  1. Your black ones are likely OK, especially at only 6 inches. I have heard of them attempting to catch fish, but not succeeding. The green ones are definately fish hunters, I've seen mine try and come close, and a guy on Reef central has seen his eat three fish, he actually saw it. It is obvious from the hunting technique that fish must be the desired prey. But your black one will likely stick to leftover food.
  2. The water quality at Takapuna boatramp today is awesome. Should be OK Saturday also.

    Ozone

Well I've never read either before Kermit. Good, useful information.

    Chemicals.

Me. Both some calcium chloride, and some magnesium. How about do me some in exchange for that frag you're getting?

Excellent filtration. By the way, I'm still interested to see a pic of your torquois stag under 10,000k lighting, if the hold up is because you are trying to do a lot of other pics, don't worry about it, I'm just keen to see the stag. Thanks.

And here is a corner of my tank from back when it was a softy tank.

    Ozone

Seems like a lot of money. That kind of money could get you a heckuva lot of zeolite product.

Here is a white polyped leather. Very pretty, this is one of many frags from my big one.
  9. The 10,000 k's are Ushio 150 watt DE. They seem to be doing a pretty fair job they have been in use since just after Christmas. The only reason I bought them though was they were on special for US $59.00 each at the time. (Custom Aquatics). All up I think a lot of the argument over brand is academic. I've always bought whatever is cheapest. Not to say some are probably better than others though, also, I'm not that experienced with MH.

    Ozone

It was a good thing in the days of less efficient skimmers, as a means to increase skimming power, oxidize nasties that were being left behind by the skimmer, and some other lesser functions. Some people still swear by it, others have moved on to more modern methods based on better filtration generally. Ozone may be counter productive to some filtration methods. Others will disagree, but IMO it should be regarded as a means to beef up a filtration system that could use improvement.
  11. I was running my tank on 14,000 k's but changed it a few months back to 10,000 k,s. The coral has done a lot better. The general appearance of the tank is more yellow, but the improved colour of the corals after a few months has made up for this. I've also added some actinic tubes which I don't think does anything for the livestock but has improved the appearance of the lighting. The ratio is 2 x 150 watt 10,000k MH, and 2 x 18 watt actinic. It's still not as blue as most tanks I see though.

    food grade pails

    Payless Plastics stock them.
  13. Warwick, having red slime (cyano bacteria) is all about having too many nutrients in the tank of a type that make the cyano grow. To get it sorted, keep that skimmer working at max, and syphon as much cyano as you can, as often as you can. When you syphon it, you remove both it, and the nutrients that are in it, thus stopping re-growth, although it may take a while to stop the re-growth. Also do not over feed and add unnessecary suppliments. Good flow is part of the battle because it will blow the cyano into suspension to allow it to be skimmed, but mostly just keep stubbornly and persistently skimming and syphoning, you will win the battle. This next one is controversial, but try chucking 10 or 15 mls of vodka in the tank. (I joke not, it often works).
  14. Your question - "Anybody here use..." The answer - may be worth noting nearly everybody has recommended against, other than for running carbon or similar, and I would second that also. Not sure if you were merely asking if it can run in salt, the answer to that is yes. But if your question was if it would be beneficial to your saltwater tank to use it, then the general consensus would be no.

  16. Oh. Well I hope his tank was clean! Oops!!
  17. Well I've just been and collected 4 litres of "Steves Special Sump Grunge" Contains lots of assorted critters, should get things started.
  18. Thanks. The green ones I have in high light do not look as good as the ones in lower light, perhaps the green ones do not like as much light as the other ones as Reef said No frags at present Chimera, I'm still trying to get them to grow, but I'll let you know if it happens. Strange thing is around maybe 2 years ago I got a frag of green monti from cookie extreme, and it grew incredibly fast, you could see it each day I've never seen another coral grow so fast. Now nothing. Oh well, there are always more mysteries to solve :-?
  19. Thanks Reef we have put a shrimp from the beach in as a test, and no problems so far, perhaps this information about cowfish was incorrect.
  20. Just need some help with this, I can't get them to grow. The pink, and purple montiporas are doing fine, but there are several green frags at various places around the tank, for many months and they are still just that, frags, almost no growth at all.
  21. We have a fish only tank with a cowfish in it, we are thinking of adding a cleaner shrimp but heard rumours that the cowfish will eat the shrimp. Anybody know anything about this?
  22. Nah! the octopus doesn't have to worry about the flying pigs cos they are just in the mind of the guy running the lab. Before he saw the octopus running across the floor I think he was smoking something really nasty

That might be it Brian but I'm not totally sure. The frags in my frag tank where I am not too fussy about nutrient levels are similar, but go red if I put them in my main tank. Peter (RBN) has a frag of it and his is nice color, better than mine. It is not a zeo tank, but his is under a 400 w MH. I have several frags of this in my tank and the closer they are to the light the nicer the color. BTW they are normally a darker color than in the pic, I have accidentally been running the tank with Po4 levels to low, resulting in very pale colors, I am now allowing Po4 to rise a bit.

    Some Pics

Yes I'm on a different computer now and it is clearly a leather, the other pics look a lot better too. I think I'll have to get a new monitor.
