    refugium

Having just seen some wonderful Auckland tanks it is obvious that I should change my simple sump to a refugium. My original idea was to put a smaller tank inside the existing tank, let it overflow into the larger tank and put it through a skimmer back to the main tank. Reading through some of the posts there is talk of "baffles". I assume these are to stop air bubbles from going into the main tank. will this still happen if the water is going through a skimmer or will I need to get a tank built with baffles.
  2. Even though I have 5 pumps and a twin overflow outlet on my tank I am still not completely happy with the water movement. 3 pumps are "Hagen 802" powerheads and 2 are just ordinary pond pumps. the Tank is 1500X800x700, Marine. My question is are these Hagens sufficiently powerful, is there sufficent pumps in the tank and should I dump the pond pumps and put in additional powerheads. If additional powerheads what size please.
  3. Are Jansens open this sunday

  6. All clubs that will have representative attending Conference 2005 are asked to advise us of their club colours. If you dont have a specific colour for your club your provincial colours will do thanks. Dont ask why you will find out eventually
  7. Personally I would be dissapointed to see a solely Auckland Reef club at this stage as I feel that there a lot of us throughout NZ who would like to belong to a Marine type club but lack the numbers in our areas to make this viable. I have travelled to Auckland a couple of times to attend meetings which I found to be of good value and very informative, and therefore would support the Auckland members in their attempt to heal rifts and get a viable marine club up and going. If you want to start a club go for for it but PLEASE consider the possibility of an NZMAS club. This is not a slight on Auckland reef keepers or any others, just a thought which I hope will be of value to all reef keepers.
  8. Good news guys and gals The registration forms will be posted this weekend. Please take note of the warning re accommodation.
  9. Dont want to say told you so but get involved with Taranaki Conference and we can give 100% guarantee of gremlin disease. Latest in our saga is the bus company has now been sold. No information on new owners but we have our fingers crossed
  10. When we decided to host the Conference 2005 we had to come up with a suitable theme. We chose "TIME OUT TARANAKI". This was to become more appropriate than we ever imagined. We organised a visit to the Abalone farm! they took "Timeout" and closed the doors  . Next was Brooklands Aquarium: MAF made them "time-out' no visitors. . O.K. lets try catering; sweet all organised, menu good! sorry we are taking time-out find some-one else  . Bus driver arranged!! no he's taking time-out to get over a heart attack . Accomodation: well nearly arranged until part closed down. More "time-out" In spite of all this we have arranged a Conference that you will need "TIME-OUT" from after all the fun we have arranged. Sorry about the delay but we also managed to persuade Caryl's printer to take "time-out" so delaying the Aquarium World, with initial information. Now is the "TIME-ON" to start planning for your trip to CONFERENCE 2005 Taranaki Queens birthday 4-6th June 2005. TAPS CLUB
  11. I HAVE JUST PUT A BUBBLE ANENOME IN MY TANK. I UNDERSTAND THESE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE FED EVERY COUPLE OF DAYS WITH A PIECE OF MUSSEL. HOW DO I FEED IT WHEN IT KEEPS DISAPPEARING OUT OF SIGHT. I HAVE ALREADY STRIPPED THE TANK ONCE TO BRING IT BACK TO THE FRONT BUT OF COURSE OVERNIGHT IT WENT WALKIES AGAIN AND IS NOW NOWHERE TO BE SEEN. SHOULD I TIE A PIECE OF STRING ON IT AND PULL IT BACK WHEN I WANT TO SEE IT
  12. thanks guys you have just saved us from a disaster not to mention wasting cold hard cash
  13. my tank has 2 blue/green damsels and I am expecting 2 percula clowns this week.( young clowns) My questions please! 1. can I put maroon clowns with these. I am looking at adults? 2. where can I get a male 3. what is a reasonable price to pay for these. Any help would be appreciated. P.S. my tank is 1500x800x700
  14. My tuppence worth on one of the comments. Quote "without lfs having marines on display how would we introduce new people to the hobby" In my case, as a club member I was the only person to have started tropical cichlids. Now I am not alone.Others have seen my fish and started their own collections. The same with marines. I am only a newbie with a moderate tank but it has already aroused sufficient interest to have another member talking of starting his own tank. This is not saying there is no place for the LFS but that it is not necessarily the be all and end all.
  15. We have travelled to Auckland to attend one meeting and would have been there this weekend but for a confusion of dates. If you were to have a meeting on a sunday (we would probably travel down on Saturday) we would be willing to help make up numbers. I can also give you the benefit of my vast experience i.e I know how to build a stand and put a tank on it. I can even fill it with water. anything further ask an expert. Debby & Mitch
  16. I have four of them and have never seen any sign of aggression except when two fish go for the same piece of food. Other than that they have been very peaceful. The older one is in with electric yellows and zebras the other three are with discus and giant danios. I am wrapped with the price being offered. I dont consider them that rare and I only paid $75 each. His price in my opinion is far too high but as I say just my opinion. Like anything else it is what the market will stand
  17. fully agree. Hoping to be able to catch up with you this Sunday Mitch
  18. BUGGAR  Would love to attend but too late to change our arrangements for this weekend and cant make it two weeks in a row. Have a good meeting guys.
