Awesome job Caper

All good advice as usual folks Luckily *knocks on wood* I haven't had the problem with ich in ages. But just to put in my 2 cents worth. I bought the cure for ich that was acutally used specifically for ich. Now I know what you have there is not the exact same product but approximately the same idea as far as treatment goes. I followed the directions exactly as they said and the ich was gone! Good luck and let us know how the fishes made out! Caper

Aren't they beautiful!!! I wonder though, are they considered good algae eaters??? Just did some reading, some sites say good algae eaters, some say not. What are people's experiences with these beautiful fish? $150, darn someone once told me how to convert between Canadian and New Zealand but I forget now. I can go in that store and just look at the fishies for such a long time, such a variety! Caper

Sorry I can't comment on the furan. If you think that the water changes are causing the fish more stress, do you think it is because it is too much a change at one time and what about the water temperature. Perhaps too much, too cold at one time would NOT be a good idea especially where the temp in the tank is so high. So I think, other help please, you'd have to come to some kind of balance between amount and temp in order not to stress the fish. Caper

Gee, sorry about the loss! Are you talking a high school biology teacher? I don't get it, I wouldn't expect someone who teaches biology to necessarily understand about keeping fish. Unless biology teacher's over there have something like that in their lessons?? But then, even more reason to listen to someone who has experience, duh! Caper

Perphaps you should increase water changes to see if that helps. Caper

Everything was fine in the tank until I thought I'd try taking pics with all the lights out. Well, I think I spooked the barbs and tetras. I could hear them "jumping/splashing". Yesterday, I couldn't find one of the albino barbs (I only had 2). When I got home from work yesterday, he/she was dead Is it possible that the fish could have hit the top of the tank and injured himself/herself. I know I will never try to get pics that way again, just by the noise I figured I spooked them. Caper

True Zev :bounce: :bounce: and I LOVE IT! ah, being a part of this website that is 8) Okay, so that could be the trouble then Caryl as a matter of fact I just questioned that after a post you made in the website section. Zev is going to see if she can get them to post for me. I'm really hoping that people can see what I'm up against as far as trying to find a place for my tank and can offer some suggestions...without throwing out furniture   phoenix, that's okay...I WOULD LOVE to visit New Zealand but unfortunately I'd have to win the lottery Why are you putting another 405 on your tank phoenix??? Caper

Yes, I agree Caryl if I'm not seeing or suspecting any problems I don't test. But with Sam doing his "sitting on the bottom" I thought I'd test just to be on the safe side (since I did their's I decided to do all 3). Parameters are fine, whew goldies: ammonia = 0 nitrates = b/w 5 & 10 ppm pH = approximately 7.6 nitrites = not tested, have to get new test kit barbs/tetras: ammonia = 0 nitrates = b/w 10 & 20 ppm pH = approximately 7.6 cory's: ammonia = 0 nitrates = 5 & 10 pH = approximately 7.6 When I state between for the nitrates, if I hold the test tube right on the test card (tube touching the card) it's higher....if I hold it out from the test card a bit, I get the lower reading. The same explaination regarding the pH as well. Sam is till doing the sitting thing but no red marks anywhere :bounce: Caper

please have a look at my first ever tank and please comment

Thanks Caryl, sure made a difference   I'm certainly no good at landscaping. Most of you know I don't keep real plants so that puts some people off right away when they see my tanks. So I say YAH to you for having real plants. But like it has been said, comes down to personal preference. I like your tank and I think the little "gateway" at the rocks is cute. Now please don't be offended though, not fussy for the substrate I can't exactly say what it is that puts me off about it...keep in mind this is coming from a person who STILL has red/white/blue gravel in a tank, UGH what was I thinking! All in all I think you did a great first time set up Caper -
As suggested by Caryl probably not going to bother feeding to the goldies, and since the cory's get shrimp pellets they're not getting either. So I am going to try with my barbs and red eye tetras. I think for the first feeding I'll do as Caryl suggested only a quarter of the cube. I'll feed probably the day before a water change so if there is anything left over I hopefully will get rid of it! So would the mozzie larvae be good for all my fish? Another question :-? , Do I let it completely thaw, keeping in mind I have no idea what any of this stuff looks like thawed :-? . Since I'm going to be feeding it to the barbs/tetras, I have a little measuring cup I thought I would just take out some tank water and let it thaw in that????does that sound ok? Caper

Ah shucks, sorry the loss livingart Caper

Pics a little too small  can't really see! Caper -
I know this is an old post but trying to catch up on the ones I missed! Curious livingart, did the fish survive? Caper
-
adodge, just to verify you mean a total black out correct, which means covering the tank and keeping ALL light away??? Caper
-
Well, it is a well known fact that some people are allergic to nuts. Oh I'm sorry this was about fish...yuck! Caper
-
Yes Alan I think the smaller packet did say baby brine shrimp where this doesn't say either. Does it make a difference as far as feeding goes? You can tell I need a life when I'm excited that I can get frozen food for my fish   What do you think about the mosquito larvae? Caper
-
Thanks Caryl and yeh_buddy Caryl, I was wondering if that was what caused the red spots which I'm guessing were like a scrape. Plus Sam is the blind fish so maybe the blindess after all these years is making him depressed :-? Yeh_buddy I have to admit that when everything is fine in my tanks I don't test as often. Usually if something is "not right" the first thing I do is test. But I got such a fright when I saw the red I just immediately did the water change. But now I must do water test for a few days just to see how things are. Thanks again, Caper

Aaron when you think that the temp is getting too high you can always blow a fan across the top of your tank if you have one available. Bags of ice cubes can sometimes help. Keep your lights off as well. cichlid7, since aaron brought up the topic, rather than start a new thread...at what point do you have to try and cool a tank down??? Oh, another suggesion Aaron you could come over here...we have had some really cold weather last week, with the windchill it was -27 C...BRRRRRRRRRR. Remember we are having winter here Caper

Hi & welcome! cichlid7...you forgot to mention that MTS is incurable  Keep us updated on what fishies you finally decide on. Take care & have fun, Caper

Thank you all alan wrote: Ah, what does nuplii mean  On the package they are just called "Frozen Premium Dried Shrimp". They did have smaller packets that he said you would just break a piece off and I thought they had baby brine shrimp on the packet but I could be wrong. Zev wrote: What is the reasoning behind that Zev? I guess my goal here is to try and give a variety of food to my fishies so they are not always getting dried flakes. So, I'm not as concerned about the goldies since they do get there vegies  Caryl do you think that gives them enough variety flakes and peas??? I don't know if feeding the frozen shrimp would be of any benefit to the cory's since they are getting the shrimp pellets anyway, what do you think? The store also had other frozen foods that I see folks here use bloodworms, but I don't think they are a good idea for my fish??? beefheart which I known my fish don't need, right? but they do have frozen mosquito larvae, what are you opinions on the mozzie larvae (mozzies are mosquitos right  ) Caper
