  1. Better luck next time Wok. I know someone that couldn't spawn convicts for trying and they DID have a proven pair. So at least you got the B/N's to spawn.
  2. Hell, sorry Ruthie I missed that bit about the filter, Alan is right. What type of filter do you have?... Sponge Box Canister Power head.... etc And how often have you been cleaning it out.
  3. Hi penguinleo Sorry I did mean to respond to your post earlier. Yes Apisto fry don't move well, I get away with it sometimes but that is because of the system I run. I also find even if you move them once free swimming they do not grow as well as the fry that remain with the mother. If you are wanting to breed them It would be best if they had there own tank. Good luck for next time.
  4. yep that's me. Water quality is probably the reason. I do daily 5% water changes so my water is clear as - no colouration at all. If you haven't already, you could put salt in your water 1teaspoon/4 to 5lts live bearers prefer it. If adding the salt it must be done over a couple of days as I don't know what else you have in the tank and replaced as a % each time you do a water change.
  5. A little off topic but.. Reef, nice discus and Someone said the liked Wild discus, I just happen to know an importer in New Plymouth has wild heckels on there list out Monday just gone.
  6. What substrates do you use in your tank Warren - just just 3-5mm gravel or do you use clay balls as well??
  7. Not really, sorry to argue the point - not that it matters. Some but not all (and don't ask me which as I don't know)fall out of the brine before the sodium chloride, which is a funny term as it does not fall it rises to the top and is blown off by the wind. If you go to lake grassmaire the wire fences are covered in a cement like product, this is 1 or more of the chemicals on the list. And thats why it's no good to use as a salt mix for marine organisms, you even have to add stuff to it if you want to grow brine shrimp to adults..
  8. No need to apologize, sweet as.
  9. No no no thats not what I meant at all evilkieval69. An expensive CLAY substrate for absorbing iron is a waste of money if no under substrate heating is employed. I have seen some VERY VERY impressive tanks over the years that do not use under substrate heating.
  10. evilk.. wrote When I first saw the import from Phil they certainly looked like altum. I have a few of them and they don't look like either species 100%, so they may well be a X. Some have the up turned snout but not as extreme as pure altum and the others don't look like peruvian altums aka P. scalare either as I had them and there colours are very different. anyone wont some nice large angels going cheap for there display tank??
  11. Does this mean it's time for another tank Wok??? :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: MORE TANKS MORE TANKS MORE TANKS  Got a little carryed a way there
  12. ?? I thought the ability of some clays to absorb Iron was governed by water flow through them = under gravel heating to create water movement through the substrate.?? No under gravel heating = pretty much a waste of money.

    Leopard Fish

Yeah there not cheap. Had some people ask me to help empty there pond a few years back containing leopard fish. They kept around 10 and asked if I could sell the rest for them the wholesale price was higher then Guppies at the time and probably still is, as Caryl mentioned there not that prolific compared to other live bearers.
  14. I think you will find if you look at the back of most supermarket salts it is from lake grassmaire ( spelling ) which means it is sea salt. Plain salt in supermarkets has and anti caking agent to keep it free flow, I use this salt all the time to hatch B/S and also used it when I bred Nothobranchius ( killis from the plains of Southern Africa ) with NO problems at all. Rock salt MADE in NZ is still sea salt but does not have the anti caking agent, which means it is just salt nothing else. So the salt to use is plain table salt (No Iodine) or rock salt.
  15. I think Val would look best. Remember you tank will grow and Val's propagate readily. So as you get young plants from other parts of the tank move them into the desired position.
  16. I haven't breed mine yet Paul, not got around to it. They are full grown though and the females look like they carry plenty of row so I would expect at least 100 + fry from them. Must do it soon as there all primed to go, all I need to do is drop the temp.
  17. I think your at least 100 short, I reckon closer if not over 500.

    Wok's fish

I could never do that when I had heaps of killies Wok. As my cats would think I had left treats out for them Nice fish Wok
  19. It depend on the system you have as to how much you get, mine does 50GL a day. Warren what does the TDS OR PPM work out to be with you buffering recipe?.
  20. Nice pic's Billaney, How old are the little buggers.
  21. WOW, The krib's are particularly nice, you don't see them looking that good in the shops very often, NOT in Wellington anyway.
  22. It's really up to you Ruth. But probably. When I breed my guppies I keep all my breeding stock ( different colour ) seperate. This stops males of the wrong colour or quality from breed with the females. I also separate the fry as soon as I can sex them easily( 3 weeks old ) in to tanks for males and females that way I can select only the best fish for breeding rather then letting them do as they please which would degrade the traits I may be looking for. It really depend on how involved you wont to go and how many tanks your allowed/can afford.
  23. Hi Ruth Welcome to the forum. I hope you find what your looking for. Try reading the archive in livebearer.
