  1. Hey, can you share the location and/or name of that Mongolian restaurant?? I've been to one in Hamilton and it was fantastic. Didn't know there was one in the bay Did you have good weather? Palmerston is grotty, wish I was at home...
  2. I know they aren't pearls, but my zebra danios I can tell apart. My male is always slim, while my females get quite fat bellies with eggs. Don't know if pearls have something similar, but male zebras have a more goldy background (ie behind the stripes) colour while the females are more silver. I have 2 females and a male and the male will pair off with a female and they will 'dance' in a circle. You'll know you have different sexes when you start getting bazillions of fry too

    Bad dad

    ignore me... it was late
  4. *pictures keri sitting with her cellphone trying to get a photo of tiny fishies* Congratulations btw!!
  5. Lol I've already perused Billarnys gallery Have decided I'm going to break in and take his golden gouramis and that beautiful red siamese fighter And then claim all his awesome spawning photos as my own haha
  6. Noticed there wasnt a photo thread for Gouramis! Plus I got 2 good photos of my new dwarf boy today and wanted to share
  7. The Animates here in Palmerston Nth also has cichlids (and plecos i think) in with their large turtles. Never really thought about it before :-?
  8. You could take the best of both worlds and give your tank a damned good clean and then seed it with gravel/filter/something else from someone elses established tank? Just an idea, although someone else might come in and say its a bad idea lol, I'm only a newbie

    My Hallway Tank

Nice photos and fish! Why can't I take photos like that lol Do you have a whole tank photo?
  11. You sleep in a submarine?? heh I've bought the Aqua Clear HOB off trademe, waiting for the sellers email so I can pay 8) Also got a 34 litre tank today from Animates and have transferred my fish over They must be very confused (I put everything back how it was in the bigger tank) and thinking "hmmm, this looks identical to where we were taken out of but theres something different...I can't quite put my fin on it..."
  12. Heh you've convinced me then Now I can raise my danio fry in the 22 litre instead of letting them be snack food for their parents haha

    Is this true?

Heh a yes a no and a yes. It seems that when maintained right they are fine. Dad wants me to put one in the 30L tank I want to get, but you need a thick layer of substrate and it'll take up an unproportional amount of tank. I'm still tossing up between UG and hang on haha. Stupid pros and cons... *mumbles*
  14. :-? I read far too much and came across this: http://www.bestfish.com/ug.html
  15. Wow, going into town was the stupidest thing ever  They have some lovely dwarf gouramis in there, and of course that means a bigger tank. Theres the same as mine there, but a size up, 30L I think. (It has to stay small enough to be shiftable for when I go home once a year) and THEN dad rings me and explains the wonderfullness of undergravel filters, which I should apparently get if I go up to a 30L tank. Cept I have no idea about which air pump to get haha. *watches the happy fishes swimming around in her tank* Heres a pic:
  16. Hmmm still thinking about which way to go  Its like I have MTS but as I can't get any more tanks want to keep improving the one I have haha Still wondering about the filter noise. Water noise will be fine, my tank is full also. My air pump that I plugged in in the store and sounded 'virtually silent' was noisy as when I got it home. Is there a hang on Eheim small enough? I didn't think there was. There are the nice small in tank Eheim filters that I gave the link for but am wondering if its much different to what I have already. Going to cruise into town now and have a squiz at the filters there heh. Sorry for all the annoying questions, its nice having as many opinions as possible
  17. Well the Aqua Clear says ok for 18 litres and above, but does 378 litres per hour, thats almost 20 times my tank volume *watches fishes swim crazily against current before being sucked up filter arm*
  18. Or... http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pets-animals/Fish/Pumps-filters/photos/a-63376654/p-21749354.htm Oh the choices! I *know* eheim is a good brand. I have an Elite Ray filter in there at the moment and I read overfiltration with small tanks is better than underfiltration... Spose there isnt much difference between filters in small tanks...they all suck water through a sponge *shrugs*
  19. Like this one? : http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pets-animals/Fish/Pumps-filters/auction-62761101.htm Have been eyeing it up for a while, but as I can't hear it run have been holding back. And I can't exactly go into my lfs, get them to pull it out, plug it in, have me go "yeah, thats good" then waltz out to buy it $30 cheaper on trademe My tank is SILENT due to the internal filter at the moment. Had an airstone when I had goldfish, but found the air pump noisy (was a $15 jebo heh) :-?
  20. Hi, am just considering getting a small hang on filter for my wee 22 litre tropical tank. I have an internal filter at the moment, but the fact a hang on is not inside the tank is appealing due to the limited space in a smaller tank, plus the more effective filtration (I assume) What I'm wondering is, how much noise do these things make? I realise there will be some trickle noise from the water, but also how much sound does the motor make? Its because its on my desk right next to my bed and I know I can't exactly turn it off every night And any brand recommendations if you know whether they are quiet or not would be greatly appreciated
  21. lol I don't really *want* babies either, it was just cool to see, and at least I know they arent stressed out to the max from the tank cycling if they're happy to spawn I'm not running round with buckets trying to save them all or anything ;-) Rather amusing to see an adventurous fry go up and stick itself to the side of the tank and then 3 seconds later papa goes by and gobbles bubs up It is like a love fest in the tank every morning when I turn the light on though haha
  22. Not exciting at all for all you old hands but I just started up a little (22L)tropical tank a few weeks ago and have 3 longfin zebra danios zipping around there happily. Well, got back from being away for 5 days tonight, fish still alive after being in my Mums care (all good). Just went back into the lounge to peek at my fish as there was algae floating around the tank earlier due to me cleaning it off the heater (will be water changing tomorrow, the filters already sucked it all up) and theres teeny little fry scooting around in there!! Oh the excitedness! LOL yes I realise my danios will probably eat them as soon as they see them, but I got to see them first! *bounces off to bed*
  23. Yeah I'm tossing up between a lot of options lol. Will see how much room I have in the car tomorrow ;-) Also don't want a crudload of algae in my tank when I get back. Plus I'm impatient and want to have fun planting etc NOW hehehe
  24. Meh, might still take it home anyway and 'feed' it with fish food to release ammonia and get and keep the cycle going. Was going on info from this site: http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm
  25. Caper - Am pretty sure, they match the descriptions I read online. Any other ideas on what it could be then?? Caryl - Was planning on adding some Cycle product and maybe some tankwater from an established tank. Or if you have a better plan please feel free to share it
