  1. Do you have anything (even a bucket) that you can keep the filter going in ? or you will quickly lose your bacteria
  2. Any of the zoos that keep reptiles would also be in a good position to advise :-) Good luck, hope the burn is not so deep it causes anything serious.
  3. I think you should take it to the vet ! Just because it is a reptile does not mean you should not seek veterinary advice - or at least phone them to see what they say ?? Im sure he would have cost you as much as some pedigree cats or dogs, and you would be taking them to the vets if they got burned wouldnt you ?
  4. LOL Ryan - whilst I would love to, I neither have the resources, time or inclination to go that far.
  5. that sounds like a text book reply rather than one that is necessarily correct to be honest, but after last night my brain does not want to function today so im not gonna argue, lol.
  6. And yet I was in my local LFS yesterday picking up my new tank and saw the sheets and sheets and sheets of glass he has there and i said "that will last you a while then", to which he replied "i re-order that amount every couple of weeks" - so people are buying tanks for sure . . .
  7. But retailers can help to create markets. I know that import costs and MAF fees etc are very expensive for importers here, but it strikes me that the biggest mark up is between the importer and the retailer (and when the retailer is ALSO the importer, there is even less of an excuse for this). If certain fish were available at lower cost there would be higher demand because more people could afford the fish they desire. If the price is right there will be greater demand on the retailer by the consumer; in turn the retailer will be asking the importer to bring in higher numbers and the cost of import will benefit from economies of scale and be cheaper - importers should then be more willing to import and the availability and diversity of fish should improve, along with lower prices ..... (in an ideal world, lol)
  8. I know its not local to you, but they do ship- contact Bob at Redwood Aquatics here in CHCH - he has larger ones for sale that will do multiple tanks. You will save marginally on power consumption, only use one socket, and probably wont cost you a lot more than buying 5 separate air pumps.

    VECTON UV

Hi I used to run a Vecton UV on my marine tank several years ago - just wondering if anyone with a greater undertanding of what they do (kill micro organisms is all i know) can tell me if there is a benefit running one on a freshwater tank (african cichlids to be precise) cheers
  13. What are the blue fish with yellow finnage ? ..
  14. do you get NZ cucumbers or telegraph ones ? I think the skin is a lot tougher on the NZ ones, though it may not make a difference.
  15. Just read it - pity cos the setup looked great and damn shame about the fish. Glad the dems pulled through on the whole.
  16. OK, these are NOT mine, they are off the net, but since you are looking for ideas, I like the look pics removed
  17. thats sad news - why did they have that effect ?
  18. Tropheus full stop for me, hehe. Every time I see a new type I want them, and am loving surfing that Tropheus site I found last week The first pics of the Ikola here are fantastic pics too. Great examples of the fish too - which makes a difference. Good to see them alongside J. Marlieri - another of my favourites.
  19. What type of ANGLES ? 90degree ? 180degree ? Hehe - just kiddin' I know you mean ANGELS But seriously, what type ? Me, I like the pearlscales Setup's lookin good so far.
  20. Fair enough - that sounds like nothing much to worry about. I have actually wondered about using hammered up marine rock as a filter media actually.
  21. How have you found the rock MarkLB ? I have read that african cichlids are used to smooth rocks with an algal coating and marine rock can be quite sharp sometimes. No issues with damaged mouths or bodies ?
  22. marklb - ahh, i know it as live rock - yes i can see how that would work well - tank looks great.
  23. what do u mean by coral rock ? what substrate have u got ?
  24. Exactly - and of course there are idiots out there but they are in a very small minority I imagine, and its not appropriate to take the extremity that R669 seems to be wanting to take, just because of a small minority, and penalise the vast majority.
