  1. nice tanks! and those red line torpedo barbs (known as denisoni barbs here) are really really nice! if not a little expensive! ($50 per fish makes an expensive school!). plecs
  2. shame about your knife fish, i have one and he is great! Your glass cats also have no scales, so you will have to half dose all treatments if you want to keep them and you new knife happy (when you get him). Loaches also have no scales. hope this helps! and welcome to the site plecs
  3. if you have dark substrate then dont go for the peppered cory's! You will never see them! i made that mistake, and regret it! I have also got albino corys which are really active, and panda's and jullii. the later are fairly expensive compared to the others, the jullii's seem to be the least hardy. I say Albino every time! Or bronze on light gravel as they are active too. good luck and have fun! plecs
  4. i got some colloidal silver but have yet to use it as I have no idea how much etc! If you could give me some advice Carriej i would be really interested, PM me if you want! I like Melafix, but rarely use it. I do use Aqua Plus to remove metals in the water and Cycle to add the good bacteria. Dont know if i really need to use the cycle but it makes me feel better! And have a bottle of Malkon on hand for white spot or any other problems. And a master test kit, which has all the main water tests, dont use it as often as i should though! Oh, and spare filter wool, always keep some on hand. plecs
  5. hi all, thanks for the suggestions. ordered a dwarf hara hara, hope it goes ok! Peppermint and gold nugget plecs, oh and a golden red eyed pleco. some different syno's. and the rest were pretty standard fish. will get the fire eel next week! and hope there is more interesting stuff on the list than there was this week! thanks guys plecs
  6. thanks guys, he was starving when i fed him the bloodworms, and he didnt touch that! he has had a great feed today, lots of little fish, things with funny tails etc. He probably wont need more for a couple of days! will try the earthworms, if i am wriggling it on a string, what if he swallows the string too! he isnt that big, neon is a good size fish for him, the penguin tetra was a bit big! thanks again plecs
  7. sorry billaney, no mollies on the list! dont think i have seen them on the list for a couple of months. will keep and eye out and let you know though plecs
  8. shae it was the only one on the list. what does NTL mean? thanks plecs
  9. hi guys, for those that dont know i work in a pet shop. I am doing the fish order tomorrow and want to get some interesting fish in. I have looked at the order lists and wondered if anyone fancied giving their advice please! Fire Eel: concerned about what fish i could put this in with! american flagfish: a killi. does it have to live with other killi's? dwarf hara hara catfish: cant find anything on these guys. thats it, the rest i have found info on. If anyone has suggestions for fish i should keep and eye out for then that would be great! thanks guys, you rock plecs
  10. thanks Robbie, sorry to hear that! lets hope someone comes up with something! plecs
  11. Hi, have a borneo tiger that is getting a bit slim and needs plumping up. have been feeding him neons, but this isnt really a great solution! he doesnt seem to like bloodworms. Has anyone got any suggestions? have most frozen food available, but no live food (other than other fish!). thanks for your help (in advance) plecs
  12. the rainbows are great fish! really nice to look at. the red ones are less hardy than the others though. they can get a good size and add some great colour! I have some neon dwarf rainbows, really liked them, had 6 and then over two days they all died. the water was fine, and could find no reason for it. didnt loose any other fish at that time, so not sure what was going on. also love the cherry barbs, really peacful and the males red gets quite deep, small but pretty fish. hope this helps plecs

    corydoras

hi Funkytown didnt actually get them! friend bought home a royal pleco instead! Am going up to Auckland in a couple of weeks and will get some then, as there are none available round here. will let you know then! plecs
  14. me too! how big will they be?> would like a pair. oooh, exciting, let us know! plecs
  15. turn your heater up to 30C, that will force it to leave the bodies making it easier to kill. Just half dose the malkon, better to under than over dose with loaches. even if it takes longer. But make sure you turn the heat up! plecs

    Brown Algae

thanks caryl! looked it up and found this: My aunt and I have both had the Otocinclus affinis in our tanks. In both our cases, this catfish when larger has attached itself to the bodies of its tankmates. That in turn killed them. I don't know if this is a normal trait for these fish or not... thye also dont eat red algae and blue-green algae apparently. Want one, never seen them anywhere though, although slightly concerned about the above quote! plecs

    Brown Algae

what is an oto???? thanks plecs
  18. if you want a good algae eater that doesnt get too big you could get a couple of borneo sucker fish, these are one of my favourite's. Thye look very cool and spend their time cleaning the glass, ornaments and plants, without damaging them. i have four in my four foot and never clean the glass. they grow to about 5cm, are really peaceful with anything and do need a well filtered tank, but that is ok with your one. also agree that bottom feeders are a great idea! If you got dark substrate go for lighter colour ones, like the albino or more expensive panda and jullii, if you have light substrate go for the bronze or peppered. the albinos and bronze are the most active, although the jullii's are great to watch swim. Kuhli loaches can be rather elusive! I have four somewhere, occationally see one or two! they come out at night, and occationally for a feed on an algae disc. they are cool, and i have never had one stuck in my filter. The more you get the more they come out apparently, but i dont feel inclined to spend more money on them in case i never seem them! and as said above, dont get a shark, they are really active and grow quite fast, think one would be miserable in your size tank. sorry. good luck! and i have little doubt you will be expanding and getting a bigger tank soon, one that you can fill with the big fish you want! plecs

    Driftwood.

you can get a little bag that you put into the filter and it removes the tannin from the water, clears it up really well. can't remember what it is called though! can find out, but a pet shop should know. would be far easier than boiling it and soaking it for months! plecs

    eyeless peppered

ira, i would think they would bulge quite well before they popped out! vecause of the pepper colouration the eyes look like a pepper spot, so it isnt very obvious unless you look quite close. I regulaly check my fish and am sure that i would have noticed buldging eyes. Unless it happened very quickly one day while i was at work. who knows though, maybe i am a slack fish keeper.

    eyeless peppered

i had thought of pop eye, or something simular, but would have noticed the buldging eye. Is funny though that he has no eyes and none of my others have even one eye missing. Is there anything it could have been that wouldnt have been so obvious to see happening?? thanks again guys, good to know you are all here to ask these things too! plecs

    eyeless peppered

thanks guys, thought he would be ok, just wanted to check others agreed. poor thing eh! hope the eye eater doesnt get a taste for it and do it to the others! think it was either the black ghost knife fish or the rainbow shark. thanks guys plecs

    L shaped tank

hi Jude I thought it looks great! Can see why you dont want fish that will upset the plants though! How long has it been since you put the plants in, as they look really well established. Great tank! well done! plecs

    eyeless peppered

one of my pepper corydoras has no eyes! Assume one of my more aggressive fish took a liking to them. They are healed over so must have been some time ago, and i guess i am naughty for not noticing. Do you think he will be ok? he is swimming round ok, and as it is healed i assume he will be ok, as long as he can find food. anyone got any experience on this?? thanks, plecs
