if its foam marker you can neutralise it with bleach as both marker and herbicide is acid based and designed to be neutralised with hypochloride (IE common household bleach) or any other strong alkali. Using bleach as a neutraliser does work as spray equipment has to be neutralised to keep the seals, gaskets and washers from rotting. When you have a $10 000 spray unit a set of seals can set you back $1000. Bleach and chlorine can easily be neutralised using UV radiation in under 24 hours.

I chose not to say anything previously as I am not interested in picking fights or playing clique games. Now the emotive personal abuse has ceased, here is my point. A number federation members constantly complain about not being "allowed" any more tanks, many and sometimes the same also complain about being asked to move out or cease having fish because of multiple tanks and/or large tanks. These people also ask for help to move property and have problems finding volunteers. Not everyone appreciates fish and most especially tanks and the resulting predictable damage. Lets face it, tanks damage floors you cannot escape it. All I am saying is be considerate towards others, as other people have to live there too. As for the personal abuse thanks to those who can see beyond their own selfishness. Yes I do have large tanks, I do have permanent carpet damage and will have replace the carpet before we put the house on the market when we sell. We also have to consider secondment and finding homes for large species. They are not easy to home and not everyone has a house that can take the large tanks. It is also extremely unfair and unethical to move a fish the size of a family pooch more than is absolutely necessary.

There are many people out there who have big tanks, there are also many people out there who should not have big tanks. Here are some basic points that people need to consider. Are you responsible for the power bill? Do you own the property? Does anyone else live in the house? Do you intend to move more than once a decade? Are you a child of the household? Do you have a home for your xos fish if you can no longer keep them? It is important to think about other people, big tanks may be pretty but they are space and resource hungry. They can overpower rooms and leave little or no living space. If you dont own the property consider just how much the owner and/or flatmates appreciate your efforts. It is completely unreasonable to expect parents and landlords to risk their house and investment to a large fish tank when they dont want them there. Be considerate. This is a polite way of saying dont get big tanks until you own your own home.

CO2 is a readily available form of carbon, plants expire CO2 and Oxygen. CO2 will also change the hardness and the Ph of the water. However plants are benefited by the nitrification process in the nitrogen cycle and the initial mineralisation in which plants play a major part, along with anaerobic and aerobic bacteria. Good article although you have to think about the multitude of people who think "hey I really need to add CO2" even if their plants are behaving like triffids.

Given half a chance I would do large tanks like they have, there is nothing like placing a 20kg rock in a tank to put things into perspective. Although I do think the way I have the lights set up beats their system hands down.

seasonal water temperature is pretty close to sea water temperature in the Auckland region. Currently its somewhere around 18 degrees in the Hauraki gulf (thats an estimation - if you want the actual temp I will get the gulf current temp tomorrow). Over winter it barely drops below 15 degrees.
