  1. Did a couple adjustments to your pic I'm guessing you are going for a syphon sort of thing. The "T" in the red circle is to let air in and to break the syphon effect, if you don't break the syphon, it will just be a syphone as opposed to an over flow. You just have to prime the bit between the tank and the "T" bend. Hope I make sense The light blue line is where the water level will be. If the water goes over this line it will just go out the over flow
  2. I'm building a new pond for my turtles (yeah, in the middle of winter) and was thinking of planting Vallisneria in there. I know turtles will probably eat them but will that affect them in a negative way???? Hope to plant more than they can eat if possible
  3. I live in Maungaraki(Western hills of Lower Hutt), I've chucked tap water straight into the tanks for years and no problems. I drink straight from the tap and feel no ill effects. I do know our tap water taste very different from the tap at work in Wellington, much nicer from home.
  4. I have daphnia, but I'm in Wellington. The little guys grow/reproduce at what looks like 1/4 the rate of summer. Gave them some green water but after a week still green, guess they're gone into a less active, less hungry state
  5. Not sure how big/little angles are at 2 weeks but you could try daphnia. They can live in fresh water, if the fish do not eat the adults then they will produce little daphnia to keep the fish fed.
  6. Here's some fuzzy pics of some of my fish. Gold/blonde/false albino/snow/Dimsum Special (you can pretty much call them whatever you want to) Grays with yellow tails

    Black light

Maybe cause I watch too much CSI but would it not also illuminate certain proteins produced by your tankmates during all sorts of activities?
  8. Black coral is protected, MAF will confiscate ANY fragments you have dead or alive. The stuff takes forever to grow and lives in very cold and dark waters. <---- Proof I did earn my degree, hehehe
  9. What temperature do you have the tank at?
  10. Have a baby red eared and baby snake neck destroy a 5cm bristle nose the other day, they had lived with it since hatching. Guess they got curious. But a second larger bristlenose is ok. Size probably matters, rule of the wild don't try to eat something that is bigger than you.
  11. First is to get the fish in breeding condition, usually involves seperating the sexes and feeding them high quality food. Then placing the breeding fish together in a tank with water conditions that meet the fish's breeding needs. Some fish breed in community tanks others just add to the food chain of a community tank so it can pay to seperate the breeding fish. Sorry for not being specific but you have named fish with a variety of breeding methods. For this reason I think you should start with one fish then move on to the next as breeding fish can take up a lot of tank space. leapord danios - egg scatterers angelfish - Parent will lay eggs on a flat surface and are supposed to care for them but in some cases the will eat the eggs so you might want to seperate the parents from the eggs mollies - Livebearers platies - Livebreaers black widows - (I assume tetras) egg scatterers
  12. The HMS Wellington was recently sunk off the south coast if you are qualified to wreck dive.
  13. It appears more a genetic problem in my tanks, I've only had to cull a few fish this year. No massive die off or anything(touch bog-wood) so I suspect that a male swimming around my tanks is a carrier. The fish culled are in my random colour tank, my attempts to line breed seem fine.
  14. All the guppies I have seen with bent spines or developed bent spines are females. Anyone have it happen to male fish?
  15. I think breeding has something to do with light because mine are outside in a heated tank that is kept at a constant temperature all year.
  16. When: mine breed during the spring and start laying eggs about Nov-Dec. Where: there is a sand pit by the tank that they live in How: ... Well, when a mommy turtle and a daddy turtle really love eachother they....you get the rest, but they lay eggs.
  17. What if you have your water cooling system in the computer, but stick the cooling radiator in the tank and running a flow of water through it. So fish tank gunk stays in the fish tank and your computer cooling system stays isolated. You have any way to regulate the heat? My computer can get up to 35 degrees(according to the readout on the front panel, thats with the second fan on full and someone playing games)

    Tadpoles

Hutt pet has them every now and then. If you want to catch them I heard that there are some ponds on the eastern hills with them, but the hike is too much for my curiosity. My friend has a pond on their farm with them, but he's in Horokiwi and the frogs there are not cute little whistling tree frogs, I think they are bell frogs coz they get quite big and noisy in the summer.
  19. Getting better at taking pics of my fish Got to the point where i was about to start shouting at them to stay still, face the right way, and smile Do you guys spend half an hour just to get 1 good pic?
  20. Never said I was a photographer, and compared to the other pics I got thats is a work of art What makes you think 1 isn't a virgin Shae? Heres a link. Its just a fuzzy pic of females. They are mostly grey with yellow and black on their tails. http://www.geocities.com/alive_58/females.JPG
  21. how about these girls about 3ish cm PM me if you want to arrange something
  22. How many are you after? Any particular strain? I have a a couple adult virgin females, not of any strain, but ready to breed. Some blonde females but are probably a month or two away from breedable size.
  23. I think you are refering to black lights, they look purple but don't really emit light. But when they shine on certain colours they glow. Like the lights used to find invisible security inks.
  24. I have a tank of sword tails but the sex ratio is 1 male to the whole tank of females. Its been like this for quite a while now. It seems every drop are all females too. I heard that these fish can change gender, any idea on how to get more males?
