  1. cheers. Thanks for that Snowman. Next time I am doing the food shopping I will see if I can find one. I think they are seasonal veges but I know that cuecumbers are available
  2. so when I get the fish I should get the Pleco Chips also? How much do they cost roughly as I know at the fish shop that I am going to the BN's are $15 and would like to know what to expect for total finances lol. We don't ever buy thoes vegetables so will the BN be ok with out them?
  3. one more thing. Do I need to get extra food for this fish or will it be ok eating the algae, left overs from the guppies and the wood??
  4. awesome pics Snowman. I have got two ornaments that are hollowed out with plenty of space inside. One is a fake rock formation with a large cave hole inside and the other is an old wrecked boat which has holes in the side which is totaly hallow inside also. But I shall get this driftwood sorted and soak it in a bucket. One more question if possible. Should I have the wood in the tank before I get the BN or can it last a few days with out it? I was looking at going tomorrow to get one but I know the driftwood wont' be ready in time.
  5. awesome guys. thanks a heap. I am now off to full the bucket. I ain't to sure when I will get the bristle nose yet. cheers
  6. Can these two be in the same tank together with out fighting or damaging each others fins?? I hear that they are really good for eating algae in the tank and would like to get one. Also do these fish require bog wood in the tank? I don't want to crowd the bottom of the tank with to much stuff but would a piece of drift wood be any good? If so how do I go about preparing it for the tank or can I just add it?? One thing I have been told is to put the wood into a bucket of water for a week or so to let all the colour and stuff leach out of it? Should I do this to the drift wood?
  7. I am new to this whole tank business but I have only had my guppies for just over a week and already two of them have had babies. I have managed to catch 10-12 babies so far and know that there could be up to 6 more swimming about the bottom of the tank. I don't know anything about Convicts but guessed it was also pure dumb luck . Congratulations anyway.
  8. what is good algae and what isn't. I have noticed when I look through my tank with the light from the other side there is this clearish furry looking stuff on the plants. I haven't seen it on the ornaments yet. My guppies are often picking stuff off the plants but now what ever it is has growen heaps. I did a water change on friday just gone and will do another one this comming friday. Fish seem to be fine and all and still having babies. Is there any algae eater that would eat this stuff and is suitable with guppies?? Cheers

    Hi everyone

Hi there Blitz. I am also new at this. My tank isn't as big as yours and currently got 6 guppies (2M-4F) and about 8-12 babies I have found these forums to be very handy and useful in information and ideas for all sorts of fish and tanks. Hope your tank goes well
  10. I was just curious as to how soon can guppy colours come through. I have noticed that a couple of the babies are very dark in colour in the lower half of their bodies like the Black Tux that I currently have now. If they are to all have the same colour as these how can I get different colours into my tank?? Would I have to look into buying a trio of a different colour or can I just get away with getting females of a different colour strain??
  11. Well I am finaly back on my own computer. WOOO HOOO. Hopefully I can catch some of yous in the mIRC chat room. I will try and find the info for what server and room name and all that. Hope to meet yous there tonight maybe. I have taken some pics of my fish and all but they came out very blury and the fish just look like blobs of muck! lol so I shall try again and get one posted up

    Bent Spine?

