  1. I may have created problems for myself but I didnt like the look of "no sand" so when I changed my tank over I did the rock landscaping and then put a one inch layer of sand along the front of the rocks, leaving the rest of the tank bare behind the rocks. In my opinion it gives me the best of both worlds. An atrractive sand front but clear base at the rear of the tank which allows for vacuuming the muck.
  2. Jzer Welcome to our second home Look at my posting "generousity above and beyond" and you can see why this forum is so..o good
  3. It was not originally my intention to mention on this forum what happened to us today, because disasters are rather embarrasing. I came in from outside this afternoon to find our favourite tank had blown the heater and the tank was on the point of boiling. Needless to say all but one of the fish had succumbed to the heat. All the discus and Debby's favourite fish were gone, a $1000 worth in all. Having ordered some more fish from a member of this forum we had to contact the member and ask if we could cancel the order as we could no longer take them, although we would look at it again at a later date. This person is a member of this forum although we have never met in person. AND MY POINT IS The forum is a place to exchange ideas and to promote and help the hobby of fishkeeping. Much to our surprise the member has since contacted us and offered to sell us the fish at a much reduced price, and was prepared to hold them for a couple of weeks until we sorted things out. We would love to say who it was but this is not fair and not what was asked for. For this reason I have posted this message as a special thank you to the member and to also show the very great value there is in having this forum available to all> So remember when in dire straits there is always some-one out there ready and willing to help if they can, and they are most likely to be a member of this forum. Once again a special thanks to the member concerned.

  8. We have been using "Millenium 3000 hang on filters with some success. Tanks have 3 turtles in each 1200 cm tank. Need cleaning once a week.
  9. Gretal If you do go out of town there is a place in palmy that has all grades of poly. I think it is on the same road as Wet Pets.
  10. I have seen them in NZ at an importers and they keep them in "agee preserving jars until sold. doesn't look at all nice but they seem to survive

  15. there is 2 150mh in a reflector which is 1000mm long they are seperated by 200mm fluros. The reflector is a commercially made one. The reflector sits approx 250mm in from each end. there is a tendancy for there to be only low light reflection at the sides of the tank and little lighting at the rear but this is not a problem as I have no corals to the rear. each of the mh's are normal size i.e about 200x200. Are you sort of suggesting that I would need further lighting whichever way I go. Your experience is appreciated
  16. Yes The new tank is better set up with a properly plumbed sump with dividers. And it would take up less room in the lounge. With the plumbing it would be almost 300mm closer to the wall. depending on the answers I get it may even be better to consider replumbing the existing tank
  17. My present marine tank is 1500x700hx800d. It has 2x150mh lights and 2 fluros in a metre holder. The tank is working with this set-up. I am considering changing to a new tank 1800x600x640. would I need to add an extra halide for the extra length or can I stay with what I have got. Any help appreciated thanks
  18. Dont worry Caryl we would pay your fares and even let you take Grant with you
  19. brilliant photos Caryl New idea!!! Send Caryl out to take pictures: post them on the forum and save costs of going to Conference and travel.
  20. as usual Caryl a great selection of photos. Proved that it was an enjoyable weekend. I personally would have edited a couple of photos completely out Regards Mitch
  21. To report so far. Caryl & Grant did make it across the strait an hour late and pretty roughed up. Caryl was out of it on travel pills so had a reasonable trip. Warren was late due to car problems in Wanganui. Other than that all arrived safely and on time and have had their first share of Taranaki Ale and wonderful food. We made certain the temperature was lowered to 7c so they would feel at home. Even the heating at the venue went on the blink to assist with the lower temps. This of course is a planned method to assure fine conditions for the rest of the time. The bar closed at 10.30pm and all toddled off to their various dwellings.
  22. the test kits I am using are all less than one month old. I have been down today and done a 50% water change and within minutes the corals changed from a dull grey colour to lovely green and mauve Hope this sudden change is not now going to kill all the tank off. Did use water from my tank which I was doing a water change on so some of my parameters would not have been 1st class. This hopefully will be O.K.
  23. rechecked KH still comes out the same
  24. It is not my intention to start an argument over this tank. the information I am giving was just for a matter of interest The owners stated that apart from food every thing with the tank was as given to them when they bought it. From memory the reef solution was about half full. they still had the original bag of salt that came with the tank As I said at the start I cant explain it but I do wish all marine tanks were this easy to keep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They didnt even have test kits and were quite surprised when I mentioned testing the water
