I think the ones without ref. to the Axelrod are the ones that are not in the book. Like the newer varieties. There's only one that gives that system of ID'ing too isn't there??
-
I can't see how they can be imported into NZ with MAF requiring the Sci. name as part of their ID of the fish coming in.

Interesting site for info and pics. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/c ... utinta.php

Welcome to the site mcarver, good to see that you still have your eye 'in' for decent fish. I'm very much in agreeance(spp) of the condition of some of the fish displayed. Bent spines and skelatal fish should never be displayed for sale or even as feeders. Look forward to more posts. Have PM'd you.

Hey thanks guys. Chazza404 Got tied of explaining what happened so I printed ot a copy of the post I did to start this thread. Easier than explaining all the time. At least the story stays the same. Stu Rose says that there is a bed here Stu if you haven't already got one. shelzie First night home and had an almost uninterupted 10 hour sleep. Nothing like ya own bed. Feeling heaps better, with no pain and only hurts if the scalp is touched. The paper clips come off the nose today, so I'll get my Gretian looks back again, and not have children running away from me. Loking forward to doing the tank repair too. Once again thanks.

The eggs were gone when I got home an hour ago. Oh well. Next time. Yes, I will work a little more carefully, and I'll have to finish fixing that tank tomorrow. Thanks for the well wishes and the growls.

My Panduros spawn again BUT or should it read You stupid b------ It was about 9.30pm( EDIT - Rose tells me it was 8.30pm) on Wednesday evening the 14 of March and I went out to the fishroom in the garage to turn of the lights. As usual, I checked over the tanks of fish and one of the first I checked were my Apistograma panduro, yes!! They had laid more eggs and I was on the verge of saying goodnight and then I thought, hold on, there’s a spare tank beside them, same water, just need a box filter and a heater to bring the temperature up to 28oC, same as the parents tank. The heater was easy, and as it was doing its job, I located a box filter and took it inside to clean it up. This was done and I was having a problem to get it to sit on the bottom without flicking over. To gain access to the tank that was 1.8 m off the floor I had two choices. Go to the other room and find a double step stool standing at 450mm high or use a single step stool, 325mm high and put on top of that a plastic stand at 210mm high. I opted for the twin setup as it gave me just a bit more height, as the top of the tank was 2100mm from the floor. I finally got the filter to sit right on the bottom and was thinking of putting in another bucket of fresh water to go with the two already in the aquarium. When all of a sudden, I found myself on the floor as the plastic stand had slid off the wooden one. That wouldn’t have been so bad, but at the time of that slipping I had my hand inside the tank, which of course, without my knowledge followed me down. It hit on the left side of my head ripping open a 75mm tear and stunned me momentarily, all I can say is I staggered inside and called out to Rose for help, on seeing me she almost fainted as my face was covered with blood, slowly making a pool bigger at my feet. I have a heart condition that requires medication of warfarin, which of course makes the blood thin and difficult to clot. She guided me inside with a towel wrapped around my head, and the towel was slowly changing red, she made me comfortable in the computer room and left me with instructions to hold the towel and not move. As I was doing this I heard her making a 111 call to summons an ambulance. Now for her to do this I realized that I was possibly worse than I thought I was. In due course the ambulance arrived, the crew stabilized me as much as possible then it was off to the A&E of the local hospital. Here I was stripped of my soaking clothes and dressed in those terrible no backed gowns and then they started the assessment of the damage. It was beyond their aid, other than cleaning up to see what could be seen and I was allocated a doctor and an intern and after multiple injections of a mind numbing substance, they stapled it together. Sharn and Mystic would be proud of me. I now have 14 added extras. A deep puncture wound on my right forearm was treated using supa glu or at least its medical, and where my nose was also opened up, luckily not loosing the tip of it, was repaired using little paper strips, I look absolutely ridiculous now, and the final injury was when I belted my calf muscle onto the bottom stool causing a huge bruise which almost put me into a wheelchair. We got home from the hospital at 1.30am and with the painkillers had a reasonable nights sleep. Today I’m feeling like a massive hangover, and I have the remains of the tank ready to be stripped down and repaired. I was lucky. I had a woman to care for me, and if the tank hadn’t of come down nice and square as it had, and got me with a corner in the temple, I doubt I’d be here writing out a report of how careless I was and the consequences, the weight of the tank plus 20 litres of water and what could have happened, kept Rose awake most of the night just thinking of it. But to top it off, after checking just now, 2.30pm Thurs. the spawn is still intact, the most distance a spawning has got, so maybe it was all worthwhile. NOT

