    Albino Guppies

You must have a waterproof lid pawz for the water in the top pic not to go all over the floor. Alan 104
  2. Alan

Have to try the pic again there Krissie Alan 104
  3. You are quite correct there B&K, it is very handy for the other NZ members to know one anothers location. Don't need your street address but you general location would be nice. Thanks Benlee in anticipation. Just needs a little addition to your profile. Alan 104
  4. Benlee, just checking thru your past posts trying to pinpoint where you are and came across this query. You have been here now over two half years. If ya let the forum know where you are by changing your profile, I may be able to help. Alan 104
  5. Keep clicking that cam. Those are embryo snails showing in the bottom pic, be kewl to see the countdown to the hatching and how long they take. Alan 104
  6. Kewl Krissie, no penalty shoot out. I got my information from a fishtank maker from Levin years ago. He was a valued member of the FNZAS, now deceased, but his explaination was that of experience with fish dying in tanks made from Neautral Cure but not of Acetic Cure. All the top tank makers that I know of use the acetic cure also. It could be that the silicone that killed the fish had anti mould in it as well. Alan 104
  7. Krisse that is completely WRONG Edit your post now please The NEUTRAL is NOT used for fish tanks. Alan 104

Thanks for that info Peter. Good to see you back on the board again. 5 months by my calculations. Alan 104
  10. Some real good peat for the aquarist is found at the garden centre and comes as Jiffy peat discs. Make sure that there is no additives. Yes Caryl I do use Hauraki peat too, and when Rose isn't looking, put it thru the kitchen wizz to break up the big bits. There is a few stones in it tho that make an awful noise, and it is a bit messy to clean it up before she realizes what I'm up to. Alan 104
  11. I'd love to see those so called "coldwater" guppies now. Should be a lot of replacements needed, or maybe some pee'd off aquarist getting ready to spit the dummy. Alan 104 ps I have unheated tanks in my garage and in one of them is a sword. Must check the temp and see what it is surviving in. Al
  12. Think about it then. Where do they come from? What is the temperatures that they have to endure to lead a happy, reproductive life? It gets so cold in the winter that they hibernate. Mine are at the moment. I don't see a heap of heaterstats in their pools or streams for them. Now what is your answer? The ones that push the heater idea is the LFS, another sale. The UV lighting takes the place of the sunlight that they'd get in nature. Alan 104
  13. If the tank is inside, don't waste your time with a heater. I have my turtles outside all the year round. Including this coldest June for 34 years. Alan 104

Good one Paul. Keep it up. Alan 104
  15. Well thankyou kindly sir. If you are the Brad that Justin was refering to when he PM'd me, then I just may be eyeballing you and him over a quite XXXX (can't spell beer) before too long. Alan 104
  16. Ummmmmm ! ! ! I did suggest to use an airline tube to syphon out the babies. Then the net could have been used for the parents. But then we all learn from our experiences, both good and bad. Hope the parents recover okay, and good luck with the babies. By the way, BBS is the best go for the babies, and remember, don't feed UNTIL the babies are free swimming and put some snails into their tank to act as scavengers, as left over food can be, and is fatal to babies. Silicone

Jude, it should have Acetic Cure on it somewhere, that is the smell like strong vinegar. It may have Neautral Cure, this is bad, bad. If it has got that. DON'T USE IT Alan 104
  18. Yeah Caryl, I think the rice fish or Medaka would be one of the rarest ones IF they are still in NZ. They are legal to keep, breed, sell, swap, give away, but illegal to import them, same as white cloud mountain minnows and about the same conditions too. If you or anyone else locates some I'd be VERY interested, as would some other killie keepers that I know. Alan 104
  19. I use the volcanic "stuff" from Lake Rotoma. No ill effects that I can see. Not yet any way. Alan 104

    NZKA Newsletter

Congratulations go to our new Editor, Tim Nuthall, NZKA 265, aka Aquanut, for the newsletter. Boy it's been a long time between drinks, but you've done a good job. Look forward to next months. Alan 104
  21. If you are wishing to preserve the bacteria in your filter, make sure that you wash it with tank water, NOT house water. If you are really worried about the heat loss, boil up the jug just b4 the power goes off and fill all available thermos flasks and then add this to the tank as required. Maybe better to put it into floating bottles as heat exchanges tho. You could also increase your tank temperature a little b4 power outage, but definately cover as caryl sugggests. Have you got a gas operated camping stove or similar? You could heat up water as required using this method too. Years ago when tanks had slate bases and no heaterstats, the tanks were heated using a small flame underneath. I wouldn't suggest doing this to a glass bottom, but a large outage a tile slate could be placed between the tank and the flame. Bit impracticable if the tank is on a full stand covering the base tho. Alan 104
  22. Tim, you forgot "THEM" Be interesting if they colour up as a male and a female. If it is a male, you may be able to breed with it as you have lost you proper male, the one bodied one. Alan 104
  23. and you can always take out a window and use a hyab to ease it thru. Alan 104
