 I outbid you on that cheap DIY CO2 unit this morning. Planning to upgrade to a bigger tank and thought "hey, that looks cheap, plus I love the planted tanks and CO2 seems to do such wonders..." Hence me now cruising the technical forums for CO2 hints and advice lol Sorry, I hope you can find another one (or do the coke bottle thing)

Dwarf gourami Good mid to top tank fish, and amusing when they squirt for food
-
I think the answer might be zero But I'll let the more educated on here give you appropriate sizes for discus
-
mmmm....guess I might be waiting then.... Definitely getting a bigger tank one day, this was just going to be for the meantime
-
Yeah, second hand can be so much cheaper, but nothing good ever seems to come up in the Manawatu (seriously, check the local manawatu listings on trademe) haven't seen anything good local whenever I've checked Plus it must get cheaper per litre setting up a larger tank vs a smaller tank I'm sure. You get more value for money spending on a large than a small. Can't quite go that big yet though and wow cichlid, wicked deal And yeah, I realise its not exactly the bargain of the year (that award went to my $1 washing machine haha) but for that size tank, with a stand and new, I can't find much beter :-? Watch me seesaw between "I wanna go for it" and "lets wait for a few years" .... and yup Wilson, those are the ones. Tell me something useful so I can make a decision either way please!

plus stand though? My wee tank here has already cost me upwards of $200 when you factor $50 for the tank, $60 for the light, $40 for the heater, $45 for the filter... I got the filter off trademe, but the light and tank I know could have come cheaper. Also got a good heater, hence the cost.

No wonder my danio fry survived lol, I threw them in a tank i had left for a few weeks to turn green and then forgot about them for a while Didn't have this set up in time though, although the water is turning green on its own already I think. I will chuck some java moss in there too. Heres the pair: And the grumpy father himself who is well on his way to exterminating the rest of his tank mates. Lord only knows where my killies are hiding... Scuse the grubby glass, my kitten keeps nosing it trying to get to the fish
-
of the microscopic fish? Well I can try lol.... Edited to say, nah, its hopeless, far too tiny and I can't find the macro feature on my bfs camera.
-
Well after wondering where all my fry had gone and thinking they'd all disintegrated, I looked at the far corner of the tank and theres about 40 of them now free swimming and hanging out in just that corner (maybe its where all the cool kids are these days?) Hehe, I am too excited about these guys, its sad. Must be severely lacking in fun mental stimulation thanks to exams

I am sorely sorely tempted. The pet store here has had a deal running on a 65L Aqua One tank for the last few weeks, and it goes until the end of the month. For $235 you get a 65L tank (one of those ones with plastic silver corners and black back), a stand, a light (that clips on the top) a 100W Aqua one heater, a budget Aqua One HOB filter, some random tropical chemicals (Didn't look too close, maybe chlorine remover?) and a crappy ornament. Just checking, is that a good deal? I mainly like the nice shiny new tank and the fact it has a stand with it! plus I like those lights that clip on the tanks. I currently have a 35litre tropical tank, small size mainly due to the fact I have to be able to bring it home in the uni holidays (also whats holding me back getting this one...) So do I get it and deal with the consequences in the holidays (either bringing it home, or selling the fish for my last year of uni (very busy) and starting it up again after uni) or...or..... *head explodes* Yeah, I wish I was just a simple impulse buyer sometimes  Opinions anyone? much appreciated... :-?

Thanks for the suggestions Alan Have done as you advised Have just cleaned out my tank, stuck a heater in and a thermometer on it (had to get another thermometer as the stick on one on the side is too high up when theres on 8cm of water in the tank lol) and transferred the fry over. Scooped them into a container, managed to get 85% odd. Then siphoned water into 2nd tank, managed to siphon up most of the fry left behind. Then chucked those waiting in the container into the tank with their associated weedy bits, and stuck a lid and gladwrap on. Nice and steamy in there Also bought some JBL Novil fluid to feed them with. I know BBS are the gold standard, but I've never raised them before and don't quite have the time right now :-? Lots in there! Fingers crossed some make it Now I just really hope my male gourami calms down a bit before he kills my other tank members. Even the danios aren't their happy selves anymore
-
Coolies thanks for that. Will be scooping them all carefully, with their weed into an icecream container, then siphoning tank water to my spare. Then depositing fry in the spare. I have chucked danio fry when they were no more than eyes with a tail into a green water tank and they made it, but hey, danios are impossible to kill lol Theres at least 100 fry there, hopefully odds are at least one survives Will give an update at some stage. Depends if I can get into town and get some fry food too...

ok, so everyone is looking but no-one can answer my questions?
-
Oh, and the reason I haven't prepared more for this is its the middle of my exams and I am kinda preoccupied lol. Didn't think they'd get it on so quick either!

OK, so I got a male gourami last Friday as a mate for my female, and he tried on the first day to make a bubble nest and kind of failed. Well he has been making another one for the last two days at the front of the tank. He was being extra grumpy (seeing as I have not seen any other tank occupants for two days! they are all hiding at the back) and I took a closer look today and his little bundle of weed (severe lack of bubbles) is full of little fry. I assume if I leave them in there he will eventully stop playing Dad and they will get eaten? I do have a spare 22 litre tank though, it is empty at the moment. I can clean it and stick a heater in it though. Will all the fry die if I transfer them over? Spose not much to lose, but any suggestions are welcome :-) Oh, and if I take them out, effectively destroying his nest, will he become more amicable to the other tank members? Thanks! PS. Yay for bubbas!

