  1. they are not that timid from what i have seen, they are not aggresive feeders, but will defend their cave rather well! let us know how you go! plecs
  2. they are great fish, and are peacful although will claim their own space and defend it. they need somewhere to hide. They can be kept on their own, but imagine how great a school would look! make sure they are eating ok, as they can get skinny easily. will have to try the ball of foil! that would be fun to watch plecs
  3. lots of new tanks have algae problems until the whole thing settles. I would use Algae Fix (much better that algae rid). but again, make sure you dont overdose! Same with Accu Clear, it works well, so why look at a cloudy tank, just underdose instead of over! I have the same problem with feeding my fish, I am sure that the slower ones get nothing, however, they are still alive and well and would surely of starved to death by now if this they werent getting food. and fish are greedy, if you fed them a couple of hours after the morning feed they would appear to be starving all over again! they are just trying to trick you into feeding them more! You might find that you are better off using different bulbs, and may find that the fish look better, and the plants grow quicker. ask your lfs. and get more algae eaters! natural way of dealing with the problem, which is always the best way to go! good luck plecs
  4. it sounds to me that the fish might have been burned. accu clear is a great product, but if you put too much in it will burn the fish, leaving white areas on the fish. If i ever use Accu Clear in a tank i always underdose. I also find Algae Fix is by far the best anti algae treatment, but again never ever overdose with it as it too will burn the fish. I have my lights on my tanks for the same time as you do, and have very little algae problems, and never use any algae treatments. Why dont you get some borneo suckers of bristlnoses to eat the algae and save you the hassle? I use both aqua plus and cycle, and have had problems when i have forgotton to add them! good luck plecs
  5. oooh, say hi to England from me! NZ is a great place to live! much better over here. not sure what the difference is fish wise really, as didnt keep fish when i lived there. welcome and enjoy! might get to meet you too if you do make the big move! plecs

  11. MA, take it back to Animates and ask them to try it out on their plant tank, then you will see how to get it going and whether there is a problem with it. there shouldnt be this sort of problem. Take it back and make them help you! poor thing, what a pain! they are great filters once working though! good luck plecs
  12. hi guppy..... i feed my plecos: nutrafin complete bottom feeder tablets nutrafin algae discs JBL pleco chips carrot zuchine (sp??) frozen discus tucker they like meat, and need it. i use discus tucker as it has garlic, good for parasites. lfs should have it. they like to clean up bloodworms too. i have gold nugget chocolate zebra pleco snowball pleco royal pleco and a golden ansistrus. love my plecos! plecs
  13. your tank will be great!!! The golden red eyed pleco is a lovely plec, one i have been tempted with myself! They seem to be true albinos, whereas what is commonly called the albino pleco does have pigmentation so isnt truely an albino! seems kind of crazy to me! let us know how the new one goes. funny you bought another one  but i can understand it! plecs
  14. give him time! I have four plecos in my tank and they all vary the amount they come out. One i never see unless i am in the tank (not literally) doing water changes! my gold nugget would rank second in coming out the most. Give him time to settle, as long as he is eating then dont worry too much! what i have done is make caves and places they can hide but i can still see them! try that. they are my favourite plecos, so enjoy! and try not to worry :-? plecs

  19. Let us know how you find the shop! I bought fish back from Auckland in a poly bin, no problems. especially with the weather the way it is! as said take newspaper. I am sure they will be fine. some pet shops might give you a bin, otherwise i saw some for sale in Plastic Plus or one of those shops. have fun and let us know plecs
  20. haha staplez, not really what i had in mind! i do have an air pump in the tank. i have a galah inside ira, and galahs, ringnecks, sun conures, princess parots and a few others outside. know about the teflon, am really careful about what i use in the house. anyone have any other ideas? thanks plecs
  21. I hate this time of year when the flies invade, and have decided it is time to invest in one of those automatic sprays that kill insects. It would be in the kitchen, which isnt near the fish tank, but isnt far either and the doors between are never shut. I also have a bird that i am worried about. had a look at Mitre 10 today and some say remove birds and fish from area, and others dont. does anyone know if any are ok for birds and fish??? or how far it can be from the fish without causing a problem? or should i just put up with the flies????!!!! help please as they are driving me mental!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! plecs
  22. nor sure of cause. get some melafix, it is an antibacterial and good wound healer. see if that works. as for the snails, squish them while they are small and the fish will eat them  plecs
  23. i liked pupuke both Hollywoods, they each have different fish so found it worth going to both. for the type of fish i like i preferred both Jansens over the brindge, Silverdale and North Shore. although both others have good fish departments, with some different fish. strangely price varies between the stores. there is a fish shop in Hamilton which is meant to be good too, but didnt get to go as closed sun/mon and there is tropical blues in Tirau on the way to Auckland. i have also heard Waterworld in Rotorue is good, paradise road, not been though hope that helps plecs
