  1. heres another one comparing them to my old arcadias
  2. Yes I could find the thread Reef, a couple actually, heres one that wasn't even on the thread I was thinking about you also told me that personally on a visit to your place, just after I got the lights.
  3. Chimera, (whos this james chap ), Mine are 23cm from bottom of bulb to water surface, or 18cm from bottom of reflector to water surface.
  4. be interested in your results Chimera, find some of reefs ones hard to believe, particularly between tank 1 and tank 3 - every thing the same except wattage, same reflectors same bulb manufacturer, se etc, and the light is the same directly under but the 250w is much brighter to the side - Rubbish. I ran 250w arcadias and I know how much brighter the 400w are. You also stated that the "FAD" of 400w lights will result in less growth in an earlier thread Reef, certainly proved that wrong in my tank. As I've said before, its funny how its a FAD if you dont supply it. Mind you, owning a Deltec is apparently a FAD or "club" so i guess it works both ways.
  5. I don't think mine are 40cm, but will be more than 20cm. I'll post when I get home.
  6. I'll measure tonight and let you know.
  7. I'll measure tonight and let you know.
  8. getting good growth and colour from the 14k Narva 400w, so don't know the answer Chimera, growth has increased since I changed, and colours still as good or better.
  9. ditto, except I'll be 2.3 x .65 x .9. Can't wait, and the only extra equip will be extra streams.
  10. If I was you Chimera, I'd put 3 x 1000W over you 3 footer(sorry 5' ) and see what happens. That way we can you learn from your experience
  11. I think so Wasp, water seems a bit clearer, Growth is great... Subjective really, but I'd say yes.
  12. Ok, not much to it really.. Levels.. Ca - 460ppm Alk - 9.6 Dkh (Ca Reactor did keep it steady at 10.5, but with the growth and amount of stonies at present, slowly dropped to 7, so now dosing Kalk as topup water and has come up nicely) Mg - 1300 Temp - 26.5 - 27.5 Nitrate and Phos - both unmeasurable using salifert kits. Ph - 8.2 (dropped to 7.8/8.0 when I cranked reactor up, but again Kalk bought it back nicely) Salinity - 1.026 - refractometer Lights 3 X 400w 14K SE plus luminarc type reflector. (Corals growing and colouring well under previous Arcadia 14K 250w unit, but as I love the acros, want better spread, and more to the point, better penetration so I can keep acros on or near the bottom) I run Bare Bottom, with a seperate Refugium which i would not be without. Ref has a SSB, live rock bits and pieces, macro algae (when it grows) and pods, worms, flatworms , etc. Heaps of flow - although I would like more, as corals grow and inhibit flow. All top up or water change water is RoDi which I moniter TDS, in and out. Topup water is saturated with Lime and automatically topped up at night. (finally - Thanks Steve) I use ASW -Red sea salt, and change 120l per week. Its seems like a good salt, although low in Ca and Alk. I dose CaCl and MgCl when needed to keep levels high (bulk from Med Chem) Feed fish mainly Dry flakes and pallets. Once or Twice a week I give them a treat of Frozen Mysis. Corals fed Pohls Coral Vitaliser, ex ZeovitNZ, every second day. Don't dose anything else - no aminos, vodka, zeobits and pieces (other than CV), strotium, trace elements etc. Anything I've missed??
  13. Layton, its a lovely coral isn't it. Growing very well Skuzza - no. Not using anything.
  14. And some to compare from a month ago... stags 27th july 06 stags today, 38days later - great growth, broke thru water level last week the effo 27th july today
  15. Sharing some pics I took today and some almost exactly 1 year ago. 6th Sept 2005 Front on, end on and stags and today 3rd sept
  16. let me guess reef, its a fad if its bought of any other importer but you. bit of a broken record, and yes TM, you can come in and blah blah blah if you want.
  17. Your reef dip won't work, or iodine dips. I had a huge outbreak, and have manged to eliminate them. Keep doing just as you are. You need to continually check every monti, remove the adults (siphon), scrap the eggs off and siphon out. repeat as required - I checked every 2 or 3 days. You'll get to a stage where you'll only find 1 or 2 and sometimes none for a while, but keep checking, they will come back. When you have them under control, buy a wrasse - 6 line, and it should take care of the stragglers. I don't think they will scoff heaps of them, but mine at least has obviously cleaned up the last few, as my tank has been free of them for months and I had hundreds as the infested over xmas while I was away for 3 weeks. I took out my plain monti cap as it was the favourite food for the nudis, and had encrusted onto the rock, but still battled with 4 other montis and won, so chin up, you need to be on top of them and realise it will take months to beat.
  18. puttputt

    Flat worms

Its either the sixline or the long nose butterfly, althought the sixline had done the work before the LNB was put in. Same situation with the monti nudibranches. Had plenty of them, lost a few colonies etc. removed as many as I could manually over a month or 2 but never eliminated them. Added the sixline, or butterfly, and I now have none. May be hard to believe, judging by other stories of trying to eliminate these things, but for at least 2 months now, I have had zilch, nothing, no nudis. My Montis are growing great, and are checked often - no bugs.
  19. The rate may be related to concentration, but if the sand bed is not full, it will keep using nutrients, albeit taking a longer period of time.
  20. keep trying Layton, you need to. The sand bed doesn't have to know the volume, All it does is trap and process nutrients in the water. Why would it stop doing this if the concrentration of nutrients was lowered. And that it has "knowledge" is not the answer I want.
  21. stop belittling people Layton. Makes you seem like a pompous twit. We understand you theory, but some of us need more than your statements to accept it as fact. Does the sand bed absorb waste only relative to concentration in the water. you say so, what proof do you have. I understand skimmers, the fact that if a skimmer can only remove 95% of the waste, regardless of volume, you are after a period of time end up with the same concentration of nutrients. How does this apply to a sand bed. Surely, if a bed of sand can process a set amount waste before becoming "full", then it will do this regardless of the concentration in the water.
