  1. A guy I worked with used to fish for squid from the wharf at Rakino and managed to catch a fair few.
  2. Definately looking really good. Thought I would read the whole thread this time. Page 11, Ball Valves. I got mine from LG Gardner for $10.78 and $13.47. First 2 I bought from the North Shore branch and they only had 2 in stock, so went to the City branch and they charged a little more! Page 13, great to see your wife helping! How did you do that? Spill all, what's your secret/bribe? What were the egg crates for? I couldn't quite see them in your tank. Have you got a RCD in your power plugs? And last of all, you could install those venting units that go in the ceiling and just pump the hot air into your ceiling cavity or straight out of your roof.
  3. Hi folks, Can you let me know of any good books on marine fish? I've bought the book on Aquarium Corals by Eric Borneman, which is very informative.
  4. I've made them both already (not glued!), so I will give it a test run. If I find it doesn't work, then I will change it to larger pipes. It will be a good test.
  5. Bummer, that's where I read it from, but must have forgotten about that part. For everyone elses benefit, here is the excerpt from the website that I missed. :-? http://www.dursostandpipes.com/ "If you have a 1 inch bulkhead the standpipe needs to be larger than the bulkhead to work correctly. I get a lot of e-mail questions on why this is. Honestly, I'm not sure. Typically if you use 1 inch PVC pipe on a 1 inch bulkhead you get poor results. (Some exceptions with smaller low flow tanks.) Take my word on it and use 1¼ inch PVC pipe. For very large tanks with large return pumps however, there does not seem to be any need to oversize the standpipe for larger bulkheads such as 1.5 inch. Larger bulkheads can use PVC pipe & fittings that match the size of the bulkhead. (I consider tanks in the 350 gallon and up good candidates for 1.5 inch bulkheads). "
  6. No one mentioned that! They're 20mm PVC Piping. I do have two of them which might help? Oh and the picture of the moonlights which I forgot to add:
  7. Hi Slapers, here's the latest update. I've received my acrylic overflows care of Modern Plastics. I decided on Marine Blue see through. It looks very nice. I'm yet to cut the teeth. It's 3mm thick. They don't have blue see through acrylic any thicker. I was going to use my jigsaw, but I think I will keep with the manual hacksaw. It cost $33.75. Would have cost an extra $60 or more to get them to cut the teeth. You can just see a peak of the colour, not that it really looks like much. Here's a picture of the standpipes as promised. And here's a picture of my Moonlights that I made. I just need to find some 20mm bungs for both ends. I'll do another update once I have the teeth cut. Which hopefully will be this weekend.
  8. So who's bringing the chains for this water change?
  9. I'd love to, but haven't setup my tank fully yet. Next time.
  10. So the concensus is to keep the lid off because of the heat issue more than anything else.
  11. That's a good idea Thunderstorm. I could keep the transformer, but if I do, it might be easier just to connect it to a timer. The Solar was to help save on a little bit of power.
  12. Someone on Nanotank forum was experimenting on using the solar garden lights so it charges while the main tank lights are on and when off, the LED lights light up. Great idea in theory. Been thinking of how I can do this with my 5 LED's. If I made it 6 LED's they will require 18V which is equivalent to 2x 9v batteries, so if I can rig up a solar panel that would charge up the 2x 9v battery, then it should run.
  13. You could put the barrel in the roof and then you have gravity on your side and it will be out of the clutter!!
  14. I've noticed a lot of people without their tank lids. Is there a reason for this? Would having a lid benefit, like reduce evaporation and no fish jumping out? Cheers HelifaxNZ
  15. Just came back from Modern Plastics in the CBD, down from Les Mills, they will cut you Acrylic pieces exactly the size you specify. Not bad pricing either.

    Seio bashers

So are Eheim in a different league of their own, compared to Stream? Because I've ordered the 1250 for my returns. Oh, maybe you guys are talking about powerheads as apposed to pumps? I'm sure I've seen the Stream brand. Either at Jansens or Hollywood or Pet Barn (Lincoln Rd, Henderson). Can't remember which one.

    Fragging stuff

I've been searching on a thread of how to frag. This is very good - especially RnB's explaination on how to 'hack' a coral. Is there any updates/experiences on other types of corals that people can post on fragging? Cheers HelifaxNZ
  18. Just finished making the standpipes last night (photo's to come). Going to get one more ball valve today and organise my overflows.
  19. Thanks for your kind words. Awe, sorry to hear about your moonlights AND the bulb! I love Nano and Pico tanks. They are just so beautiful and there's just something about having a mini mini reef tank.
  20. That is one great looking Nano. My one is 91 Litres cube. It was going to be a Nano, but I've mis-calculated some what. Still, it is no where near as big as these other guys. Well done. Keep the photos coming.
  21. I'm glad you're down in Hamilton with the flu!
  22. Thanks Slappers. Your setup is awesome too!
  23. Forgot to mention, I've got a little UPS as well so hopefully it will be ok for the times we have blackouts. I'll be plugging in the heater and the pump only. All the rest can be on mains.
  24. It's sitting on the bench in our home office. Thanks Brianemone for that tip. I didn't even think about that! Just bought some more plumbing today so will start on at least the durso's tonight. I'm waiting on a quote to get my overflow, etc cut. Let's hope its not going to cost too much. If so I'll cut the teeth and holes out myself. Not sure what I'm going to put in there yet. Definately soft corals. I'm yet to get the lighting from Ben. All takes time and money - lots of it! Maybe I'll win the $2mil on Wednesday.