At this time of year when the ambient temperature is higher then there'll be less condesate. But in the winter, there will be a lot more. Note what season has the most condensate on the house windows. Of course if you have a fishroom, with not heated tanks, just having the room heated, you'll have no condensate, but if you have anything in the tank that blows bubbles or similar, you'll get splashes forming LIKE a condensate.

Why weren't they available when I was over there?? Grrrr

While working on a farm in my youth, one of my jobs was to get into the water tank, that collected water from the roof and clean it out. What I saw in there made me puk. It was a decomposing oppossum, with no fur on it, nicely polluting our water supply. I then realized why the water tasted like it did and why our clothes always smelt like a dead animal. Man, it still tightens my stomach muscles.

As a newbee student at the Mahurangi Tech Institute, we were issued with a book, Tropical Fish lopedia, by Mary Bailey and Peter Burgess, ISBN I 86054 102 X. Sections on Fish Management, Aquarium Management, Fish in Health and Illness. It is a soft backed book of 352 pages, and not yet having got into it, I can't give a full run down on it, but from what I've seen of it so far, it will be fairly close to the front of my book-shelves.

What does the lid on your tank look like. Is it one piece of glass?? If so, get the lid cut lengthwise about 1/3 to 2/3rds, with the smaller to the front, When feeding, lift the front glass by the leading edge towards the tank and the condesate will go into the tank again.

So it appears that the answer is save ya dollars to buy another tank and fish.
-
In your profile you have "Fish expert at Jansens pet shop", which shop are you at?? Oh, by the way, I see no good reason why those fish could not live together.

Could be an attack of blue-green algae Sharn.

jason_sheman, before we go anywhere, welcome to the FNZAS forum. Not a good way to start if you ask me with having to report a sick fish, but let's get going. First of all, this part of the fish is called it's gills. They are used to enable the fish to obtain oxygen from the water. If the water conditions are not right, they can become inflamed (going red) thru to actually turning to mush with the obvious results of death. You will have to explain to us; what size tank you have, how long it has been set up, how many fish are in it, what sort of fish they are, what temperature is the tank being run at, what is the pH of the water. I have my own views on what is wrong with the fish, but to confirm it, the above questions will have to be answered for any of us here to be able to give you any concrete reply to help.

Palmie is an earthquake area, with a stand like that, it would be a good safety factor to tag it to the wall of the house. It is only two holes for the screws into the wooden framing. Better than finding the lot on the floor one day huh??

Bloody hell Phil, can you remember back that far?? I have just had two different shipments of fish come in. One by NOW courier, and contract on to NZPost. Good overnight service, arrived at 11.00am in the morning. The other was fron NZ Couriers. I heard a knock on the door, I go to answer it, open and see a card fall down on the porch. I read it "No one home, pick up at 4.30 at depot." Six hours later.   The van is backing out the drive. I take off after the w--k-r and abuse S--T out of him, recover my box of fish, then immediately ring up his firm and complain. His excuse, "It was quiet and no one was around" It took me all of ten seconds to go from my computer to open the door. Now you can see why I was a tad ummm, brassed off.

I split it and started another thread as it was intruding on the other thread. Now get your A into G and get up some pics of your fish room. Hope you have some progress ones too. You don't know how much it inspires others contemplating it to do something about it.

Watch the female Spider, that she doesn't kill the male. They are a bit like that if the tank is too small or the male hasn't got refuges.

Very effective as far as heating goes. We have one on the NZKA show stand, all of the tanks are heated in this fashion. If you are doing multiple tank setup tho, it is important that you have approx the same amount of water in each tank as the control tank, which is the one where the thermostst is set up in. The thermostat is the same that you'll find on a heater/stat, but without the heating coil.

Brian, can't seem to find the wire you mean off the SOG site. If you can find it, post the address of it.

Another water change is needed. That one was probably more damaged gillwise than the others. Just keep doing the water changes while the filter catches up. Sorry to hear that your fish died.
