    My corydoras!!!

Hi lighter, welcome to the FNZAS Forum. What a fantastic bunch of corydoras you have. What species have you got?? You should be proud of them. Now I know why you wanted to share. Bang-on. Where are you from?? Alan
  2. Ira, I didn't say KILL it when whitespot came up. Or some of the other ones. I say that, (KILL) when I recognize a disease where treatment is useless, it could pass on the illness, or is not worth worring about. Like sheeze, a one month old platy. What happened to the rest of them?? Or what about the rest of the fish in the tank for a fish worth less than 5 cents. Worth risking it if it has TB. I think not. Alan
  3. Dispose off it immediately. Alan
  4. Sorry about that Bruce. Scrapping on the floor. Alan
  5. Actually, the crays they are talking about are the fresh-water ones. Nice to have a dozen or so just off the pot. Alan
  6. Alisha, you don't have to belong to a club to go to the auction. You have to be an affiliated member to enter any fish in the show, but at some times there are "open" entries, when anyone can enter. Could always pay just $10 and join the NZKA. Alan
  7. Please ignore the diatribe above Chris. I have found that if you leave all the spawn together, very little fighting is observed. Must read those posts a bit better next time before I throw an answer. Alan
  8. The one defending the nest and spitting bubbles is the male He's also the fish that is beating the snot out of the other one The female is the dead one in the floating plants with all her fins ripped off, that is if you haven't removed her. Alan ps, the male is the one with the long fins and the female is the one that laid the eggs. Just in case you weren't sure. Al

    platy fry

My platys are coloured at birth, ditto the swordtails. LFS will take them when THEY think they can sell them, at the size you have available. I agree with separating from the parents and go another step, separate the bigger ones when about a month old. Maximum water chage for maximum growth. I read some where, that every time you go past the tank, left to right, FEED them, every time you go right to left past the tank, CHANGE the water. On no account let the water become polluted with left over food. This means ammonia, which means baby wipe-out. Under-gravel filters are okay or a sponge filter, they wont suck up the babies. You wont make big $$'s from them, so don't get your hopes too high. Alan
  10. Not like that. They really stick out and for an inexperienced keeper that would be what was noticeable. That's why it's called "Pine-cone Disease" Andy, don't be offended please by the inexperienced bit. Alan
  11. Dropsy isn't really a disease at all. It is actually a symptom itself. Because of this, the definite cause is unknown, so treatment is difficult. The majority of fish with this condition perish. A broad spectrum proprietary antibiotic such as nitrofurazone and furazolidone (Furan-2) coupled with the best possible water quality and food topdressed with kanamycin offers the best chance at treating the underlying illness. This is with thanks from AngieandAndrewsAquatics, thanks Andrew Alan
  12. hey bill, nothing was said about it having eaten a gutful of fry, I'm sure it would have been. and if so the scales still don't stick out. I'd bet my fishroom on what it is. as for cichlids getting dropsy, I've seen that myself. I belong to a forum in USA (not that that is an end all) that has discussed this problem, and no-one 9incluing myself) had had a sucessful result, even if the initial problem went, the fish was still internally damaged. No offence taken you ol' phart William. Alan
  13. No, put it out of it's misery. Sorry. If you smack it with a brick, put it in a couple of plastic bags so you dont get splattered Alan
  14. To kill it. Throw it hard onto the concrete floor. Sounds gruesome, but it is instantaneous. ?? 2, Don't risk the others in the tank. Alan
  15. nope, disagree Bill. That fish has dropsy, Cure :- - - Kill it Sorry about that, but it is not worth trying to save them. Apparently it is a kidney or liver malfunction. Alan
  16. What a fantastic hit loved it, now in my favs. Thnx herefishiefishie Alan
  17. Some of the best planted tanks i have seen had NO filtration at all. I personally use a gravel from the shores of Lake Rotoma, Rotorua. ( no fore-shore consent for me either). I boil the gravel first after it has been hose washed in a bucket. It is a mixtute of obsidium, pomice, and volcanic black and white scoria. From sand size to 10mm chunks. I also sometimes put it thru a sieve to take out the biggest or smallest grade, depends what I'm after. Alan
  18. and the picture is a dreaded "RED-CROSS". Alan
  19. As Peg. says, syphon off the bottom to help cut down the developing cysts. This removal of water, and the replacement of it, will "water-down" your medications. Do a little maths to bring the dosage back up. Don't forget to carry on the treatment for ten days after the last white spots are visible on the fish. This may be the one cyst that gets to the bottom, goes thru it's next phase, and sends more of the little buggers out to attack the fish, thereby carrying on the infestation. Goodluck in your fight to combat this problem. Alan
  20. Dubbie, please ingnore the part about the size and fish. Humbly apologizes Just re-read your post. Alan
  21. Dubbie, now you know why we suggest having a quarantine tank to put new arrivals into. Ideal for breeding too between buying newbies. How often do we hear that we just bought these fish, now we have a whitespot outbreak. To put in a few dollars worth of fish into a tank that could possibly hold 100's$$ worth of fish is bordering on, well, you know what I mean. It's also easier treating a small q tank than a main tank, planted out with expensive plants, and having fish in it as well that areallergic to the w/s treatment. You didn't say how big the tank of yours is and what fish you have in it Dubbie. Sorry about the white-spot, but I bet there aren't many in this group that hasn't experienced it. Alan
  22. Welcome Dave Did Caryl say a group of us in the evening Didn't think I was a "groupie" at my age. Still, I'mtold that ya never too old. mmmmmmm Make sure you have a comfy chair Concerning joining a club up there You'll have to tell us where in the big "A" you reside, so that we can TRY and point you in the right direction or give you someone to get hold of. Welcome anyway Alan
  23. This is so easy it can be funny Remove the lid from the aquarium where your chocies are. Throw in the nearest TV Remote Controller The first one to it, will be the male. Alan
  24. That makes it hard for getting spawn or tadpoles, and being sure of the species, unless the frogs are seen doing their thing or a pond is used exclusively by one or the other. Alan
  25. They stormed into my house, an x police-woman detective , put my house under quarantine for two weeks while they sussed out me and my story, came back but refused me permission to keep them,so I asked that they be sent to the zoo so they would not be destroyed. They agreed to do that. It was MAF that took them. Reason they found out - - I trust ppl too much and I like talking about my wet-pets. The "grass" used to be a "tree-hugger" that ran the Ellerslie LFS. Alan PS I swapped some WTF for some fire-belly newts. She got the guilts and returned the WTF to Palmie. Al
