  1. I will write that down! totally agree. why not - what does over filtering do but good things. this way, if i swim in the tank and treat it as a pool... and pee in it, its ok! see! the effectiveness of K1 - unsure, people swear by it but when i had it running in my inlaws, it didnt brown like it is supposed to, i am assuming that there was not enough waste to substantiate extremely dense and heavy bacterial growth, but thats ok, spreading the bacteria through out the media is a good thing anyways.
  2. The time is nearing. 16th may, i commence to fill over 3 days. i have set up the bio media, sump configuration, ready to 'plug and play' :slfg: The sump is what i had before, (from left to right) socks are lowered to make room for the manifold to distribute water onto the socks. there are 4 chambers. 1) chamber under socks - ceramic bio media, high flow chamber with noodles 2) chamber after socks - 50Litres K1 media, will be a moving media chamber, High Flow 3) Return PUmp Chamber - 3x pump (1x for main tank, 1x for 600L grow out, 1x recirculating pump for trickle tower) 4) Trickle tower - this is the one sitting on top of the middle section. THis has bio balls, ceramic noodles and assorted media such as JBL, Eheim, aqua one Media The amount of bio media is way way overkill for the proposed stocking, but i figured that more is better as always. also, it future proofs it IN CASE - one day i build another big ish tank for a gold Crossback arowana, can just plug and play, Sump can handle another 1000L tank. the media too, allows bacteria to Lightly populate the media and spread itself out more over the whole sump set up.
  3. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... ermanent=0 that picture is not of actualy fish is it? if so, then awesome. thoughts on this ?
  4. yeah, i still have 2. slow growers, but steady growers. they get to 45cms eventually. i th ink it will get there, these cats are long lived. want big cats. not many around. rarest i have had is an arrowhead puffer.
  5. yeah, FH is one of those things that is hard to pin point as the blood is so mixed. but i dont think we have much in NZ. shame though, they are awesome. the last batch was awesome too. i reckon they should import more, i believe they sold relatively quickly. pictures would be nice.
  6. I agree, a dehumidifier in a room will heat it to a 26 yto 28c. and avoid moisture. IF you seal the tank as much as psosible, moisture isnt an issue, then iw ould just use a heater for the tank. the efficiency differences in a room, fullyinsulated will be minimal i think
  7. yeah, almost all of t hem are around. scarlet, not sure, apparently some came in ages ago, ig ot one but unfortunately disappeared.... (as in, dead or eaten)
  8. There are heaps of holes in the return line. Above the water level so wont use my non return valve for max flow
  9. yean, will try to block as much as possible. the way i see it, coming from a tin totally uninsulated fridge to a 99% insulated garge, heat loss will be minimal from now.
  10. ohok. yeah will address that. plenty of time to do so i suppose.
  11. sory dont nkow wha tyou mean gap. but the door itself goes up and are in panels. quite big panels. lucky cos then i can insulate them with ply. otherwise i cant. the gaps around the door, i will eventually put this bristly stuff on people put around smoke stop doors, dont know the name but seen itin mitre 10. the ceiling and the side walls are heavily insulated now, so should keep heat in heaps. after i clean up and finish garage, i will insulate the doors. before tank is filled, doors should be insulated.
  12. Yeah, went for black silicone. looks very tidy. as if borders on the edges! looks very nice. as for the picture of karin in the tank. will do that when fully cured before fill:D
  13. yeah, the last corner of the garage sitll needs to be sealed and insulated, doing that this thurs. then clean up. arrange garage, and wait to cure the silicone. i have also modifed sum, will post pics of that when i have placed in position i have retrofitted a secondary sump from warren a while back to sit on my current sump for a wet dry bio trickle media, at the bottom will be a 40 to 50 litre K1 Media moving media filter. the bio media will have a recirculating type set up. alsothe sump is all 'fully sealed' as mentioned so avoid smells and to avoid evaporation as much as possible. the overflows/filter box on corners are tinted glass. the bottom of the tank is all clear, sides too. but on top of the poly, i have a thin black cloth so i dont have to pain the bottom and its black, that gives a tint tot he look of the tank. when lights are on, wont notice it with substrate. all the plumbing as much as possible are drilled onto the sump, and the inlets are on the bracing at the back. will post pics when all fittings in, should be in the next 3 weeks (as i have that much time for it to cure ) The lids have no corners cut out, no wires that will come out, nothing in the tank but the tank. as for the feeding hole, greg cut a hole on the lid, the piece that came out is on a rectangular piece of glass, that is like alid i will put 'functionality' pics when everything is done, just in case anyone wants to pick up any single idea from the build. nervous with filling it, cos of the size. i keep checking the seals to make sure they are all not coming off with the natural action of gravity and stuff. seems to have settled now, so when fully cured should be very strong. bracing on the ends are 40cm pieces of glass. middle is 15cm. Accross the length on both sides are 9cm lengths. i will eventually spray paint the sides, back. i will do that when the tank is filled and has not exploded or leaked. Dont wanna waste money on spray paint incase it doesnt hold:D
  14. Will post. Weird. Took many but didn't take a finished one lol Yeah.. Greg definitely learnt a lot in this. Mainly, have lots of g clamps! Yeah going with the sponge in corner.
  15. Tank BUild Day! Greg Arriving to finish Ally07 walking on the glass to compress the silicon between the 2 sheets (double sheets for braceless look
  16. It is easy enough to just let them establish naturally i find.
  17. Tank stand positioned, levelled and feet are locked in. garage is ready for tank build, only one corner left to do, no more wool , all poly from here as i cant get into the space anymore with wool. so if anyone wants super cheap insulation wool. Let me know, i have enough for about 8.5 sqm. Its R3.5. Here is the pic of the final position Outside in My wife is 5'11 - size comparison
  18. There you go. Prob a play. I have never seen one that red in all my time i was in asia.... Could be fake
