  1. usually iw ould feed prawns. but ig ot a fire eel that is a huge pig and eats pellets. Hikari massivore and Jumbo sticks is its primary diet. occasional shrimp but i wanna see hwo quickly i can get this fire eel to a monstrous size with a pure hikari diet:D disclaimer: I am not sponsored by hikari in any way...(but if pet ware wants to sponsor me for constantly pushing their product, i would love to accept)
  2. yeah, retrospect - probably not a good idea:D :sml1:
  3. eyah i guess if i need a big tank then wouldnt be worth it. just exploring options.
  4. no, i wont put the duckweed in the tank. i will put it in a separate compartment linked to the sump. in theory, water comes from sump into the reactor and back at the sump to mix with the rest of the water. I figure it should work, iw otn have it in the tank itself, its messy do you think hat wills ufficiently absorb the bad stuff and can just cull and remove the duckweed when 'duckweed sump' is overrrun
  5. They remove phosphates and nitrogen very effectively.... i read.
  6. Ok, thats out of the question then:D posted a duckweed idea:D i guess im in a drive to be more sustainable and economical
  7. I am in a massive driev to reduce water and power cost in my set ups. i am wondering, how viable is a duckweed reactor? what is a negative bi product of duckweek absorbing nitrate? i mean i know algae product unwanted stuff in itself, but duckweed you just remove the duckweed when there is too much. i am thinking of just using a generic 20w fluro conpact energy saver in a duckweek reactor to reduce water chagnes dramatrically, who uses a ducweek reactor or seen one?
  8. So, instead of feeding and gutloading mealworms with Sweet potato raw, i should bake the kumara then feed it to mealworms? so fish can get more of the vits? i can dot hat its easy:D
  9. Reverse osmosis filters. I know peol use them for tap water to tank. can you run a reverse osmosis unit for the tank water itself? will it filter out nitrates? Amonia and Nitrite? was thinking running one in my tank, so just cleans the tank water. not even sure if its possible:D just bored at work and juggling ideas
  10. http://www.healthaliciousness.com/nutritionfacts/nutrition-facts-compare.php is this real? baking in skin increasing carotenes? Im thinking it is because the food is dryer and less moisture so the % concentration is greater in comparison to the weight of the food?
  11. dont know the name from mulan:D brutus seemed fitting, he is quite aggressive to anything that goes on the top third of the tank esepcially when he can smell any type of food. colours coming along nicely - spirulina seemed to be helping the blue hues on the scales and general tone has become darker towards a maroon. 70% of the scales now have a good orangy reddish rim on them. pics coming mid september.
  12. I do believe it is worn out, it was the cheapest multiboard .. 7 dollars haha. I belieev i may need to upgrade to a better one for a better margin the total wattage no wherenear 2300w.
  13. heaters are all very new relatively new. this happens when the multiboard is overlaoded right? i have seen this when i put in a oil heater in the house in a multiblard, doesnt like it and flicks. I loved the heaters around and thinned out so instead of 4x 300w jagers in one multi, i just have 2 now, may even spread it out even further to 2 on each multiblard. everything else is small in load.
  14. It dfoes nto happen often at all, but has happened twice in 3 years. Now its only a matter of time that this happens WHILE i am away. could be a nightmare. i know its an over load thing, so i moved my heaters to a different plug. but is there amultiplug out there that when switched off, will automatically flick back on after 1 or a couple hours? if so roughly how much?
  15. Needing a new sump. this sump will eventually support a system 3000 litres (2 tanks) the sump cannot be wider than 80cm and cannot be longer than 6 foot. and max heigh of 40 cm OR alternatively, max L 1m, Max W 80cm, max H 65 any ideas? any designs that people have used?
  16. dont look at teh shipping, look at the total price of the rpoduct including shipping. you will find its still cheaper in most cases. with hikari products and fish food its definitely the case. even with shipping - massivore is still about half price to what it is here! shipping is inevitable, but i just bought some mag float - cost me 36 dollars when it costs more than double that here, that includes shipping.
  17. Ebay is good. if you are buying a large quantity - i would suggest http://www.thatpetplace.com i have used them 5 times already, but they have a minimumorder for international shipping. ebay all around is good though.
  18. that pondmaster pond filter is only the CANISTER portion. you still need to buy a submersible or inline pump (whcih has to be verypoweful0 to pump water into that canister. that is designed for ponds - in theory it can be a giant canister but by the time you factor in the cost of that and a separate pump whcih you need and the power consumption of a pump, you are better off getting an fx5. FX5 is amazing, 1 will do your tank, your stocking is light - it will be more than sufficient. a sump would be good too, maybe a small canister and a sump or a sump with a good turn over submersible pump. you have to consider what pump you buy for your return pump. cheap ones have very veyr high power use, so spending the money now for a efficient submersible pump will be more cost effective and you get return on investment generally after 8 to 12 months! (work it out, it stacks up) sun sun pumps are 150 to 250watts. eheim, via aqua, laguna is half that if not less! mroe efficient. anyways, i would actually go for a canister if its not heavily stocked. you get better clarity of water with an fx5
  19. Spirulina has one of the widest carotene range there is thats easily obtainable, so getting spirulina powder into the diet is key in this case. beta carotene levels plus some are incredibly high in spirulina. so gutloading goldfish and mealworms weith them even crickets is awesome:D unfortunately, most fish foods have limited amounts of spirulina soi just use powder now. flamingos eat blue green algae - which is similar to spirulina as far as i can see. astaxanthin is put into fish pellets as a supplement - but you can actually buy astaxanthin in soft gell caps too!
  20. well, colour for a red arowana is mainly genetics but we give it all the help we can with good food and food with high colouring properties. just like the flamingo for example, would be white except for its diet. just want to make it red as possible.
  21. going by that guide http://www.healthaliciousness.com/nutritionfacts/nutrition-facts-compare.php pepper, caps - paprika would be a good source. i have fed paprika to many fish before especially discus. Paprika (peppers) has a massive amount of red colourant (obviosuly its bright red) i think im going to have to try getting paprika into the arowana diet...
  22. didnt even think of capsicums - wonder how mealworms would eat capsicums and how it would be gutloading them for an arowana to eat. was comparing veges like kumara, potato, pumpkin thats easy to feed to mealies. plecos i assume eat caps and are ok with it? i find leafy veges hard to keep in the fridge for long and there isnt much mass to feed the mealworms with.
  23. if anyone here actually has had a ghost knife at 60cm, i will congratulate you and possibly buy it:D its very hard to get BGK to 60cms from what i have seen. but yes, they get large generally, even at 35 to 40cm, thats still large
  24. intersting. Out of all veges here in nz, Orange Kumara has the highest Beta carotene levels - 25% more than carrots approx. and Spirulina powder has 400% gram to gram vs all veges more beta carotene. just a thought when gutloading mealworms, crickets:)
