  1. If I was to go to the beach and catch a Kawhai, take it to the local and raffle it I would be prosecuted. If I dived for a crayfish and sold it I would be prosecuted. If I go down to the river and catch a good number of native fish i.e. whitebait I can take them to the local butcher and sell them for $100. Ask DOC why this is so and they look at you blankly. So much for protection of native species in this country, but dont do anything to destroy the trout fishery or you will be jail before you turn around.
  2. according to our local regional council who make a study of these elusive fishes they have identified is excess of 20 different varietys. would make for an interesting exercise if you wish to record a breeding. Our local DOC rep gave a talk to our club at one stage and said that there were only seven (shows how little they know) varietys from the common to the more rare. They asked that we check them as we catch them and kindly put the rarer ones back. The regional council said that the only true way to identify them was by microscope. Can you just see a line-up of whitebaiters all equiped with their microscope checking each fish as they caught it. I deffinately wouldn't want to catch a big shoal at that rate.
  3. Dont want to be picky but if you take the babies to somebody to confirm you would have to take the parents as well. A breeding is only recognised when there are 10 fry and the parents in the possession of the breeder. This means it would be better to try to get somebody from FNZAS to come and look at them.
  4. moderator please. Just realised I posted this in the wrong place. Can it be moved please. Mitch
  5. Unfortunately I have to advise that our Life Member and stalwart of our Club, Val Smith, passed away early this morning. Up until very recently Val was still attending Club meetings and making suggestions for Club outings. Even in her last week she made arrangements to donate the remainder of her fish tanks and associated equipment to the Club. She will be sadly missed by those that knew her and we will be gathering in Inglewood on Saturday at 10.30am to say farewell to a lovely lady. On behalf of her friends at Taps and Fnzas we extend our Condolences to Val's family. M.A. Minchington President Taranaki Aquarium & Pond Society
  6. I keep my white clouds out all winter with no problems. For plants I would probably use a couple of small lillies. If no one in your area is interested I would be happy to take the Orandas off your hands Regards Mitch

I am very happy with the way my corals are growing but I feel that something is missing Recently I have purchased three new corals. 1. green sacrophytum? 2. red polyps 3. another coral whose name escapes me. This one I actually saw in the tank before I purchased it and I know it was green. For some reason each of these corals are brown in colour in my tank. Am I missing the correct lighting. I have 2 x 250 halides and a moonlight fluro. Comments please

  12. I have had a phone call asking for help with a tyre track eel. I can only give the information that I was given. It appears to be only a young eel that has started breathing funny and has not taken any food for the last 2 days. Sorry about this but anybody have any ideas please.
  13. Just a bump to remind you all
  14. we once purchased a tank which was 12 months old. It had a shark, angel, firemouth, and a number of tetras along with a red eared turtle. these had all got along famously until the turtle realised that anything else in the tank was meals on fins. He started with the shark and moved his way down by size, we had to remove him quickly. On saying that I have a 6ft tank with 5 turtles which I try to feed guppies but the turtles just let them breed and only eat the guppies when they have died.
  15. There are still some bits and pieces left from the set-up I have been trying to sell recently. It has been decided that this stuff will be sold at Taranaki Aquarium & Pond Society auction on Sunday 13 August, starting at 4pm. Venue is the Egmont Village community centre and everybody is welcome. If you are looking for extra tanks or a few fish or bits and bobs this is the place to be. All the tanks will be sold with no reserve so you are sure to get a bargain. Light refreshments will be served at the end of the sale which we anticipate will be around 6pm. This auction is open to everybody Club member or not. See you all there Mitch President Taps
  16. if you are talking plastic lining the best value is a silage cover from your local farm supplies.
  17. When I got mine I was warned that it would only eat the small apstasia so would have to still treat the bigger ones. No one told the copperband and he has gladly munched through all sizes. I now grow apstasia in a second tank to make sure he always has a food supply. Never thought I would ever deliberately put this pest in my tank
  18. well the car is ready. Tomorrow morning we will be loading our contribution to your auction. We are looking at probably 25 lots. plants, fish, driftwood etc etc. Remember bring lots of money. Taranaki is proud to support our neighbouring club and we intend to go home with an empty vehicle.
  19. Has anybody kept red carnation coral. I see they were advertised in Christchurch and thought they were very nice. I then did some research!! After consulting 3 coral books, and looking on the web I got advise from:: Need strong current and very high light, to low water movement and prefer shade. Also very difficult to keep to a good coral for the beginner. Makes it very hard to make the right purchase.
  20. Have you considered an alternative to building a room. I purchased the back off an old milk truck which gave me insulation, space and easy clean floor. Our room is 5x2.5 metres and comfortably takes forty tanks. You are more than welcome to come for a look seeand you could also meet some of our club members Regards Mitch & Debby

    Water loss

I run my sump outside in a plastic tool box type box. Whenever I lift the lid there is a fair amount of condensation on the lid. My question? I appear to be losing 5- 10 litres of water a day out of the sump. Do you think this would be atributable to the condensation. I have checked all my pipes and the main tank and cannot find any sign of leaking to account for this loss. The sump tank is now a plastic tank as the glass tanks kept breaking (3 tanks in 4 days). Any urgent thoughts would be apreciated as I am quickly running out of my limited amount of hair.
  22. Cant add anything to what has been said but to let you know you have our sympathy from Taranaki. Like all of us who have been through this sort of thing time and fish heal all.
  23. Thats not silt, its oil and gas which we supply to keep you Jaffas going
  24. went to my local glass man and they quoted $140 per piece for toughened glass. Said each piece had to be hand made because of the small size.
