  1. refugiums are great for growing critters, running a sand bed if you don't want one in your main tank, help stabilise pH if you run reverse lighting, (a place to keep naughty crabs you dont want to kill) but I agree with the others, don't bother trying to use for nutrient control with macro algae, there are much better ways. I love my one, would be without it, but for the life it contains, not for water quality. It will not worsen your water quality either.

    feel free TM.
  3. doesn't look half as bad today, worrying about nothing

    Seaweed

Ah, trouble with your equation Tel is: Y is directly proportional to Z (sorry can't figure out how to paste the correct symbol)

    Seaweed

    take the tang out
  6. ...and look at the mess it's made in your tank Craig
  7. no, only use Pohls CV for the corals, nothing else. Thanks Wasp, will read those.
  8. One thing I did do and month or so ago, is hav a bit of a spring clean in the tank, removed macro algae, shifted rock and blew everey bit I could reach with a hose from a power head clean, shifted alot of accumulated much around. Now, presuming some settled in nooks and crannies, as opposed to being skimmed, then the slime would be feeding on this at the moment. Once it has used this source, then it should stop growing??, would vodka or the like help reduce this short tern food source quicker, as i don't believe it is a continual nutrient issue. What do you think.
  9. finding it and reducing it is the hard part Layton, not prepared to pull tank apart after 12 months, only just maturing, can't skim any more aggressively, run BB, got heaps of flow, run macro algae in ref. Maybe a phopahate remover.
  10. My rocks are good. One side is 15 month old, and one side is 6months old. The newer rocks were cooked, and the tank has never had high nutrients, or any sand bed, even when i had a ssb it was not around of under the rocks. I have some slime of a solid peice of limestone, non porous and certainly in high flow. Layton, it's not a rock issue. TM, aready a lot of flow, anymore and the water would have trouble staying in the tank. Have dropped back the CO2, and started dosing Kalk last week, so will see what happens. May try vodka??, or vinegar, not sure, will read up on it's effects. thanks all.
  11. already stacks of flow Layton, not sure I could run more. The areas in the photos were vacuumed clean yesterday, and its back in a day, quicker even.
  12. photos, dont show how its stringy though, what do you think. TM, corals and fish doing great. Layton, phospahate unmeasurable on salifert (I know not good accuracy), don't run any phosphate removers though Between yellow polyps on cable on pump, hard to see but the bubbles are on fine 1 - 1.5cm stringy slime
  13. it's not flatworms, I'll go and take a photo.
  14. chimera, yes, not easily, yes, getting a chiller when i upgrade upnorth , doesn't come on at all over winter, but yes, plywood makes poor insulation
  15. could well be it reef, as i have incresed the bubble rate recently to add extra alk. Should be able to wind it back now using saturated kalk for top up. At present just siphoning it off regularly, skimming hard and wet, and increased ph with kalk. Still not convinced it's cyno though, i've had that before and this is different, lots of trapped bubble in stringy brown slime.
  16. thats the hard one TM, never had any reading for nitrates, still don't.
  17. Cyno would be good, easier to deal with, but it does sound like dinos. I forms strings with bubbles on it? I hope your right Cracker. Do you dose daily??
  18. I think I,ve got a case of Dinoflagellates going on. Thought it was a bit of cyno, but it is brown, gets worse throughout the day, and gets covered in bubbles. From what I can read its dinos. I had a recent drop in Alk and pH so i wonder if this has caused it. My nutrients are very low, unreadable on salifert test kits, I skim hard and wter change weekly. I need help with this one, as its spreading fast.
  19. ??? such as what Chimera. I'll list mine.. 3 x 400w MH (same as you) 4 32w T8s 2 x 6100 streams on new controller 1 uncontrolled 6000 stream 2 x sieos 2 x power heads 500w + 300w heaters on controller pumps for ref (flow), top up, mixing kalk in top up water. dosing pump for timed top up calcium reactor - large aqua medic Laguna 7 pump for return laguna 6 running 902 the 902 itself and the airconditioner in the room another heater and pump mixing water as well List yours.
  20. i work out my tank uses about $150-180 per month. I doubt anyones jug, or heater uses that a month.
  21. If you count all your tank equip seperately of course the Hot water cylinder and dryer will top the consumption list Chimera, add all your lights, your pumps, your heaters, your skimmers, and reactors togethers and count it as the "Fish tank" - it will be the No.1 user of power (some of us anyway - the 400watt club:roll:)
  22. I've got a real nice orange one, with alot more polyps than the red cap, wasn't called cap??. I think you bought them in a while ago reef, as I got it from Hollywood, albany. Got hammered by the nudis, but they have gone, and it's back to its full glory. Here it is tonight...
  23. got a frag of it off cracker, settled well so far.
