  1. cost is only a side effect to an obsession:D
  2. Yeah i will admit it.. Watching it gives me a kick lol
  3. Just went to look! Very nice.. Eating nicely too.
  4. Yeah the noodles are getting huge amounts of flow. The water comes from under and drains from top another end. Can see water pushing through the noodles if you remove lid. K1 looks cool.... I believe the k1 was more for me than tank needs lol
  5. Ron, im sure you guys (the three musketeers) will pool your expertness (i made up that word just now) and get these guys to breed:D
  6. ill keep that in mind, ill edit the film first and blur out bits:D
  7. suppsedly, they look very different if bred in captivity. perhaps is a wild diet or environs affecting the fish itself. who knows, but apparently they end up looking qutie different. still looks cool though!
  8. It is a shame that the offspring from wild caught discus look different to wild discus! but at least its still wild, i would assume that a more diverse genetic pool would mean stronger fish perhaps?
  9. I will come look, is it in there right now?
  10. THey look awesome. would love to see them in a show tank!
  11. http://evolutionaqua.com/acatalog/Kaldnes_K1_Media.html the site i just saw it on a website a while ago, apparently the use it for sewerage but to be honest, i dont think i really needed it, i kinda got some buyers remorse:D being completley up front, realising that my current media set up, well, its over kill as it is. but, there was something awesome having constantly moving media, looks so industrial... so i got it anyways:D when i set up new tank, i will re arrange the media in the compartments in this same sump to incorporate static AND moving media. so, in essense, i could probably relieve myself in the tank and its still ok:D :rolfl:
  12. trialling K1 media in my current confihguration, working pretty well in terms of movement but will re arange my sump later on. looks cool, i just like the look of moving media, its more interesting than boring old static media lol
  13. spoken to the importer prior to them arriving. the company catches them from the wild and keeps them in holding tanks until they eat prepared foods, then ship them out. i dont believe they will be harder, i actually think they will be hardier perhaps? not inbred at all.
  14. Haha, if i loved discus enough, i would get them asap! would be awesome though in a amazonian styled dedicated tank!
  15. http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/f ... 003365.htm true wild discus for those who have been waiting

    Pumps...

via aqua are beter in power consumption. i use them as my cheapos, they serve very well, i have one that is 5 years old, and still going! albeit will need new impeller, but 5 years is good! sun sun are very power hungry. almost double the power requirement compared to via aqua, i would go via aqua
  17. It could, i wouldnt do poret, has to be something that will not block. danger is bio ball may block the hole on the overflow drain. but i am considering something similar, just to break the speed of water and divert it a little.
  18. My return pump will be same as my 1200 litres. It served me well, i am increasing bio media efficiency so the return pump will be mainly for bio filtration. the side of the filter, iw ill have a inbuilt filter box for mech filtration. that will have the big turnover relative to the tank size. in the 1200, i had 25mm and usually was on fu ll siphon and the water level was never more than 10cm above the hole i found. only issue is now, i am trying to find a way to avoid the water fall effect.
  19. i always have used a comb to stop bits of food going down into the overflow. but realisig that combs are expensive, i may not do it this time. i am looking at a rectangular shaped overflow so it has slightly more surface to drain than a triangular straight line. any ideas on how to make it so food wont go over. my thoughts 1) just do it with no comb but another bit of glass restricting it so fish dont go over. maybe 1cm straight gap? 2) mesh, like a plastic garden type mesh or i was thinking just making sure that i feed just enough so food doesnt get over the overflow. OR maybe using more sinking cichlid foods and limited floating foods.
  20. yes, there are some vendors who will sit and count mealworms... seriusly though, pathetic to be honest. you can easily use a shotglass (i used to do it) and average out the amount of mealies inside and just school. as a supplier, you will always give more than less when it comes to insects though. i did anyways. to have 30,000 mealies a week to supply, it has to be a vast operation. right now i am breeding for personal use and getting the hang of mass quantity breeding with artificial heating... i am getting there. but i was reading an article online on 'how to have 150k mealworms at any given time' type of article. and using their method. too many beetles, not enough mealies, too little, too space wasted. not enough beetles - moisture gets to your bran and gets could get mites. beetles love eating the mites. mealworms too IF there is enough of them. there is a balance you have to go through to breed them en masse. locusts too, breeding thousands of locust to supply to zoos, clubs, doc etc and able to deliver weekly - all i can say is... think huge area and very efficient set ups:D
  21. we are around, I love plecos but i really do love the large mouthed catfish, dont know the technical terms. sun cats rae nice. like those type of whiskered cats! shame we dont have many
  22. Hi All, just wonde3ring if anyone here has connections that may be able to get these cheaper than retail? Thanks
  23. My tank build is going to be as 'sealed' as possible. lids for sump, tank are all gonna be almost 'holeless' and totally diverting as much of the evaporation and smell as possible back into the tank. So no corner holes, i want to have 'handles' on the lids so ic an remove them. Will araldise stick strongly on the glass. I am just thinking of getting drawer metal handle things from hardware stores. and sticking them on the lids. The araldise will not be used for anything else, just the lid handles.
  24. sntered glass noodles are inert. so they wont provide any change in water parameters. if marine, i would recommend using coral bits. they are actually similar in price if not the same. the coral bits from hollywood will provide your marine tank wtih the minerals and goodies that it should get. sintered glass are for freshwater. it will provide bacteria housing but only that.
