  5. The filter wool should be on the INFLOW side of the filter media. Reason It catches the bigger particulates before they get down into the other media, and blocks them. Alan 104

    silly queston?

See my post above. I can't be much clearer. SIC - LID Generally no they can't. But there are some that can be kept in a com. tank. There are ones that come from hi pH levels and others from Low pH levels Of course this is where your ??? come in, and also doing research on the fish that your thinkng about making a home for. Alan 104
  12. Check this link for #2 http://www.fishbase.org/Photos/Thumbnai ... hp?ID=6704 I think this is Haplachromis burtoni Alan 104
  13. Pretty sure the first one is Melanotaenia lacustrus Alan 104
  14. Do ya cup-fulls and keep your tests going. If it gets too high, remove some until you are buffering ok to what you want. I lke putting it in pantyhose sausages over the U/G filters. Easy to remove if it's climbing too high. Alan 104
  15. Get a bubble box filter and fill it with chicken grit. A piece of filter floss over the top to catch the solids in the water. Over time this not only acting as a filter for you, but will help raise the pH. Also, see if you can get som lmestone chip to add to your gravel. Alan 104
  16. If they are coldwater ones. Freeze a milk-bottle of water and wrap it in newspaper, and have that in the chilly bin with them. Don't know about hitching posts for them tho. I just had some seaweed in with them, so guess that coud be said that I did. Alan 104
  17. I have an old kitchen sink unit for a 1350 x 450 x 450 tank Yo don't need to fill in where the sink or basin is But watch that there is no little upturn on the edges to stop water overflow, of the vanity. By the way, the CLEAT goes under the other top. Re-read my other post Alan 104
  18. Didn't you take wood-work at school?? A cleat is a narrow piece of wood, prolly about 25mm to 50mm wide, 25mm thick, and approx 400mm long, not "L" shaped, rectangular. and running under, and hard up against the underside of the shelf. PVC glue, and screw, this to the walls of the table, and the glued to the underside of the table-top. It will then make a better support for the ends of the table-top. Also make sure to add more nails to the back cover of the unit. This (the backing)acts as a brace for the unit. You'll need extra fastenings on the whole perimeter of the backing, as well as the walls that go thru from front to back. Failure to do this, could result in the whole thing collapsing in a sideways, diagonal movement. Alan 104
  19. Glue and screw a cleat under the shelf at each end. These joints are only end-glued and dowelled, and are too weak for what you want to do, unless the cleats suggested are added. Alan 104
  20. He would only be reporting them Caper, after finding out about them on this site and realizing that they are a hazard Alan 104
  21. With that kind of mix I wouldn't use it. But the article did go on to say that it has very good corrosion resistance in a marine situation. Try it in a small tank with sacrificial fish. Alan 104
  22. Why not get in touch with MAF and tell them of your problem. I'm sure they'd be only to pleased to help or at least tell you how to fix the problem. There is such a thing as an electric fish stunner that they use. Excellent contraption. The other way that springs to mind is to lime it. Not the citrus type tho. Ask the MAFia about the amount to use. That works really well. I heard of a Koi pond in the Tauranga area that was discovered, and the fish were annihilated with the lime. Alan 104
  23. If the pond is an outdoors one, Oscars will hack it over summer in Auck no sweat. I saw a homemade pond down Parapram, outside, that had heaps of baby oscars in it Pond was made from concrete blocks, and lined with a piece of black polythene May have to give them and umbrella to keep dry out of the rain tho, if the friend's place iss situated in Auck. Alan 104
  24. Stuttered   Al
