  1. The GBA averaged around 50 per spawn, wish it was 100
  2. He was by himself for about 4yrs when my father had him, i was starting to wonder if he knew what to do LOL Typical my GBA (different tank) stopped laying about 1 mth ago, looks like they've swapped now.
  3. Just means you will have to get a chiclid tank for hubby LOL
  4. Cool i'll keep my fingers crossed, only other option is a 500mm tank with 6 medium platties. I'll try community tank and if they all dissappear i'll try the small tank.
  5. Ummmmm, white worms love them, they've had all mine so far (dead ones that is) swordtails seem to be all right with them (no probs at all) Could have a small tank just for them is my only suggestion.
  6. Yay i've just found eggs in my males hidey hole after waiting a few mths, but what is the chance of them surviving in a community tank with 2 large angels, 2 rams , 1 large & 2 small/medium clown loaches, 2 angelicious loaches, 2 yo-yo loaches, 2 striata loaches and 2 queen loaches. I'm picking no show but after loosing a ton of guppies i've got my fingers crossed.
  7. Should grow to somewhere between 9-13/14 cm. You wont know what sex it is till it gets larger, the male gets a face full of bristles above the top lip and running up between the eyes (hence the name) and the female sometimes gets a few bristles around her top lip.
  8. I already had what i thought was about 150 (looks like its closer to 200) and wanted to add some different strains to see what they would come up with, only bought 5 at LFS and they only replaced the one that died straight away, i wish they would pay me out on all the dead ones but no show. The other 4 new one are still alive so must have been innoculated against guppy flu LOL
  9. Congrats on the new addition Alan, my 9mth old son loves the fish plenty of lil hand prints all over the glass LOL He stands there and stares at them all moving around and laughs when one comes up and wiggles in front of him LOL MTS before he's 1 yr old, must be a new record
  10. Seems to depend on the b/nose, with my standards you can only just see the bristles from his hidey hole and never see him out but my female is out and about every feeding time, my gold b/nose are nearly always out although they do most of their feeding at night.

    Guppy deaths

I know i will only be buying any new guppies (when they stop dying) from private sellers as i've never had a problem with them, only ones from LFS, i need another tank so i can have my quarantine tank back. Seems some fish are just carriers and not effected by it so not sure if quarantine will help, but it can't hurt.
  12. Up to 92 now, its gotta stop soon (crosses fingers) there's still quite a few left but ya get had enough of taking out dead fish. Thanks Caper

    Guppy deaths

I live in Auckland and have had 78 guppies die since Tuesday, bought 5 from LFS on last Sat & Sun morn 1 had died, got a replacement and then the fun started, 4 new ones still alive and some where around 100 old ones still alive, clown loaches, GBA, swords & an otocinclus are all fine so it's limited to guppies, all i can think of is some have a resistance to "it" (whatever it is) dosing with Melafix but not sure if thats helping or if the ones left are resistant or just healthier. Basically no idea and hoping they stop dying soon. I hope the blue works for you Ballistic and hope the losses stop.

    lots2

Chakuna is a 9yr old boy excited about his fish....much like most others here. I think hes doing well for his age and it surprise me no one will cut the young guy some slack.
  15. 14 more this morning, makes a total of 78 so far, not many looking sick now so hopefully the rest have some resistance to it. Thanks for the support everyone, just be some time for the stock levels to recover and hopefully it is a way of getting stronger guppies. (gotta think positive ay) Thanks rnbo
  16. I've got 5 clown loaches, 2 yo-yo's, 2 queens, 2 angelicious and 2 striata's. The most peacefull would be the striata's followed by the clown's, yo-yo's then queens and angelicious. My pick would be the striatas or clowns. I haven't had skunks before but have heard they can be aggressive.
  17. The fish were in a planted tank for just over 1 week before i bought them to make sure they were ok, sold to LFS by a customer i think. Melafix has made no difference so i was going to try Furan2 tommorrow but by the sounds things with BK it may not make any difference. Fished out another 27 tonight so that makes 64 all up so far, i thought there were around 100 in there but still looks like 100 or so, hard to estimate how many when they wont stay still. I bought 5 fish at the same time from Hollywood and 4 are still alive, the swords have been nibbling at the dead guppies and show no signs of sickness, the GBA, loaches, swords and lone Otocinclus are all healthy so it makes me wonder if there is a disease that only kills guppies, seems strange to target one species but anything is possible i guess. Thanks for the help guys much appreciated I'll let everyone know what the final tally is and if i find something that stops it.
  18. I was thinking of getting another tank to keep the guppies and swords seperate but at this rate it will be a sword only tank in a few days. Cheers Ballistic
  19. On Saturday i picked up a couple of fancy Guppies from Hollywood Mt Roskill, unfortunately my quarantine tank has some platties in it that my g/f unexpectedly bought for me which i didn't want to put in with my swords and guppies, so the new guppies spent 45 mins getting accustomed to the new tank and in they went. Following morning one had died so i took it back and got a replacement on Sunday. Tuesday night i noticed a few seemed umm heavy and were sinking to the bottom having trouble staying up higher in the tank, Wednesday night i took out 4 dead guppies and saw about 4 more that didn't look well, started to dose with melafix. Got home tonight to find 27 dead guppies oops make that 31 now, 37 now, 10 in just under 2 hrs & about another 10 looking sad. 30 odd swords, 3 x GBA & 2 x clown loaches all looking good and healthy. They are in a 4 ft 190 ltr that has been setup for nearly a year running an Eheim 2213 filter & air curtain. Ammonia, nitrite are 0, nitrate is 20 which it has been since just after the tank was setup & ph is 6.8, no salt in the tank, weekly 20% water changes. Does anyone have any idea of diseases etc that affect only guppies?
  20. Not as far as i know, pretty much only the loaches or puffers.
  21. Some fish will eat snails but definetly not all fish. Most loaches will eat them but clown loaches would be the most popular.

    Dying brain?

Oops thought this was a post about politicians with a topic heading like that LOL
  23. I have the spraybar from my 2213 vertical in one corner and the pickup at the same end in the other corner and it works fine (outlet not pointing at the inlet of course) gets good flow around the tank.
  24. Have you tried putting a valve on it? There are a few types available, from a screw type to a simple tap. They allow you adjust the pressure going to your bubble wall and should sort out any presure problems. They are available in 1, 2, 3 or more outlets so you can run several things off one pump.
  25. Sounds a bit techo and clinical, i'll give the natural way a go before trying other methods, a couple of options if that doesn't work.
