  1. again for the planted tank, there is no need for high and low level of your gravel (or sand). if you plan to have bushy plants, no one can see the height differences. this is just a suggestion.
  2. I believe it is good to have undergravel heater but it is not necessary. what you want is a healthy roots for the plant, a solid foundation. landscape your tank well. use a narrow perspex (2mm thick and approximately 3-4 inches X what ever lenght you want.) silicon it to the base of the tank. give some support if needed. that way, plants with runner will stay in the area you want then to grow. you may want to classified as tall and thin, medium and broad and short and small plants, or green and red plants. there are others will are more complicated such as fast growth (good intake of nutrients) and slow growth (slow intake of niutirents). this is not correct all the time, depending on the plants. substrate fertilizer is to encourage a heathy growth in the roots. but my past experience that if we were to spray it out all over the base of the tank, the plant might not be able to use it in time before it becomes toxic for those unused fertilizer. thus, partial substract and partial ball fertlizer will be good. concentrate a certain area for substract ferterlizer and if the plant grow beyond the allocated area, subpliment it with ball fertlizer. of course you will need water fertlizer for the continue nutrients. i am sure there are lots of advise other hobbyist can offer. Cheers

  5. So Boc may have a used CO2 tank? any one else i can check?
  6. Hi Warren do you know where to buy a used CO2 cylinder? i have look around and could not find any where in NZ that sell a used one. you mention $350 (new) to buy one, what size cylinder are you refering? thanks
  7. All planted tank have algae, it is a matter of controling it. constant water changes keep the algae low and managable. i use to have a wood with algae and it look nice and dreammy when it is fully cover with algae. after a while i begin to struggle with lots of algae with my other plants. so i have to take out the dreammy algae and give it a good clean. from one algae to another "you are a pest!!!" Cheers
  8. Hi Dark no offence, i am trying to find out what is the best deal, money can buy. do you know how much is the cost of a CO2 6.7kg metal bottle? and yes, how much to fill it up with CO2? having the bottle, do i need to send it for inspection? Frequency and cost for doing the inspection. thank you
  9. $323 is cheap. how much is 350 gram is litre. i though gas tank is meassure in litre. i think it is less than one litre of gas it can contain in the steel bottle. i guess it does not include the difuser or atomiser. the gravel i am using is normal one. Any interesting gravel to introduce me? thanks for the information. any one else like to made a fair comment? cheers i have look into the system
  10. Hi All has any one seem the sale of CO2 regulator in traeme? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Lifestyle/Pets ... 794048.htm some of you hobbyists are current using it. Anyone care to made any comments in the area of: price, reliability, practicality and effectiveness? or any things. i had personally use this CO2 regulator before and find it more reliable than DIY CO2 in term of control. are you willing to pay $550 for this precesion equipment? any where else might be cheaper? i am current negotiating with a overseas supplier to bring in such an item (complying to the standard of usage in NZ of course). i am not sure about the cost yet but like to know what the member of this forum thinks. thanks
  11. Hi Ballistic, sorry for the late reply. the cost was stated in the ealier post. if i can secure 20 books, cost per book is $45. now i am taking 5 books at a time which are selling at $55. wating time once i order it will be 2 - 3 weeks. postage only $6.00 for normal post. hence, it will be $61 to send to Wellington. still cheaper than what other people are paying in Canada. (read the earlier post). let me know if you want to the numner 3 person on the order list. thanks
  12. there is the cold water and there is the cold cold water plants. which three species are these plants? i believe your plant could be cold as in room temparature and without the heater. most aquatic plant can stand temperature from 18 to 30 degree. so at 27 degree, it is still ok. well done on you thriving plants. keep regular water change and fertilizer coming.
  13. Hi All anyone else interested to place order for this books? it is indeed a value book for aquarium plant hobbyist with tons of information. it comes with the auctual picture for easy identification of the plants. i have two interested parties and are looking for three more people before i place the order with the supplier for 5 copies. let me know please. thank you
  14. Java Ferms propagate through the top parts of the leave (very interesting). i have planted a small piece of one leaves into the gravel about three weeks ago. i can see new leaves developing. i wil say definately a water plant that will grow from the gravel. you are in safe hand with java ferms. cheers from down down under.
  15. Hello back to you Lorenzo, are you writing from "the netherlands"? anyway, Java ferns are the beautiful plants with dark green sword shaped leaves. They are an excellent first plant for the inexperienced, or a great additional plant for even the most knowledgable aquarist. mine is planted on the driftwood and it clink on perfectly. i have kind of left it unattended but many time it refuses to die. or was it my relentment that brought it back to live. Ha ha.
  16. Very well spread and good combination of discus and tetra fish. it must be hard to streak a good balance between the plant and the fish. Well Done.
  17. Most of my tank is partially close to keep the fish from jumping. but there are time when the plant is growing straight up, you must give it room to grow (and off the cover), especially it is a stalks with plantlets. i also use perspex as a partial cover (4-5mm thick) which warps under the strong heat from the light. i wonder polycarbonate will do likewise. cheers
  18. GOOD ON YOU for the bit and pieces. be sure to let me know once you find out where to get fill up for th CO2. Cheers (but don't get drunk, Ha Ha.)
  19. it is normal for plant to get red when nearing the surface. lighting are normally messure by its wattage. if you tube is produce 36 watt (times) the number of tube will give you a good indication of suficient light. generally 3watt per gallon will be very excellent although some people has when up as high as 4WPG. that is of course assume your tube is not more than 6 months.
  20. do you mind if i can ask where did you get the CO2 controller and how much it cost? i too am looking for pressured CO2 for my tank. WOW. 630l is a big tank.
  21. it sound like nutrient deficiency. i am not to good at this, may brother Alan or Warren can help. how old is your tank? if it is a new setup, weekly change of water is very ideal until the plant stabalise in your tank.
  22. Hi Helene i am not sure if it will attach to glass. but with the fish line, it can be attach to any object. and as i grow, the fish line will disappear. Mosses are found in all countries and there are many strand of mosses. maybe you have found a similar strand to Christmas moss. it look pretty close to x'mas moss. i suggest that you seperate the Christmas moss from java moss. keep tieing with fishing line and letting it grow until you have a hand full. Christmas moss itself have many strand. your moss may one day be named NZ X'mas moss. or Helene Moss. hows that sound.
  23. Hi Caryl i am happy to keep you in the list as people who are interested in place an order for "The Aquarium Plant Handbook". once i have 5 people, i will place an order with the supplier. i will also ask those who had bought the book to give some sort of comment. thank you.
  24. Hi All thank you for your interest, all 5 copies were sold or reserved. the selling price was $55 per copy due to lower quantity ordered from the supplier. even at $55, it is still cheaper in other country like CANADA. http://www.ottawaaquatics.com/item1475.htm thank you.
