  1. Hi Joandwilly huge leaves is what most people is going for. some is as large as your hand extended out. if you have a strong current flow, it does give it a swaying motion. you have done well if you have huge leaves. nothing is wrong with your substrate. if the leaves continue to climb to the top, it shows that there is not enough light for the plant, thus the height. for big leaves, it need good lighting and fertiliser. CO2 will certainly helps heaps.

    Help

doing a regular water change once a week will keep the algae low (algae will never go away) BUT. feeding it with DIY CO2 (you have little cntrol) and fertiliser with low light, you are feeding the algae more than you are feeding the plant. if your plant is completely swamp by the algae, i suggest a complete clamp down; pull out the plant, take out the gravel and boil it in the water and later sun it in the sun light. better still, get a new gravel. otherwise, double dose Excel Seachem to kill the algae. once all is revamp, made sure, you have a strong light, have 50% of the ground of gravel cover with plant stems and pump in your Co2 and fertiliser. otherwise, do not follow the recommended dosage on the label but lower your dose by half depending on the area of plant coverage.

  8. No Choise but to hack off the top of Twisted Val if you do not want your light to be block. it will send out runner and new one will grow. well done Antwan
  9. HI Zev i am still short of two orders. anyone else interested? cheers
  10. Well said, DiverJOhn. 150w over 162 litre is an over kill. 100w will do fine for your tank. How much light and co2 also depend of how well cover is your plant in the tank. to have a lush green effect, you will need a good balance of light, CO2 and fertiliser. DIY CO2 is unstable and will eventually cause bad algae growth.
  11. HI stagger lee, you are number three. two more and i will place the order the rest has to wait a few months. thanks
  12. one buyer have drop out so we are but to 2 orders. we need three more for me to place the order.
  13. Wonderful. i need two more order and i will get to the supplier. i will also need payment via ebanking. cost is the same as last time but must be by courier. $55 for the book and $6 for the courier. any more interested party????
  14. Hi All the last time i have handle to many books. one book got lost and POst refuse to pay me for the lost. any way, it is for a good cause. this is the next batch if there is five order of this incredible book. cheer :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
  15. Ceramic along is effective but couple with the water pump while increase it dissolving rate but 10-20%. Amano uses ceramic alot but most of the time place a water pump on the opposite side of the tank to generate current flow.
  16. i am nt quite sure of that arguement, that the only source of CO2 come from the fish mouth. there must be other sources. if not. a few minutes of bad breath from our mounth, breathe into an air hose and out of the air stone would be sufficient to last a few hours of CO2 for the plant to get by.
  17. it will be very very nice if we have a living stream in our back yard. dug a big hole and build a small room with a glass panel watching on the plants growth and variety of colourful fish swimming by. Hello, i need to snap out and wake up. the fish tank in our house is to assimilate as close as possible the living stream of live stocks. it need human intervention to made sure there are correct balance. we are fotunate we have modern gadget to go automation which early generation do have, yet keep the interest going. unfortunate for the fishes and plants, our learning curve will cost them their live. it also cost us our pocket money. most suceed while other fail. to me CO2 is essential but can also be lethal if not properly use and so are fish food we bought from LFS. CO2 brings down PH level and thus affect the KH and GH (Warren is good on this subject). healthy plant growth mean down with algae and fishes has a more natural habitate to growth, swim, hide and breed. some will grow old, eatten, got disease and some die without reason (mostly out of our ignorance from our part.) sorry about the birds and the bees, i could not resist.
  18. Hi All surface aditation is a must because if you notice carefully, all plants produces a thin layer of oil of the surface of the tank water. to me, it block the ray of light from my tube which is needed for the plant. that is why some aquarist uses surfaces skimmer. Eheim sell their surfaces skimmer too in order to stir the surface and keep it clear. i agree with tankman to keep the outlet mounth piece one inches from the surface level but if possible tilt it upward. in my opinion, the stronger the current, the longer the co2 stays in the water. the current is moving in spiral motion. it will twirl and some will go to the surface while the microscopic one will be twirling below. this is my observation. if your fishes is all at surface level gasping for air, turn off the CO2 immediately. cheers
  19. if you run your strong O2 during the day, it will be competing for space in the water. your Co2 will lose and therefore defeat the purpose of having CO2 in the first place. Blue is right, if you allow the O2 to be back on at night, it will made sure that your CO2 is not excessive.
  20. hi mitch either one will be fine but gravel is bigger and will have a better hold when you are doing initial planting. for sand, the fish may easily disturb the sand and the root will be expose. but i have seen people sucessfully use sand for their plants. if use both, after some time of siphoning, the gravel will sink below. more inportant is that the base needs to be between 3 to 4 inches thick. All the best
  21. Hi All i have now enlarge the picture so that you can see better. thanks
  22. Hi All why not join member in this new site. it is only a few days old. any support is a great support. cheers
  23. Hi All please check this site for useful information and let me know what you think. this is a new site worth viewing. http://www.guppy.co.nz/index.php?name=F ... ic&p=85#85 cheers
  24. the size of your tank will give you a rough estimated need of lighting. lighting are measure by wattage and kelvin. the wattage determine the strenght and the kelving determine the colour of your light. some brand do not measure in kelvin but by Lumilux (not sure of spelling). and some does not said at all. 6,500 kelvin is the best as it closely resemble the sunlight. 10,000 kelvin is pinknish in colour and i think 8,000 is blue. (someone correct me if i am wrong). for wattage, Amano provided guide line such as 2.5 to 3 watt \s for every 4 litres of water. so if you have 230 litre of water, you will need to have at least around 140 wattage of light. this all is to simulate enought sun light for your plant to grow BUT if you do not have enough plant in your tank, you will also be encouraging algae to grow as well (which you do not want). so you need to made sure you have at least half your tank cover on the ground with plant. i strongly suggest that you put the old but going tube aside. you are introducing new plants into your tank and they are trying to establish themselve. their roots needs to develop (thus the needs for root ball fertliser). once your plant is well establish (every little new plant introduction), you can use back your old tude if you want but suggest that you do not use it other than just for lighting purpose. Flourish is for the leave to grow healthy. if you do not want daily dosage, you can dose if on the alternate day but calculate your dosage properly. your plant will either die or your algae will grow. for lighting tube, they are only good for the first six months. this is useful if your are planting new plants. if you see that the plannt is developing new shoots, you will be fine. keep those weekly water changes, it is crucial. i do not know why the LFS said once a efw week. (i would be doing 25% or so every 2-3 days for the discus and rams for their nitrates and clean water). that will be good as it keeps your PH leveled and the water fresh for the plant as well. all the best.
  25. Hi, i have used nutrafin CO2 before and they have work wonders. now i am using pressure CO2 tank with dual guage CO2 regulator and selonoid to shut off electronically with timer. any way this is expensive stuff. i suggest you start with Nutrafin CO2 first to gauge your needs for your plant before you embark on more expensive stuff. i think i have two new sets left. some shop is selling as high as $70-80. i am happy to sell you for $50 each (nett). these are new and have never been used before. they come with new refill pack. i will help you with the fomular (of the mix to produce CO2 or someone can also help). so that you do not have to buy the expensive refill.) another reason for you to buy this is the diffuser. the canister, anyone can replace with the coke bottle but the diffuser is critical so that the Co2 bubble can be absord into your water tank. PM me for more detail. all the best.
