henward
jsut wondering why would people buy the expensive filter brands. fluval 303 $250 brand new Flucal fx5 $450 brand new tere are parallel imports aqua 1 and bio and jebo on trademe, brand new for literally less than half price. i bought a 1200/lph canister, exacdtly the same as a luval 404 even more for $110 the fittings are generic, nothing fancy, baskets are same. the only thing is that the plastic isnt as shiny and nice. but the motor is the same. why and how can they justify seling expensive ones . filtration and bio logical filtration and waste filtration and the movement of water does not care wether or not your fiter is shiny.... this is something thats been getting to me ! Barrie
What warrentee did you get if you dont mind me asking and is it a reconised agent that you could go back to ?
henward
i get 12 months , same as a fluval when i got it. he has a warehouse and office in takapuna. must admit, it doesnt look as sharp as the expensive ones but its the same stuff. i guess though his brand is easier to disappear if he decides to go , but in the few months hes been importing, hes sold a few hundred already. he sells lights too, reptile bulb 20-25% cheaper. pumps , etc. i figure instead of getting an f5, you can get or 4 of these, ends up cheaper and more filtration and more media. besides, when my fluval impeller broke they charged me 15 or something dollars. its silly. fluval parts are so expensive anyways. the chances of these simple machines breaking with in 12 months is unlikely, just like brand new cars. my faunty bio filter i bought has massive suction! its fantastic. i would recommend it to anyone. A.PROPHECY
the cheaper brands have a rep for breaking down easyer saying that i have 3 cheap jebo cannisters that are all good for smaller volumes of water and i dont have much problems with at all my fx5 has been running sweet aswell tho on my 6foot , my waters not as clear as it should be at times so im thinking of adding a second fx5 . as you said henward you could get 4 of those cheap filters for the price but would you want all those tubes everywer? evil_elmo
i aways say, you get for what you pay for..also a good branded item gets better resale
michael.qian
For most things I buy, I usually try to get the best brands, even if I do have to stretch my budget. When I was buying a canister filter not long ago, I thought I didn't have a choice but to settle with a AquaOne CF1200 for $130, because of limited budget. Then this new Fluval 405 appeared as a $1 reserve auction, got it for $140. Cheaper brands won't be as well built, compare the build quality of an Eheim and a AquaOne, the difference is very obvious. Warren
And my 15 year old Eheim is still running as sweet as the day I got it. Never needed parts and the plastic hasn't yet gone brittle. So far it's cost about $10 a year to own it and getting cheaper every year. Check back in 15 years to see how the cheap one is going (or how many replacements you've had to buy). reef
why and how can they justify seling expensive ones . filtration and bio logical filtration and waste filtration and the movement of water does not care wether or not your fiter is shiny.... this is something thats been getting to me ! Because many hobbyist still appreciate quality. Many of the cheap asian units break down and just are not built that well. I have had many of my eheim pumps for over 10 years vs the cheap units that have stuffed up after a year, for me i just cant be bothered for the little extra. henward
thats a fair enough statement. and i dont actually mind tubes everywhere:D lol but fair enough i see what you mean. the quality is different. but just looking at my fluval compared to my cheaper asian one. The asian one seems as sturdy and robust. but doesnt look as nice. my jebo 1200 i have had for 4 years, no trouble at all. but i guess its a matter of peace of mind and what you prioritise, so one cannot say to another and argue this point,. but thanks for participating i was just curious. the fx5 looks nasty though! it looks like a cryo stasis chamber its awesome! (too much sci fi)
Barrie
I must admit that I have quite a few quite rear Killis and simply would not be prepared to risk loosing a breed by using inferior quality. I would maybe consider it if I was keeping more common fish Im not saying that I wont have problems but I feel better about using proven quality
henward
fair enough i guess when you have lets say tings like red aro, 2k to 4k each then you dont want to take that risk but if you have lets say in a 1000 ltre tank, 4 of the cheaper ones, the chances of 4 failing all together is unlikely i guess but i see what you mean
David R
Something else about parallel imported stuff that no one has touched on yet... Where do you go to buy fish and fish food? Where do you go when you need to ask an experts opinion about something? Where are you going to go when it breaks down and you need parts in a hurry before your water starts going bad because of lack of filtration? You can't parallel import any of that stuff, you need good local shops with knowledgeable staff, quality livestock and a good selection of food, parts and fish. Screw all the people on tardeme who are just doing it to make money, support those who support the hobby!!!
henward
theres a point there but im not patriotic towards that because no matter what, like you said, there is always going to be people going to pet shops and buying from there. but personally, i have had enough experience to buy the cheaper stuff. and i jave a policy of over filtration, so if one goes wrong, theres a back up:D
henward
foot and mouth disease... after saying that cheap ching brands are jsut as good my cheap ones oring decides to not hold water during a power cut i just lost my entire sumps water. 120 litres on the floor:P so i just got myself a FLUVAL FX5... my god! that thing sucks like a...... oki wont go on bt you know what i mean:P massive suction and flowrate! cant risk expensive fish for price of filter i guess 485 for a fx5.. not bad
livingart
485 for a fx5 you could spend that on one fish
henward
i did bought a jardinii for 500 its probably the most expensive fish i have bought so i was abit paranoid over it and make sure i take care of it hence the fluval it was abit expensive but i guess its worth it, its really good
