Hey all, I'm in Palmy and usually catch rainwater for my tank, but am a bit low (ie NONE) at the moment as my water catcher bucket fell over while I was away. I used to use the water provided at wet pets, but travelling over to that side of town regularly is too much of a hassle. I know there are the tap water treaters, but just wanted an opinion on which was the best to use, like Aqua Plus or another brand? Good ole dodgy Palmy water... Thanks!

You know what would be amusing... if it sells for some ridiculous price, then just gradually changes to a full colour frog as it matures. Like a goldfish I once chose because it had a cool black stripe from its nose, across its back down to its tail. Damn thing just lost it and turned into an ordinary orange comet

Hmmm, haven't heard that take on the white bengals. As far as I know, it is just a recessive colour gene and nothing more. They were found in the wild too, but like many recessive genes, there weren't many and thanks to poaching, they were wiped out. Docos are always interesting for stuff like that though. What also bugs me is there are so many people working to expand the tigers gene pool in captivity, yet there are thousands in 'private' collections in the states... well lots of things bug me, but that falls into the current topic :-? (my platties still alive? lol)

*shudder* ligers and tigons are so wrong, just people messing around with nature. These animals have short lives, usually with health problems and are often sterile. Shouldn't be encouraged in my opinion.

Zev, so he came from Hastings? When I was looking at breeders, I could only find one in Hastings (well, one registered one anyway) and when I rang her at the end of 2004 she was only just planning her first litter. Was Rickys breeder registered? Lol at 'Bagpipes' I'll have to remember to use that one. But I love my whingy snob, and as Caryl said, you just described the average cat Hey Whiskas, I love the name Griffyn for ginger cats...it just suits doesnt it

yeah your right, a purebred is no guarantee of anything He was just what I happened to want as he was to be my first cat, and yeah, maybe hes not what I expected, but I still love him. Dunno if I'd get another purebred, but thats really because there are so many rescues out there and I'd love to handraise kittens again some day as the rewards were just fantastic. Bring on a dog too I say Not until I have my own home though *sigh* Sticking to the cats and fish (bubbas!) until then

*snort* yeah...supposed to be  Hes floppy...and big....and coloured right. But the personality? HAH. He doesn't purr, unless hes begging for food, and doesn't smooch unless your holding the food container. He HATES his belly, feet and esp tail being touched and doesn't like cuddles, apart from the occasional stroke under the chin. But during the colder months, if you sit down for a night of tv...he does crawl on your lap, which is lovely. And despite his apparent hatred of people, he has to follow you everywhere, just don't touch him Oh, and you'd think he was stupid...until he managed to open the lid off the tupperware container that houses the bikkies Jinx is much cleverer though, she can open doors from the outside via pushing, or from the inside. This is coz our bedroom door in the flat is missing a handle *shakes fist at lazy landlord* and has some carpet stapled to the back for a scratch area. She jumps up, hangs off the carpet, then pushes the door frame to make the door swing inwards Scuse me, I'm rambling

 Wayne? Gary? You guys crack me up Some beautiful cats here might I add. Haha Zev, you think Ricky is unsociable? You havent met my Merlin ;-) Hes a ragdoll too. Any chance Ricky came from Taranaki? they may be related  Heres Merlin, my Ragdoll: Hes a pedigree snob and he knows it This is Jinx, my SPCA special that I handraised from 4 days old with her sister. Her sis was pure white and went to a new home in Napier: I hope the photos arent too big! And just want to share this shot coz I think its cool Managed to capture this while photographing them outside:

Sorry, just read the last page as its been so hot here in Hastings for the last 2 days. Does this mean the fan I have currently blowing over my 35 litre tank is not doing anything? Came home yesterday and the temp was 29, dropped to 26 overnight and is still at 26 now (i took the light and glass lids off and replaced them with netting and have pointed a big fan at it) 30 degrees outside in the shade now *sweats*

Not to mention his favourite fish, his blue platties I have a 4 1/2 year old and a 7 year old neice, so I know what kids are like with showing off things  Seems hes got the bug early hehe

Is he not in Napier? Mum works at Medlab in Hastings , so they'll end up there rather than the courier depot. Couriers go to and from her work all day, and I expect they'll be there in the morning. Don't know if I want you asking your hubby to go this far out of his way though   Thanks for the kind thought though!

