  1. Nice simple answer but the guess was wrong I'm sorry. Silicone is no good on plastic plumbing. What you should get is a solvent glue especially for the purpose. Any plumbing shop will have it. What it does is melts the plastic surface of the pipes and with a quick twist and a push the seal is made. It is actually melted together and imo. impossible to get off again. So measure twice, cut once, do a dummy dry run, then glue. DON'T leave the solvent where kids can get it and seal the tin after use. Alan 104

I just got a PM from him C. I did not notice that he was from Hiksville as well. I'll get in touch with him, or continue at least with the PM's, and see if I can help locally. Now maybe the posters can see the value of putting where your locale is. Alan 104
  6. Did you clean out the filter with tank water before the power started again?? If not, then when the water flow started again thru the filter, the tank was prolly poisoned. Recommend water changes to continue, and don't add any more fish for the moment. Alan 104

  11. Saxsena, welcome aboard. Do you think that you could alter your profile to say where you are from?? If it's Auck area, be a little more specific please. You'll find later that it will save unneccessary questions from others later on. Thanks Alan 104

    I was so lucky

They're cold water fish, hence the reason that they are not allowed to be imported. Bath was outside behind the garage and a 11 year old visitor was looking at them without supervision. Alan 104

    I was so lucky

Congratulations on your persistence at their revival. Can I suggest, as these are fairly valuable fish, that if you have the room to split them up? I had Medaka once, 100's of them all in the one bath and the plug was pulled accidentally, lost the lot, and they were prolly the rarest fish in NZ as they are not allowed to be imported. If I had of had one pair, we prolly would still have them in NZ. Alan 104
  15. I don't know about Wright's postal service as I've never used it. Nothing like going and seeing the real thing tho. I have done two trips there and plan another this year. Follow out the Glenbrooke Rd to their establishment and you will not be disappointed, correct time of the year of course. Take a lunch and a drink, and good walking shoes, as it's not just a small outfit, more like a waterfarm. We got a Lotus last time there and it only cost $28. It was so big that it had to be put into a rubbish bag and the leaves still came out of the top, it was so heavy, it had to be wheeled in a wheel-barrow to the car, and to get it into the boot, lying down, some of the leaves and stems had to be bent over. If you are able to, I'd thoroughly recommend to go, view, note the ones you like and how they are growing, then purchase. Then sit down in their cafe over looking the ponds and admire. From my experience, you won't be disappointed. Alan 104
  16. I have been told that the BEST way to get the size etc onto guppies that as babies, when you pass left to right of them, you feed them, and when you pass right to left you water change them. Heaps of food and heaps of water changes. Alan 104
  17. Make sure that any patch repair is done on the water side. Might be harder, but it won't leak. Well, it shouldn't. With a bit of care. I could fix it but the distance I'm away would wipe that out. Alan 104

    pond filtration

I think the code when I did it was 600mm deep 150 mm above cable a warning plastic strip, then 150 above that I had concrete pieces. The plastic and concrete may have been reversed. mmmm!! Might be overkill, but when you are in a position that you may sell or die and the next owners have no idea what is below the surface. Better to be safe than sorry. Hate to meet a person in the after-life and have them go crook at me forever for not warning correctly of the buried cable. Alan 104

    Hey from England

Barclaya longifolia is available here. I got some at the Pupuke LFS and also got some for EJ. His was growing well when I last saw it, but he has CO2 and hi lighting. Mine is just in one of my tanks. Must go and check it to make sure I still have it tho. Alan 104

    Killies breeding???

Gotcha now Alan. Yep and I find that if you can get a lit background, that you can pick out the changing colours of the anal and dorsal fin early in the piece of the males. Alan 104

    Hey from England

Welcome aboard Kris. Of course I have to ask you what species of killie do you have  And what is the full name of the microctenapoma. I have an adult pair of the spotted ctenapoma. Enjoy your stay here at the "Shakey Isles" site. Alan 104

    Killies breeding???

The Nothos do need a dry period. I know of no instances where they have water hatched, not for me any way. Caserole use to dry his for 2 mths before rewetting. I've not heard of killies changing sex once coloured up, although there is a species that is hatched all one sex and needs a hormone given of from urinating female mammals that pee in the fish's water. NZKA #1 has a face slapping experience about that species. I prefer to spawn the fish in a BBT with a pot like Wok describes, Caserole does the same but has gravel on the bottom to capture eggs laid out of the pot. The base can have spagnum moss over it as a base for them to spawn in as well. This really doesn't make sense, not to me anyway. Or if after reading it again, is it that you have two males AND some (??) females? Where did you obtain them from and what ratio are they: males to females?? Then further down you say that you have three males and eight females?? How long have you had the for and could you post a pic of them please. Just want to confirm if they are the species you are referring to. What were the species of eggs that you obtained. If I know that I can possibly help you. And the answer is yes, you can hatch them after a long storage, numbers may be down tho dependant on the species. If the medium has dried out completely over that time, I doubt if you will have success with any hatching tho. Did the previous owner leave a note with the eggs, it should have the date stored, the date expected to rewet, and most important, the specie of fish. Hope this helps, and answers to the above will clear up the ambiguity of the posts, well, to me anyway. Alan 104
  25. That's a good batch. They tend to have less than guppy and swords. Alan 104
