  1. A good bit of kiwi ingenuity there Alan

    Blue rams

I think they are either strong or weak fish, i had a pair of blues and a pair of golds, one blue and one gold have died but the two left i've had for ages and are going strong.
  3. I like the "its easy" & "simply" bits. Not the sort of thing i would do to my fish, sounds painfull and a bit extreme, think i'll just go for the younger ones LOL Sends a shiver up my spine just thinking about surgery there
  4. Cool, thanks for that, might have to get a pair and make sure the male is young, i like the look of your other swords in the background, i haven't seen any like that before, i've got silver with green stripes but the red tail and fins looks awesome, been to Hollywood every weekend for the last 6 mths and never seen anything like them, might have to go for a tiki tour around Auck this weekend LOL
  5. Nice fish Billaney, i was thinking about getting a pair of lyretails similar colour from Hollywood fishfarm but had heard that because of the long finnage the males gonopodium is ummm... limp and as such they are unable to breed. Are they capable of spawning like normal swords? I know what you mean, got a tank with well over 100 guppies but saw one i liked and had to have it LOL
  6. I put my large net in where they are taking off to, leave it in for an hour or so then slowly put the small net in, they take off from the small net straight into the big net : -)>, 9 times out of 10 anyway

    Help !

That is quite a few fish, have you checked nitrate (if its been setup for a while) & ammonia, nitrite (if its a newish tank). Doing a 10% water change every couple of days for a week or so should tell you if its water conditions, if the shark is being chased a lot that could well be it, try putting the chaser in a breeding trap & see if that helps.
  8. I use the suction cup glass thermometers and they seem to work well, as for buying another tank, two or more would be the way to go as there is no such thing as to many, just not enough room. You could have some guppies, swordtails, platties or mollies are peacefull, there are a few types of loaches that are good in a community tank e.g. clown, striata, yo-yo, queen, zebra, (stay clear of burmese tiger loaches, they are agro) a couple of otocinclus/corys/ b/nose as a clean up crew. Thats just to name a few. Check out your LFS as there are bound to be some tropicals that take your fancy : -)>

    Help !

Makes a change, a red tailed shark being chased, they usually do the chasing LOL. Hanging around the surface is usually lack of oxygen... are any other fish coming to the surface for air? Have you checked ammonia, nitrite & nitrate? How many fish and what size is the tank?

    Eheim filters

There is a cheap 2213 (new) on trade me at the moment $159
  13. I agree, it is overstocked, who told you its not overstocked, wouldn't be the shop that sold you the fish would it? The pleco alone may grow to 50-60cm and will be to big for the 620. I have less fish in my AR850 and wouldn't add any more. If you are going to buy a 620t check out http://www.petplanet.co.nz as they have very reasonably priced AR850's that would be more suitable (not for a full grown pleco though)
  14. According to the Jebo websites dimensions it holds 30 ltrs, how big are the B/Nose and Kuhli loaches?
  15. Waiting for a K number for killifish as their specific names are some what like tongue twisters
  16. The L # is used to id a lot of Plecos and Ancistrus, if you go to http://www.planetcatfish.com or http://www.plecofanatics.com you will get an idea of how it is used.
  17. I've tried raw pumpkin but find it falls to bits (seems to be fibrous) and gets snagged on the back of the driftwood and clogs up the filter.
  18. Over a couple of days add some water from the new tank to the old tank, i would do a ltr or 2 three times a day depending on how many ltrs the old tank is, basically trying to bring the water temp, ph etc of the new tank as close as possible to that of the old tank so the betta is comfortable going from one tank to the other. The other fish shouldn't be a problem so good luck with the move : -)>

    Another Newbie

Hi Gretal, the secret is when you go to buy your fish ask your b/f to pick one for himself as i'm sure when he has a fish of his own he will be more enthused. Good luck converting to tropicals : -)>
  20. I had heard goldfish eating from the surface could have swimbladder problems, mine used to get flake and goldfish pellets (that floated) both on the surface and i never had a problem. My tropicals get flake on the surface and some swirled about 25mm underwater to ensure the smaller loaches get some. If your worried about it just place a pinch slightly under water and wiggle a finger to get it to disperse.
  21. How similar is the water in the two different tanks? You may need to acclimatise it slowly over a few days. Are the fins definetly rotting? What other fish are in the tank you are trying to introduce him to? Sounds like you are taking one out of the big tank and replacing it with this new one, is that correct?
  22. I havent been there yet, was talking to him Wed & Thurs night, he was telling me about the Red Severums, he has a customer that bought 10 Albino Ancistrus and is keen on 10 GBA so i'm taking 2 over tommorrow for his customer to have a look at. No doubt what ever i can make off them will be spent there....as you do LOL   Just need more room for more tanks...then all i'll need is more tanks.
  23. I clean my internal and external filters under tap water (Auckland water), filter wool, noodles, substrate etc and have never had a problem, no Ammonia, Nitrite etc, i could just be lucky but i'm still waiting to win lotto.

    Baby b/n

Ummm never really thought about it, it would be around 3-4 mths i think (Although it is after 5 Friday evening so brain has gone into weekend mode)
  25. Ummmmm, just happened i think, got about 200 swords and guppies in 1 tank, staqrted with about 30 guppies and 2 swords, i think the tank looks great with a lot of different coloured fish.