I have a wee dilemma with my fishies. I have bought a pair of killies off Aquanut and he posted them this afternoon, and they should be arriving tomorrow morning. However, the problem is they are addressed to my Mums work, as we live rurally and the courier out to here isn't always as reliable. Thing is, the plan was that Dad could pick them up from Mums work...but thats fallen through now as he has headed off overseas for work (originally hoped to get them posted before then) I am car-less can't go in to pick them up unless I bike. If they don't get picked up, it means they stay in their transport bag until 6:30 when my Mum finishes work. Which is the lessor of two evils here? Leaving them for more hours in the bag until 6:30-7 o'clock or picking them up and biking with them?

lmao that reminds me. We (my parents, and me in the uni holidays) live on an orchard, and the house is 300m off the road. Well one day an old bathtub appeared in the middle of our drive entrance. Rather random, but got moved to the side so we could get into the drive. Then just as suddenly, the thing disappeared a month or so later. Some strange people out there. Someone obviously though "haha, I'll dump it here and avoid dump fees" while the next bugger thought "haha, I'm gonna steal this! suckers..."

No chance of waiting until Uni is started again? Won't be back until the 21st at the earliest, more likely a few days later...but I might join to come to future meetings 8) Good luck -
I just *have* to comment lol (been lurking and appreciating all the fantastic tanks btw!) I can see how the conversation will go: Evilknieval: Can you buy me some Vodka Dad? Dad: Why do you want vodka? Evilknieval: Its for my marine fish Dad: Yeah....right....you gotta try harder than that son

thats YOUR tank? One word....awesome! And your taking it all down? How could you? Although I have to admit if you put the same effort into your planted tank I will be first in line to admire
-
I also love this website: http://www.ratemyfishtank.com/topten.php/s_9 Those are the top 10 planted tanks, but there are other top 10 photos on there, like marine and fish photos

lol, I'll pass on the maths and say fill it up with 137 litres, then add litre by litre until you know how much it holds

Yay you made your way over here! Haven't checked the trademe thread yet...just about to watch your video. As to fish going spastic when you first add them, my danios went NUTS when I put them in my tank. They settled down in a day or so. Was like they were on crack lol. Awesome that you got a golden bristlenose too, they are gorgeous See ya back on tardme -
Which fertilizer, if any, should I use? and ph worries...
Rozski replied to Rozski's topic in Beginners Corner
Hey thanks for the help. Will give the Ph a few tests throughout the day and see how it is. I did test it just after I did a water change with rainwater so that might have lowered it a bit. Also remembered I could chuck a little bird grit (right?) into the filter to buffer the Ph and raise it a little. Plenty of fish in there lol, so if their wastes are feeding the plants then I won't worry about fertilising. Was just wondering if I needed to due to using rainwater. And I don't have any algae problems at the moment so yay. Heh, my male gourami is hogging all the food again. Maybe I should tell him hes getting a pot belly... -

Bumping... anyone? -
Hey, I only have a small tropical tank (34 litre) but plenty of live plants. In Palmerston I use rain water for my changes as we are on icky town water. Should I be using fertilizer to give my plants some extra nutrients? I have java ferns which are flourishing (babies and all) as well as a java moss wall which is starting to grow through its mesh nicely. My anbulia/cabomba (could never figure out which it was lol) was growing well then packed a sad when i chopped it back a bit and replanted it (most of it refused to put down roots). Also just picked up some indian fern. Also, when I'm home during the christmas hols I bring my tank with me, hence the small size. I can't wait to set up a HUGE planted tank one day. We are on bore water there, which is high in calcium and probably iron too with a high pH. So I use a combo of rainwater and tap water to get a nice balanced pH lol. The rainwater here is dropping my pH to quite low, test says about 6. Should I be worried about that? Seeing as its constant and all... Fish are bristlenoses, platies, danios and dwarf gourami. Thanks, Rozski

oops! Thanks for the reminder. Never gave it a thought...