I have a male that sounds very similar to that. Hes always swimming about and eating with the others but is often found resting at the top of the tank. I thought it was because his tail might be to heavy for him but thats just how it looks. I don't know if there is any health issues invovled with this but hope that nothing is seriously wrong with them.
  13. I was wondering the same thing. I am from invercargill and wouldn't mind meeting others or just knowing that there are others close by to exchange knowledge and advice with and maybe the odd get together
  14. I would just like to ask or find out who lives in the same town as me or close by. I am in invercargill and know that Maxy is in Gore. Are there any others about that live in southland
  15. LOL the reason for why I choose friday is because my eldest is at kindy and my youngest will sleep for longer which gives me about an hour of total peace and quiet lol other wise it will be on the weekend where the whole house will be in my way lol
  16. Hmmmm I wonder how albino guppies would go with Black Tux guppies I have currently saved 4 babies from my first drop of fry. I can't wait to see what sort of colours they will have. If they are the same as the rest that are in there (all black tux) then I will look at getting a trio of different coloured ones. I have now come to the conclusion that black and white ain't always the most interesting coloured fish. Although my big male guppy looks absolutly brilliant when the light is on and he is swimming about. His tail will shimmer with deep blue and green, almost like a peacock tail feathers. While the whiter area shimers with a lovely metallic silver/blue with a strip of orange above the eye. Very pretty boy.
  17. yeah sorry if I didn't make that understandable. The fizz stick thingy is pluged into the air pump and creates a wall of bubbles. Sorry about that The filter I got is one that came with the tank. Fully submerged in the tank sitting just above the grave (as per instructions) its a Aqua One Tornado PF-603 the info is as follows (from side of box) Model No - PF-603 Voltage - 220~240V Frequency - 50Hz L.P.H - 600L/HR Vattage - 8W I don't know if thats any help but yes I do have a filter. Its a long narrow box shaped thing that sits just above the gravel in the tank. It sucks in throw the little vents around the edges in the lower half of the casing. The top 1/3 of the box is where the water pumps out again. My husband extended the pipe that came out of there so it is being pumped out the opposite end from the filter. This allows the water being blowen out to move the dirty water over to the filter. There is a pressure valve so far along the pipe that you can addjust for how fast the water is flowing as I didn't want it TOO fast or it will end up making the fish tired and getting sucked up against the filter. Hope this all helps. As soon as the network (computer network) is set up again I will upload an image of my tank and point out what is what and where. Then you will see how I have things set up Thanks for all the info tho. Its been a real good help.
  18. well when I first set up this tank to do a fishless cycle I did a pH test straight away and it was between 7.0 - 7.5 which from what I have read is ok for guppies. The temp is always at 24-25C. I have 4 different live plants in there to give some variety but nothing flash. I haven't done any water changes yet which is why I was asking in the first place as there is (what I class) as a fair bit of poop on the gravel and I wanted to see how long I can go with out up setting the fish to do a water change. I have noticed that since I turned the bubbles off (airpump with a fizz stick thingy) the fish seem a lot more relaxed so I am going to leave it off and it seems to make it easier for the baby fry to get the food at the top of the water with out creating to much current for them. Basicly every thing looks fine, fish, plants and water. I just wanted to know to help keep optimal conditions for the fish when to do a water change Thanks for your comments. I will see how it is on the weekend (1 week after adding 6 guppies) If all is still ok then I will try going for another week to let the bacteria build up then do a 20% water change. Cheers guys
  19. Hi there everyone. I would like to know... how soon after adding your fish (tropical guppies) do you need to do a 20% water change?? I was going to look into doing it every friday (I got the fish on a friday) with a gravel vac so then it would be done each week but I don't know if that would be to often or not. Also with taking water out, what sort of water do I put back in? I fulled my tank up with water from the tap and naturaly the pH was fine. I have also been told to full a bucket of water and let that sit for a couple of nights to "age" and use that to add to the tank. Does the water need to be some what heated before its added or do I just add the water and let the heater warm it up? Found heaps of things on the net about how important water changes are but they don't tell me how often or how to replace the water lol. Thanks for your time
  20. my tank is 60cm long x 50cm high x 30cm deep. I have been told that it holds 90 ltrs = 23 US gallons. I know I could probably have more than 20 guppies in my tank but I didn't want to go overboard either lol. The 4 that I have now I will look after untill they are about 6 weeks old. If they are big enough by then I will remove the breeding net. I just hope that they ain't all males or I can see my females going absolutly mental! lol so hopefully out of the 4 I got (also noticed that there are another 2 in the tank) I will have either a good mix or all females I shall keep you posted
  21. thanks for the info Shae. I had a look at the breeder boxes and all they had at the shop were Betta boxes so I kinda didn't have a choice but to get the breeder net. I have noticed that another guppies vent at the back is really big so I guess that she is also due to drop with in the next 24 hrs. I noticed this with my bigger female last night and when I woke up they were there lol. Seems as I only have guppies in my tank I can't see the breeder net being a major problem. I also doubt that the pet shop will take back any babies either so I can only keep a very small amount. I won't be collecting babies from every fish that drops fry but now and then I will grab the odd couple and play the waiting game of finding out what colour and sex it will be Once again thanks for the info. Now to go and look up fry development so I can find out how long it will be till they can swim with the big ones
  22. yeah I know what you mean. When I was watching this morning there was about 10-15 babies flying about but by the time I droped my eldest off to kindy and got to the pet store there was only 4 left so I grabed them and put them in the breeder net. Since then I have discovered that there is another baby or two swimming about the tank so we will see how they survive Now that I got babies I can't help but sit and look for a good half hour at a time.
  23. wow caryl thanks for that. I shall keep it in mind but umm this is going to sound blonde. You lost me after the wrapping the wool about a book! lol But its all good I went out and got a breeding net (not the hard plastic ones) and caught 4 babies. If any more survive then they are little fighters but I will only keep these 4 for now. I have noticed that they squeeze up behind the filter (between filter and glass) and none of the other fish can get at them there. I am more worried of them dying from not eating anything so I got some special baby food (my lord that cost a bundle) so I will feed the ones that I caught this and basicly let the others fend for themselves. I know it sounds nasty but you can't catch them all lol I would also like to know how old do the babies need to be roughly to be big enough to be let go in the tank? and when will their colours start to show and the sex? Cheers a heap. This is sooooooo exciting
  24. Woke up this morning to see little baby fry swimming about my tank and as I watched I saw the mummy fishy give birth I was like but as I started counting I noticed that the number was getting less and less. I don't know how many are going to survive. None of the fish have been following her. Everynow and then one of the other fish will swim past and the fry will skurry about and they will go after them. Most times tho the little fighters manage to get away but I don't know for how long. I hope to keep at least a couple as I have got a 90ltr tank which I feel should be able to hold almost 20 guppies. I wanted to go and get a breeding net thingy but have no idea how much they cost as I spent my extra bit of money yesterday buying paint for the baby cot Now I wish I hadn't
  25. hey there guys. Sorry for not being about over the last couple of days but having some real internet issues. I would like to ask if when the female is ready to drop her fry will it be all the fish that follow her about or just the males? I was guessing that the males are trying to get a little frisky with her. I would also like to know, how do I know when she has had babies? If none survive (if it happened during the night) are there any signes that she is no longer due/pregnant? I don't have much in the way of plants but is there any chance that maybe the odd couple will survive? and if any babies are about in the tank what do I look for?? would they sit at the top or would they hang about the bottom of the tank by the plants? Sorry for all the quesitons yet again but I am almost more excited about the birth of these babies than I am my own