OK, this is not for me, there is someone on the trademe forums that is desperate to help their big goldfish. He has gone nose-to-bottom, is gulping more than usual and is bobbing tail up, not interested in food (even bloodworms). The other two fish in the tank seem fine. The person has checked the scales, and they aren't sticking out, so probably more likely to be a swim bladder problem than dropsy. They really want to save this fish and aren't sure what to do. Can anyone help? PS. I directed them here, but when they tried to register they mucked up the code box thingy, so got blocked out from registering, hence me starting the thread

Yeah, I had always thought TB, but A) woulda thought it would have killed him much faster and B) it usually causes a hunchback type of curvature to the spine, not a sideways bending and even C) if he suddenly got it, where did it come from? He was the last fish intro'd and had had him for a good few months before it showed up. Not sure how long they can carry before displaying disease, anyone know? Haven't tested my water recently, but was regularly testing it last year. Will be doing it when I get a moment, just had a looooong day
-
Thanks Sharn, yeah the guy at the LFS said twistyness is usually genetic, but yeah, this was an adult that was perfectly fine before And no-one else? Man, if I can't get help here I'm stuffed

Pretty much describes what I have! At Christmas, my male dwarf gourami became S shaped. Like, looking at him from above, he looked like an S. Apart from spending more time hanging out in his plant, he still ate and remained alive. When I went away for easter (friend fed fish during the break for me) I decided to put him out of his misery, as he obviously wasnt going to get better and had just started looking much more sick, floating crooked etc. I hadn't added anything to my tank since maybe October at the latest, and that was a plant. He was the last fish added, and that was in August. Was late December when we noticed him getting bendy. Theres also a female dwarf gourami, a pair of killies (which got added in mid Jan), two small bristlenose and two zebra danios (I had three, but lost one in March, she got a hump back and died, but it may have been old age? I have had them almost a year and they were big when I got them) Thought all my other fish were healthy, and they act it, but looking closely at my killies, they are getting a slight double bend now too. No-one else would see it, but coz my gourami was like this, and I've been looking closely, I can see. Only thing I could see at the time when I did some googling was the possibility of fish TB.... but he lasted for aaaages with it if he did have it Do I need to wipe my tank out and start fresh or what? Hard to treat for something when I don't know what it is Would also rather not lose my killies. Also want to get another male dwarf, but thinking this isnt a good idea if I think theres a disease in my tank Any suggestions? I am at a loss as to what to do
-
Thanks for all the help and info! Will be keeping it all in mind. My female is in a tank with bristlenose, danios and a pair of young killies, so have to keep my other fish in mind in regards to raising temp etc. Already have green water in the spare tank next to it haha. Not intentionally either But thanks, and will def let you know if they ever breed (or even get as far as a bubble nest)
-
I thought so Was just people always saying they couldn't tell whether they had a female or not that confused me. Mine is so obviously female...
-
Thread has just been started  Oh, and my killies are doing well too! The male has grown heaps and is colouring up nicely too You breeding pretty blue platties yet? haha
-
Hey all, I have a female dwarf gourami, and until recently also had a male. Just the standard boy, red with blue stripes, but had to put him out of his misery 2 weeks ago, as he'd been sickly since christmas and obviously wasn't going to recover. My female is very plain silver/grey, so obviously a girl. Which is why I can't understand why people have trouble telling the difference between the sexes... My boy chased my girl around every now and then, but never even attempted a bubble nest (I think he was gay ). What I would like to know is, do you need two dwarf gourami of the same colour to breed? Like is she possibly a female sunsett dwarf and needs a male of the same? Any thoughts appreciated
-
lol, yeah its honesty in the part that you don't drive in, fill up your container and drive away Didn't know they had an RO unit though, just thought filters, which is what that is anyway I suppose. Their waters pH is quite high though I want to get out to wet pets again, haven't been in a while. Need me a new male dwarf gourami. My boy became S shaped at Christmas and never straightened out again, was very strange, he wouldn't die, but looked more sickly than usual just before Easter so I knocked him off. My female is scooting around looking fat. My boy never bubble nested either, I have suspiscious of him being gay That reminds me, need to start a thread on that...

Yeah I think it is Chlorine here, as its tap water. Not sure what else is in it. Like I said, the town water here is pretty gross in general. We are lucky enough to be on bore water at home in Hawkes Bay Meant to chuck a bucket of water outside last night, will go do so now and see if I can dig out my old airstone to put in it too. And hey African They don't officially charge, theres a tap outside and they ask that you pay them a dollar for a fillup (like 20 litres I guess). If no-one paid they'd stop offering I guess, its just an honesty thing. And if you had lots of tanks, the transport would be a lot of hassle! I hate to think of the litres you go through for a water change Thanks for the help, spose I better get off my butt and fill up a bucket for tomorrow
