  1. Why not. It is a fact of todays commercial world. You want high wages but expect to pay low prices for the same product. How many of our household products are still made in New Zealand. Do we have anybody making TV, computor, electric jugs etc ,etc,
  2. budget motel Te Rapa. nothing spectacular but good for a couple of nights. About $60 per night from memory

    spare parts

I buy a small sheet of diaphram rubber from Shuk Engineering, gasket manufacturers, and cut out my own ones. That way I have spare material for any size daiphram and from memory the last sheet I purchased, about 12in square cost me $6.
  4. When you contact us I can also give advise on shifting marine and if you are good I will even let you see my tank
  5. Thanks Caryl. Just thought I would add our phone number in the hope that there might be others that would also show an interest. Would love to be able to get the club up and running again.
  6. About 3 weeks ago I came out in the morning to find my cichlid tank had turned belly up and all my fish were floating on the top dead. Being in the middle of selling my house I decided not to do anything with the tank, cleaned out the dead fish, and just switched everything off, filter, heater, airline etc. Today I finally got around to emptying the tank and was gaily syphoning the water out when to my surprise I saw a giant Danio swimming around. As the water got lower I found 1 adult electric Yellow, 2 young juveniles and 2 giant Danios. It amazes me that the fish could have survived this length of time with no heating and without any food for the time. They are now comfortably swimming in a new tank with other cichlids.
  7. thanks mate. will confirm details as soon as I know.
  8. I wish to buy some goldfish on Trademe but they are pick-up only. The seller has no experience in freighting. Is there anybody that could pick-up 10 fish from Halfmoon Bay and arrange freight to Taranaki PLEASE. Will of course re-imburse fuel and freight costs. Thanks
  9. I have always used a "silage pit" cover from local farm supplies shop. 15 metre x 5 metre $49. I have never had any problem with it lasting except for a large dog jumping in the pond and putting a hole in it. My pond is 4m x 4m and has been running for about 5 years without replacement.
  10. Hey JimR I really appreciate what you are saying but this is the type of things that happen in fish keeping and it is something that we just have to live with. As I say, while I really appreciate the thought I would not like to start a precedent which would see every person losing fish possibly expecting financial help. I am not casting aspersions at anybody I am just trying to say thank you for the thought in the best way I can.
  11. Answer " read the small print" all care but no responsibility. What makes it worse from my point of view is that this comes on top of some low life cleaning out a pond with 28 celestials from the front lawn pond so all in all it has been a rather expensive week of losses.
  12. It pays to make absolutely sure who you are dealing with. We have put our house on the market and decided to get a commercial cleaner in to waterblast the brickwork outside. We asked did they use any chemicals when spraying and were assured that they did not use any. Day after they left I discovered that my pond of lionheads was full of floating dead fish. I rung the company and asked again "did you use any chemicals" they replied no we dont use chemicals. Further questions to discover that we just use a household detergent to assure a good clean. Detergent of course, even in small doses is fatal to most fish hence why I have lost a pond of fish.
  13. go to any farm supplies shop and get a silage pit cover. 15 metres by 5 metres approx $48. This is better than any pond liner that you will buy. I have had mine down for 5 years without any problem.
  14. As a previous customer of Jansens, I always made it a point of going in and even if not buying,(because I always seem to arrive between shipments) ,having a chat with the staff who were very knowledgeable. Over recent times I have been in the shop to be ignored by kids who are more interested in their own conversation and if you can actually get their attention you find that what they know about marines could be printed on a pinhead. Now I dont even bother calling in. So it is not always price of the product, but other factors that also put a business down the drain.
  15. When I first saw this posting my immediate re-action was it had to be a joke. Alan was an institution that was always going to be there, be it with a witticism, some good advice or just passing on valuable experience. I still dont believe that he could possibly have been taken from us and send, on our personal behalf, and on behalf of the Taranaki Aquarium and pond Society our deepest sympathy to the family and our sincerest condolences to Fish keepers all who have lost a valuable mentor and mate. Alan Now you will be able to keep all the fish you like with no government busybodies interferring. Debby & Mitch and TAPS
  16. Talking to a local today who is running a coldwater marine tank. He has had a visit from the sea police who have told him get rid of the crays and all other undersize fish or face a judge. Alternative is buy a licence takes at least 10 weeks to process, costs $100's dollars and must be renewed each year at similar cost. Be warned and keep your tank to yourself
  17. From what I understand most garden centres stock netting of this type. The only thing to watch out for is quality of the netting. Some types have only a single strand which breaks down very quickly. There is a type that we buy locally that has a double twisted stand and this lasts very well. It also has the advantage that it can be stretched tight.
  18. A few days ago there was a Tom Scott cartoon in our local paper about a research station in wellington. Do any of you know if the resource application for this station was approved.
  19. mouth of the manawatu river as the tide starts to come in, or up river later on. You would need a clear river to be able to see them and then only if you are lucky.

    Bulb Blowout

I didn't state the make or the supplier as I did not think that was a fair go. But I will say that there was no problem as the bulb was replaced by the supplier :-?

  23. Can somebody please clarify for me how Tunze streams are attached to the tank. From all the pictures I can see they hang on the glass. I am looking at purchasing a 6060 or similar but my tank has a glass lip all around of 40mm. Will a tunze hang on this. The other problem is that under this hang-on system I would need to have it near the centre of my tank facing the front glass. The tank is 1800x640x640. I am wondering if I need more flow as I have 2 seio's and 2 outflows from the sump run by a laguna 7.
