all OK cause there's no way I'm cleaning out the ponds in these b cold temps. Fishboi what did you have to do to your ponds to keep them (MAF) happy?

Today MAF Biosecurity visited and took samples of some plants in my tropical aquarium. I wasn't home but my daughter watched as they took a sample of ambulia and a small stunted grass I had which I thought was a micro sword. They asked about my goldfish ponds in the garden but don't know if they checked them out. They had been canvasing the area, Hamurana (around Rotorua) checking aquariums for illegal plants which had been sold over the internet. I'm interested to see if anyone else has been checked by them? :-?

Thanks Alan, I will keep an eye on how much I am feeding them. I have been careful not to feed the mites to the fish so won't worry in the future.

I keep my whiteworms in a poly box with holes in the top for ventilation, but now there are mites in it. The mites are a reddy brown colour and are on and under the bread I feed to the whiteworms. The white worms look OK but will the mites cause any problem or hurt the fish if I feed any with the worms. Should I be removing the bread when it gets mouldy and doughy? How Often should their compost be changed? :-?
