Only if you have bad water quality. good lighting brings out bad water quality
  4. Not too bad to read, do have many adverts. A mag called CORALS does get into more depth and is based on a german mag,

I think you do need lots of current for leathers .

  8. Salifert Stop Parasites is in stock http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/salifert-stop-parasites-vt10067.html
  9. I did for 2 weeks, but i changed the photo so it starts again. it got to number 1. but did not have enough votes to make the top 10. i think you need over 40 votes.
  10. Get some NZ tanks on. http://www.ratemyfishtank.com/
  11. I think it is more to do with the bright light than lack of nutrients
  12. I think you need to do a bit of research before adding Vodka, 100ml is way to much. Why add it to a new tank?? tank should be well established before you add it. Vodka will feed all bactaria including bad bactaria so adding too much could cause problems. If using vodka it is best to start off with 10ml and increase everyday by 1ml. once you start to notice nitrate reducing (about2-3 weeks) start reducing the dose. algae bloom is a classic example of overdosing. Vodka will cause major problems if you overdose , especially mushrooms and leathers .
  13. cookie wrote Those photos are really bad, as that tank is way better. Atleast now i have a excuse to come over and take some real photos.
  14. These pics look a bit better.
  15. Actually i think my tank looked better last year. Maybe it look better because my big leathers last year made my tank more photographic.
  16. They are great meters, got one and is very handy as it has a temp meter also.
  17. good points puttputt. Corals can only use so much carbonate anyway so adding too much is a waste also your tank chemistry gets out of balance.
  18. Maybe a high KH could stress fish or damage the slim coat of the fish. could be part of the whit spot problem. SO why does ph have to be extremely stable?? I still cant see how you can maintain a calcium level of 450ppm with a Kh of 12. maybe that is why your KH is comming down so quick as it is not balanced? I am sure Layton can find a balanced equation to show this.
  19. What is the benefit to maintain kh so high??
  20. I think running kh about 8 is a waste of time. NSW is about 7-8 so why have it much higher. Keep kh too high then it is hard to maintain calcium levels . KH and Calcium will balance each other. In terms of ph I don’t think there is a magic number to achieve, mine ranges from 7.8-8.20.

It is a catch 22, as you might get more nutrients in the wtaer due to die off.

I think you hit the nail on the head, NSW would contain many parasites and bactaria. Many parasites will coexist with fish and only become a problem if fish gets stressed. in other words many factors can contribute to the reduced resistance of fish. Crytocaryon is almost always present in aquarium water. Whitespot usually develops after drastic ,temporary changes in water environment, such as overheating or cooling. typical of summer. Quoted from one of my many diseases books.
