  7. One of my main concerns with fish keeping (not knowing much about ALOT of other things involved) was how do I know how much to feed them. Well, that fear is over. First, (because I read it in a book I think) I used to feed the fish whatever they could eat within 5 minutes and no feeding on Sundays, yep used to time it! Then it was 2 feedings a day (except on Sundays) what they could eat in 2 minutes, yep timed that too! NOW, the get fed once a day (mostly every second day) for about 2 minutes (just count in my head). Keep up with my water changes, and everything seems to be fine. I was a tad nervous at first to reduce to every second day. But the fish don't seem to be suffering any ill effects so I'm hoping this indicates they are getting enough! Caper

I could still kiss my son Ryan for buying me the first one for Christmas a couple of years ago :bounce: :bounce: They attach directly to the tap. Unfortunately I have to use my kitchen sink. But it gets a good dose of bleach and a good scrubbing afterwards. My 10 gallon upstairs I just use vac and bucket. I try to do weekly changes but for different reasons have gone beyond that but mostly done weekly. I take out the water, put dechlorinator in, and then the fresh water gets added. As I said previously, for the aquavacs I keep an eye on the thermometer and touch the tap to see that what's going in isn't too hot or too cold. When adding back into my 10 gallon, just add some hot water till the cold chill is gone. During the weekly water changes I do a "light" vacuuming around, meaning I don't move things (or try not to knock them down  ). The monthly cleaning is reserved for a really good vacuuming/cleaning. Caper

  13. So Caryl overfeeding could cause the film as well then?? Caper
  14. True Stella, could have just been coincidence. But, hearing the splashing/jumping it would not surprise me if the poor fish injured himself/herself. Darn, Jude I forgot to tell them to say cheese maybe that was it!  I'll keep trying to get decent pics, as was said before by someone that's one of the good things about digital, just keep taking them. OH, OH, OH, I know instead of saying cheese maybe I'll just tell them to STOP and pose pretty for the camera, think that will work!!! Caper
  15. My tanks aren't presently in that situation since it is still winter here. But I have seen threads regarding the increase in tank temps due to summer conditions. Now, I already asked the question but I think it was missed and I can't find the thread now so I just want some clarification. When do you have to worry that the tank is getting to warm for the fish? At what point should you have to consider bringing the temp down? Do you understand what I'm asking  Say you have tropical fish that can live in a temp range of 74 to 85, but you keep the temp in the tank at 74 what temp over that should you be concerned and start to cool the tank. Caper
  16. Stella wrote: Having a bit of trouble trying to figure out what you're saying Stella, now there's a surprise  . First please explain exactly what you mean when you say bioload? Just as an example, say you have a "small" tank and only 4 fish in it but you have 2 "large" filters running. Does it mean that the 4 fish wouln't produce enough waste to seed both filters?????? That there would NOT be enough waste to have good bacteria in both filters? Heck, sorry not explaining very good  Caper
  17. I don't know about methayline blue. Not able to get it here, well unless the new pet store has it. Check with you pet store. I thought, but could be completely wrong, that what you folks have for ich there is called Wonder Tonic, I repeat could be wrong on the name. I went to see if I had an old bottle of what I used but I guess I threw it out long ago. The treatment I had didn't require an increase in temp so I never did do that. All I can remember is retreating again AFTER there were no visible signs on the fish, like was mentioned previously. All I can recall from the directions on what I used was 25% water change to start; remove carbon; treat for X number of days; water change which includes vacuuming the substrate and start the treatment over again. 18. So not the truth comes out Caryl, you really will be smuggling Bud on your trip with you...won't you 8) Caper
  19.   You folks are hilarious    Thanks for getting my pics to post! OK, but the goal here is NOT throw out any furniture  I would get rid of the entertainment unit but then where would I put my village at Christmas time...I know throw it out    Hmmm, I'm going to have to do some measuring here *me thinks*! I wonder if I could fit 2 tanks in the corner, you know where you said Caryl put the other tank by the chair. Keep those ideas coming folks...think I see light at the end of the tunnel...ah, fish tank :-? 8) In case your wondering what the big white spot it on the blue wall! The painters put the wrong paint and the blue peeled right off! Ah, with help of the cat and me trying to put an end to it!!! Caper

  22. Thanks whetu, imagine calling me a murderer...    Did I tell you about the time I held the ex's head underwater...no, I didn't...just kidding folks No, I meant the noise the fish were making, I wasn't making noise 8) I had turned all the lights off in the livingroom and in the tanks, I thought I read that somewhere that would help getting good pics. But obviously it freaked out the barbs and tetras! Maybe the flash Caryl, I'm not sure since I don't really know how to work my camera and was trying all different settings :-? 8) but I had to stop I knew by the noise THEY were making that someting was upsetting them. The funny thing is whetu that when I turn the lights off in their tank at night, it's almost as if I had a magnet turn on at the top and they all come up, funny looking actually! Oh and no more deaths so Caryl I think it may have hurt itself which led to his/her demise Caper
  23. Sorry about your fish. Sounds like things are on the upside of good now, I hope. Perphaps it was as you said a combination of factors. I have never used flourish (no real plants) and never used furan. But I agree with Caryl, and have read many times that you must not mix meds/chemicals so just keep that in mind for future reference. Keep us updated! Caper
  24. I had this happen first on one tank then in another. The first time I noticed it the tank was upstairs in my apartment so not near the kitchen. Thinking back I did have plug in air fresheners, but not alot so really don't think that was the issue. Anyway, tried the paper towel thing and it didn't really work. So I added an airstone, problem gone! I presently have an airstone in all 3 tanks so don't know if it would reappear if I turned them off or not. But even when it was there didn't seem to cause any harm to the fish or the water parameters. Caper
