Ira
You're going to need a much bigger tank than a tiny 30 gallon if you want to keep 5 of them. I'd say a 55 gallon would be the minimum for a pair of them.

Pies
Excellent, there is actually someone who types, spells and proof reads worse then me! There are here in NZ: http://www.brooklands.co.nz/tropical/jurupari.htm 20 Gallons according to above. 50 Gallon is a big breeding tank! I had a pair that would've been 7 or 8 inches long (this was more than 10 years ago) and wouldn't've kept them in anything smaller than a 4ft tank. Five of these in a 20g tank is going to prove tricky, I reckon. A better species would be G. steindachneri (aka G. hondae) if they're still around (I'd love to hear if they are). They're smaller, quieter and mouthbrooders. Nice and easy to breed too. Andrew.
Ira
20G would be a minimum for just one of them. I don't think think my two would be particularly happy in that small even alone. They do get big, mine are around 7". That one in the picture looks very nice, mine look nothing like that, colorwise.

Looks like fright patterning to me. And it's 'colour'... Andrew.

ChrisMack
Looking at the picture, I dont think they have got the right picture (or species, if that a stock fish) Either that or my two guys arent what they are meant to be!!! The body looks a little too slender for the Satanoperca Jurupari (alternative name) that is swimming happily in my tank, and mine definately havent got that beautiful ( and somewhat evil) looking red eye! Or was that just the camera flash! Known names: Satanoperca Jurupari Geophagus Jurupari Demonfish (common name) ChrisMack
Ira
Nope, that's definitely the right fish, other than the colORation which may be due to some fiddling with the photo or some slight subspecies difference.
DaLLiN
My old ones look nothing like it . Most Geophagus are sometimes crossbreed. The actual look is somewhat different, theres no brown its usually grey and theres no yellow on them. anyway im going to try order them from the shop or something. ty all ill soon post the outcome of my quest =P
ChrisMack
hmmm, so if that fish is indeed a Jurupari...then what are the ones I have? You can see a pic of one of them at my (never updated) aquarium site http://www.bizarreaquarium.freeservers.com/index.html Some day I will get back to that site..... Ira
I have seen jurupari described has having faint yellow. That's why I suspect it's a regional/subspecies. Like, you've got a caucasian jurupari and the picture of an asian Jurupari, Chris has an irish jurupari...
ChrisMack
Well then is there any way "to be sure, to be sure"?  You could, be right...many a time I've cought him digging around, wonder if he's tending his crop of spuds! The Irish are a complicated bunch. The Celts came from Germany (sorta), there is a strong Norwegian influence (Vikings down the west coast, ask anyone in Galway, Cork etc) and then there are Anglo-Saxon types from England and those scary protestant folk from Scotland. All good fun, I'm sure... Or not. Didn't see many cichlids when I was there though Had some fun in Belfast, but that had little to do with fish... Andrew.
