  1. i have a plan. i remember feeding my silvers them ages ago but want to be sure, so got a plan:D
  2. yeah, it is something i can never explain.............. no one would understand, none the less, i have been given lots to think bout.
  3. i have just read that Aboriginies used to eat them....
  4. fraser, you tried feeding them to fish? or have you studied them? in term sof knowing if they are poisonous?
  5. I guess the thing is, frogs are quite good for them. but yes, i can feed something else. but just wondering, are they actually poisonous?
  6. haha ok thanks. so same sized ones are less likely to eat each other
  7. ok, i know they eat each other, anyways of avoiding this? how fast do frogs grow?
  8. can you try feding it a small green frog and let me know if it is ok after a few days? i have tried feeding my silver green frogs ages ago, it loved it and it was ok - wonder if feeding red arowana is ok too.
  9. Ok, despite what your personal beliefs on feeding frogs to arowana, i know what it is, i just want to ask anyone here since i last asked, who has fed common green frogs to arowanas, silver, jardinii.. what ever. PM ME with your reply. just want to know how they fared, any adverse effects. THings like that. i understand that this is not ideal for everyone, so reply with feedback through PM if you are not comfortable doing it here. Thanks
  10. i find a good tree to work with is Manuka Tree, the branches sink quickly, tannins are harmless and they look good, natural look.
  11. yeah just thinking bout it, i think ill stick to a plec. something unusual and nice, not too monstrous.
  12. i would put it in a good sized tank, awesome filters... good water change regime and feed it prawns, small ones very cheap from pak n save. IF you want to feed bigger prawn, you can stuff the big prawns with massivore or hikari sticks - adds a protein punch to it, it will spurt in growth
  13. coolios, ill chuck the media in there for ya just take the lot.
  14. looking good! hope they settled in well:) come pick up filter at some stage and get it goin, got spare bio media? if so ill take mine and just give filter, if not then ill chuck them in for ya i can always use more bio media
  15. some say 13 cm, some say 15, some say 30 cm what is the max size?
  16. lifepsan depends on care and diet and the fish. i find that most pepole say that age because the fish die before it reaches an old age. example, in asia, most say that arowanas live for 8 to 10 years. but some breeders have commonly said they have arowanas that are 25 years old, some 16, some say average 19 yrs old. then upon further investigation, i find out that most fish in asia die around this age of 8 to 10 or less, maybve 5 to 6 because the tank is always under filtered (it is the asian way) to under filter and under house a large fish... god knows why... silly really. so the constant amonia spike after feeding etc, exposure to bad water, small tank.... could shorten the life, so when cared for properly like in a pond or giant tank - these fish can live long, i think it would be the same with Fire eels and TT eels and most fish. The larger the fish and large potential the longer it lives generally.
  17. yeah, quite common in asia, pig nose turtles with arowanas, they are fully aquatic turtles. i have seen it done here with snake neck, aw hile back, hff roskill had a snake neck with clown knives and a few other fish, didnt attack any of the fish at all. awesome!
  18. problem is when the time comes to take out the sock and clean it, it will dislodge all the dirt in the water.
  19. i agree with you completely, i surely hope that is the cause man... i tell ya, i have not had this sort of mass death since ages ago when i first started getting heavily into the hobby - growing pains, embarassing really!! IME too, that IAL tend to take ages, last time i used them, it took literally a week before the wa ter started to brown! this one, straight away. i bought it from the same person i got it from last time, i have 40 leaves left, i will not use it and discard it. dont wanna take that risk again! if its not the cause, then i am stumped! but the patter of use vs the symptoms starting coincides - that is the only thing different i did in the tank!! i will not feed anymore today or tomorrow and test ph twice daily. i turned up the water changer slightly to get the ph back to normal and have it stable. no other fish has suffered any ill health at all what so ever - arowana is very active and hungry, spotted metynis are fine, plecos are fine, eel etc but what i did see, is the parrot scratching itself a few times this morning before i took out the IAL. maybe coinsidence. but who knows. i lost 2 large ones at least worth 250 to 200 each today, and 10 smallish and medium clowns in the past coupel weeks!! half of whcih are oddballs - 2x 4 stripes, couple with weird patterns and 2 spotted clowns :tears: i believe i may lose some sleep tonight
  20. I have eliminated little things. I have checked corners for rotting carcasses i missed, Negative. what i have found that the IAL usually takes 4 to 6 days to start to brown the water, These ones started to leech tannins with in 2 to 3 hours. i checked the PH - usually my tank sits at around 7 or very high 6. Basically 7 ph, my tap water is 7.6 to 7.8 Ph. i tested and it was beyond 6, probably a lil lower than 6. I belive that it is PH shock, over night the PH must have dropped significantly and shocked them Looking at the patterns of death, it started when i introduced IAL 2 weeks ago. i have taken out all IAL and upped my water cahnges over 24 hours to restore the balance. i feel annoyed at myself becaues the IAL was unneccesary, i wanted it really for the brown in the water - as a result, lost 2 large clowns and about 10 smaller to medium clowns in 2 weeks!! :tears:
  21. Also note that they are kinda of like confulsing and cant swim properly and what i noticed is that they cant seem to control their eye spike... tne eye spine just keep flickering in and out, sticking in and out... they cant hold it in. weird i have NEVER seen this before.
  22. weird, in my 2 tanks, in the past 10 days i have had m ysterious clown loach death, i find them on their side, unable to stay upright - eventually leading to death. water params are perfect - nitrate low, in the 10ppm mark or less. no other fish suffers from this, at first i thought my small ornates in one tank is attacking them, then my other tank started to suffer ... so far 1 large one and 1 medium on started to show symptoms. in the other tank , 8 in the last 10 or so days have died the same exact way. i have no clue to what it is, i introduced IAL in the tank 2 weeks ago, i have take this out and will stop to retore the usual parameters. any ideas? can a large ornate bite and leave no visible marks and only internal damage? all my bichirs are going anyways, and the 2 large ornates, but just wondering what this could be. ..... a bit anxious! never really had mass death like this ever before and like i said, no other fish is affected or dying except for the clowns.
