Alisha, you don't have to belong to a club to go to the auction. You have to be an affiliated member to enter any fish in the show, but at some times there are "open" entries, when anyone can enter. Could always pay just $10 and join the NZKA. Alan

Please ignore the diatribe above Chris. I have found that if you leave all the spawn together, very little fighting is observed. Must read those posts a bit better next time before I throw an answer. Alan

My platys are coloured at birth, ditto the swordtails. LFS will take them when THEY think they can sell them, at the size you have available. I agree with separating from the parents and go another step, separate the bigger ones when about a month old. Maximum water chage for maximum growth. I read some where, that every time you go past the tank, left to right, FEED them, every time you go right to left past the tank, CHANGE the water. On no account let the water become polluted with left over food. This means ammonia, which means baby wipe-out. Under-gravel filters are okay or a sponge filter, they wont suck up the babies. You wont make big $$'s from them, so don't get your hopes too high. Alan

Dropsy isn't really a disease at all. It is actually a symptom itself. Because of this, the definite cause is unknown, so treatment is difficult. The majority of fish with this condition perish. A broad spectrum proprietary antibiotic such as nitrofurazone and furazolidone (Furan-2) coupled with the best possible water quality and food topdressed with kanamycin offers the best chance at treating the underlying illness. hey bill, nothing was said about it having eaten a gutful of fry, I'm sure it would have been. and if so the scales still don't stick out. I'd bet my fishroom on what it is. as for cichlids getting dropsy, I've seen that myself. I belong to a forum in USA (not that that is an end all) that has discussed this problem, and no-one 9incluing myself) had had a sucessful result, even if the initial problem went, the fish was still internally damaged. Some of the best planted tanks i have seen had NO filtration at all. I personally use a gravel from the shores of Lake Rotoma, Rotorua. ( no fore-shore consent for me either). I boil the gravel first after it has been hose washed in a bucket. It is a mixtute of obsidium, pomice, and volcanic black and white scoria. From sand size to 10mm chunks. I also sometimes put it thru a sieve to take out the biggest or smallest grade, depends what I'm after. Alan

As Peg. says, syphon off the bottom to help cut down the developing cysts. This removal of water, and the replacement of it, will "water-down" your medications. Do a little maths to bring the dosage back up. Don't forget to carry on the treatment for ten days after the last white spots are visible on the fish. This may be the one cyst that gets to the bottom, goes thru it's next phase, and sends more of the little buggers out to attack the fish, thereby carrying on the infestation. Dubbie, now you know why we suggest having a quarantine tank to put new arrivals into. Ideal for breeding too between buying newbies. How often do we hear that we just bought these fish, now we have a whitespot outbreak. To put in a few dollars worth of fish into a tank that could possibly hold 100's$$ worth of fish is bordering on, well, you know what I mean. It's also easier treating a small q tank than a main tank, planted out with expensive plants, and having fish in it as well that areallergic to the w/s treatment. You didn't say how big the tank of yours is and what fish you have in it Dubbie. Sorry about the white-spot, but I bet there aren't many in this group that hasn't experienced it. Alan
