my version of the freshwater reef is heavily planted amano style tanks. what is the key, im just curious. http://www.amanotakashi.net/portfolio/nature_aquarium/images/019.jpg http://www.amanotakashi.net/portfolio/nature_aquarium/images/002.jpg something like this. what is the key? lights and ferts? co2? i figured from my last attempt, potted plants definitely isnt gonna work long term. also i couldnt use ferts as i had too much water change going on. and too much aeration too i assume. so my next attempt i am thinking of a closed system no sump, small filtration .... extremely low stocking to non even to begin with and really a tank o nly for aquascaping. what type of plants grow onto the wood like that? xmas moss ? http://www.google.co.nz/imgres?q=amano&um=1&hl=en&safe=active&sa=N&biw=1680&bih=859&tbm=isch&tbnid=bYscXce6v7YI2M:&imgrefurl=http://www.myfishtank.net/mft-news/takashi-amano-planted-tanks/&docid=ctqtyR1owIMD-M&w=600&h=268&ei=RNp6TvDZK6SDmQWBtcmzAQ&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=146&page=1&tbnh=89&tbnw=199&start=0&ndsp=28&ved=1t:429,r:5,s:0&tx=126&ty=24 http://www.google.co.nz/imgres?q=amano&um=1&hl=en&safe=active&sa=N&tbm=isch&tbnid=DK0rtiDnkMKWPM:&imgrefurl=http://www.keywordpicture.com/keyword/takashi%2520amano%2520wallpaper/&docid=EMiGYSBbv3wIjM&w=550&h=275&ei=RNp6TvDZK6SDmQWBtcmzAQ&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=149&page=4&tbnh=100&tbnw=199&start=99&ndsp=39&ved=1t:429,r:7,s:99&tx=8&ty=63&biw=1680&bih=859

no, havent been there ages but google has heaps, arofanatics.com will advise too. but all petshops there are good haha you go t the smallest shop guaranteed it will have more stock than here:D
-
i have tried asking for large ones. problem is that they are actually not tha good to ship, they go through a lot of stress. if you try importing 1 large one vs 20 small ones, you are likely to lose that 1 big one mroe so than the smaller ones. so the risk is way too high. in singapore, you can buy endless huge ones for 150 singapore dollars, that is considered premium!
-
yeah, there is large you get in pet shops and LARGE you get from private collections. you can pay 120 to 150 for a 'large' petshops clown. sometimes you get lucky and they are truly l arge, but otehrwise, you gotta pay a premium, also, from a massive group of clowns, you will NEVER get all of them large. i had 86 clowns at one stage and only saw good growth on 10 to 15. the rest will never grow to a good size, stunted, hormonal, who knows.
-
of course:D fed in the morning and waited for water to clear then took pics:D haha how did you guess?
-
haha, y eah, trying! still early days. will start tanning soon. will take one more pre tanning pics in couple months, and hopefully put on more size and then will start tanning for a good 3 to 4 months and take pics again, under white light and tanning lights. see how it goes. the third set of pics, the colour hasnt change much its more so the orange has spread through more of the scales and more scales have started to turn orange, the cheeks are definitely spreading more.

IN this thread, i have also added pictures of the arowana under a red tanning light and arcadia tanning light. Last update, the aro was about 35cm, measured today it is 39 to 40cms. Red aro pictures. May 2011, Jul 2011, sep 2011 Other side Comparison in order of apperance: 18 sep 2011 Normal light, Chinese made tanning light, ARcadia tanning light. Please note that the red has not had any tanning at all, i just placed the tanning lights out of curiosity of seeing the difference, tanning will commence End of this year or early next year. other side:

thats easily solved. then get a scarlet pleco:D oh ok sorry i missed the point.... :dunno: those king tigers and stuff are nice. very stripey:D
-
I have never seen this happen, i think if the plecos are well fed or flagtail is well fed (mine are certainly well fed) then i dont see this. they dont rasp to harass, they rasp to eat, (of course the flag tail can pick on things that it believes is a similar species like tinfoil barbs brrr) but generally, theydont bother them. i think that these situations occur when feeding is 'regulated' - then the fish' appetite is not satisfied, it keeps grazing perhaps. birchirs can surprisingly be quite hungry and try to eat anything that swims past it, i have seen my small ornates go for clowns that swim past them, so easy solution - feed them heaps:D
-
bichirs dont eat them, theyd ont like the garlic and courgette. discus love them!
-
I have some beef heart mix intended for discuss and clown loaches - i am no longer gonna use them youa re welcome to them if you want. they are good! mix of fish, beef, prawns, spirulina, massivore, hikari sticks, courgette, spinach frozen into rolls, air tight rolls, if you want them let me know pm or email me, can pick it up, i was just gonna throw out, i dont use them anymore.

-
wow, that is VERY blue!! mmmmmmmm..... now tempted to get one:D start growing it for my one day Treasure chest themed Xb tank lol
-
not all para seem to have it, glenfield doesnt, but mt roskill by hff have it. very good, i used them, before use i soaked it in boiling water but works well, i hae been using it for a year now, doesnt perish, doesnt permenently clog, good for rough mech filtration
-
that would depend on the temp of water and ambient temp. But i know this Jager heaters: i kow that they turn on ever 10 mins or so, and if your temp is fine they will turn off, almost like a check. Also they turn on of course if there is a sudden change in temp. This is what i tried to utilize wtih my water changer. The checks produce good amount of heat and by adding water slowly i found i saved power rather than big water changes.

probably cheaper to replace the pipes with black ones?

Some questions: What is the ACTUAL readings of the water params. Seems like you had a spike that killed off some fish and some fish that were stronger survived. Also what is the diet of the eel? the eel eating clown loaches can kill it, but generally, i think that its the water. cleaning out filters and changing water when you see sick fish is most of the time too late, prevention and maintaining good water is key. its like a human eating and living in bad conditions, then suddenly you give it good food, at times - they just give up. give us the water parameters in the actual measurements when you tested it before water chagnes. also give us 1) litres and size of tank 2) filter you use - and media used in filer 3) water measurements 4) temperature 5) your water change regime wghen you change water TOO much you can actyually make it worse from the shock, small water changes frequently is better. so maybe instead of 20% daily in one go, do 2x 10% twice a day, or even 3x 10% in one day.
-
why would you get another arowana, you already have one you are trying to sell. just grow that one up. remember, the dynamics from one fish to another is 100% different, it may not work like it did before.
-
Funny that I find that too, when my partner is standing there, the aro doesnt seem as interested - i dont nkow what it is but it seems that it does SORT OF recognise the owner who feeds it daily.
-
instinctively, the rtg will go for the corys, but if you intro them and distract the rtg so they can hide, it should be ok, i think in time the rtg will find the cory too annoying to try and catch, similar to clown loaches. rtg is also a paticularly docile specimen so i reckon give it a try. make sure there are already hiding spots
-
that rtg is a very docile spcimen. it was housed with many many fish and has gotten use dto them, still keep an eye out. it will occasionally chase away any competitors. but seeing that it didnt kill your black aro immediately - maybe its much more docile than i anticipated:) sorry to hear bout black aro,
-
would be good from a young age to alternate a hikari product high on Spirulina like excell or excell biogold or something. so you can work on the pinks and blue hues. really interested how they turn out on a pellet diet! when bigger ill come over and sneak a mouse or two:D
-
looking good, good space at the top and mid, cichlids should help aro to compete for food .. cant wait for the others!
