I bow to your expertise. As it died overnight this is most likely the answer for the worm. Thanks for that. Now I am totally in the dark.

When I took it out of the tank and checked it I found a centipede type worm stuck between its gills. I guess this was causing it great stress hence its behaviour. It is always one of those difficult calls. Do you take it out of the tank and check it and cause it uneccesary stress which may kill it or in this case possibly find the cause and save it.

My allard clown has suddenly started going crazy. It is twisting over and over, diving from the top to the bottom of the tank and even leaping out of the water. There is a yellow tang, percula clown and yellow tailed damsel in the same tank with no problems. Help appreciated please. Will go and do water tests shortly

I have to agree with the previous posts Bought some fish from Phil which I brought back to Taranaki with no trouble then had some couriered from Discus Haven which also travelled without problems. Hamilton would be a sweet trip. Would highly recommend you make the trip to Phils. It is very informative and you get a far better idea of what is available

Like the idea of a get together. Would love to see it in Hamilton then I could probably bring a couple of new enthusiasts. Would also show Jaffas that there is country below the Bombays. We could even supply them maps so they dont get lost in a foreign country

This message appears to have got lost when the server was down. I would like to thank all those that gave us support with the loss that we had and a special thank you to those that offered fishes to replace our losses. I have now had time to think about what I am going to do and have decided that at this stage I will close the fishroom down. I just dont think I could handle another loss of that magnitude again. This does not mean that we are going out of fish as we will still have the 2 4ft tanks and the marine tank inside. At a later date I will give thought to using the fishroom as a breeding room for coldwater fish but will have to look at the availability of the less common types of goldfish e.g calico's, lionhead, bubbleeyes etc. Once again a BIG thank you to you all. It has been said many times that this forum is one big family and something like this re-enforces that view. At times like this I think of how many of us have never met face to face. I can imagine us all walking down the street and never knowing who we have walked past. Who knows!! one of these days we could have a forum get together.

Just over a month ago I had a tank of discus and Frontosa's. The heater blew and I lost the whole tank. With generous help from others I reset the tank up. Last week it was a small fire which fortunately only cost me a saltwater skimmer They say things come in three's. Well they are right. Early this week I went out to the fishroom to find it completely switched off. Reset the fuse and checked later. Still going so it is safe to go to bed. First thing next morning out to the fishroom and all off again. Start from scratch. Take the airpumps apart and check they are working and replace the diaphrams just in case. Restart and keep a watch. Overnight it goes again. Test through everything, lights, pumps, and heater. all seem to be going ok so switch back on but out it goes again. Replace the heater with a new one. Finally track the problem to a faulty 4 plug board and get the room up and running again. By this stage I have lost three tanks of fish. Check the room hourly and every thing is running sweet. Finally last night at 11pm recheck the room and find the room like an oven (38degrees) and all the tanks are full of hot water and dead fish. The thermostat on the heater was faulty and did not switch off. Today we have spent most of the day emptying tanks and burying heaps of fish. Angels, cory's, cichlids, guppies, bristlenose, a 12inch pleco, neons and whatever. From thirty tanks we are now down to six that I managed to save. Needless to say that the fishroom will now become that extra space for storage that we always wanted. To Mystic this is now a good time for me to reread your posting

Brian The guy that makes my tanks uses Meths for the final clean. Leaves no residue as it evaporates as you use it. Mitch

I am no expert on the subject but from watching the various topics on importing my best advice is forget it before you start  Overseas suppliers will only deal in big numbers (1000's). You would need MAF approval which would entail Quarantine facilities etc etc. Honestly NZKA have looked at it and found it almost unrealistic, private individuals have found the same thing. Unless you wish to start your own Quarantine facility one of the biggest drawbacks has been found to be the cost of hiring tanks in licenced facilities. Even if you got around this the cost of the Guppys would skyrocket to the extent that they become tropical gold. Hope this helps, I hate being a wet blanket but best you know the facts

Sorry to hear about the tornado. And here are we complaining about the non-stop rain. Been watching this post off and on and am most impressed with the quick progress on your new tank which is already looking impressive Waiting impatiently for pics of completed set-up.

Imagine this if you can. There are 2 1200cm tanks on stands, one behind the other. The rear tank is empty and the front tank is being used as a sump for surplus live rock etc for the marine tank. It has 2 fluros, a heater and skimmer running from a plug box, which was sitting on top of the spare tank. Sitting on top of the rear tank is an "Instant Ocean" skimmer which I was trying out but wasn't happy with the way the motor on it was running, which is why I unplugged it and sat it on the top of the rear tank. It was not conected to any power or anything else. In the meantime I decided to go to town to do the usual things that you do and duly arrived home 4 hours later. I walked back into the garage to an awful smell that could only be connected to fire and burnt plastic. Nothing on the Marine tank was going, no lights, heater or skimmer. All the glass on the top of the spare tank was lying in the bottom of the tank in many pieces, there was melted polystyrene on the floor and over everything was this black mass. I finally worked out that it was the spare skimmer which had completely disappeared apart from the cap which I found a distance away on the floor. All I can assume is that the cat must have knocked the skimmer over onto the plugboard, then the residue water shorted on the plugbox and set fire to the skimmer. Fortunately no damage was done to the marine tank and no major damage in the garage apart from the fact that I am now down one skimmer.

O.K. guys I have changed the lights and now have the 250's running but still need to add the 150 to the centre. One of the 250's is giving a nice clean white light whilst the other one is a dull yellow. These were second hand so I guess that the yellow indicates a new bulb required. Yes or No thanks

my tank (1800x600x640) is currently lit with 2x 150mh lights, which are not quite lighting the full length of the tank. I have just obtained 2x250hm lights. Am I better to add a further 150 light or change to the 250's. If I change what are the pitfalls and what do I have to watch for when I do the change. Any help appreciated thanks.

Me too Have recently changed my tank and improved the sump set-up. Have also spent the last couple of days advising new converts on setting up their new marine tanks. Imagine three tanks in Taranaki. Who else can boast a 200% increase in tanks

I have the same skimmer. Run airpump at 2pm. works O.K.

Thanks Michael Part of my reason for asking this question was to get the experience of other members. Up until about a year ago I would not have considered any other type of heater but a Jager. Since then I dont think there is a member of our club who has not had a problem with Jager and they have such a bad name down here that the not one of the LFS will even consider stocking them. In fact the shop I normally deal with told the Rep in no uncertain terms to take them out of their shop and not come back. From my searches on the net it appears Jager no longer manufactures but I seem to recall reading somewhere that Jager heaters are now manufactured by Eheim. Do you know if this is correct and have they therefore improved in quality and reliability. thanks

Has anybody experienced any problems with "Jabo" or "Aqua one" heaters. I see the price difference is minimal but I'm not willing to risk my fish with cheap heaters that break down in a very short time.

How do you stop "Baby" convicts from growing up. I have just been to a house where the local fish shop sold them convicts for a community tank. The convicts fed well and the guppies and neons and platties strangely dissappeared.
