  1. You talking about a crab? If so, depends what else you are keeping but they all have to eat something. There is a tropical brown hairy crab that is harmful to corals but don't know if that is your one. But most of the crabs do more harm than good, but there are a few that can be good in an aquarium, but no brown hairy ones as far as I know anyway. Best plan would be to isolate it if you ever get the chance to catch it, and also to attempt a photo. If you could post a photo on Reef Central you will get some good info, those guys know more about crabs because of the live rock they can get.
  2. No, it's Al Cheapo, as in Al's Cheapo   Get it? Get it?
  3. When I shake mine, I see mulm come off, and sometimes this will even temporarily visibly cloud the tank. I think the purpose is severalfold, one just to get it off the stones and make room for new bacterial growth, one to put the stuff in the water column where it can be skimmed along with the nutrients it contains, and the other one to feed corals. Some of it is too big for corals, but some is probably OK, bacteria can be excellent coral food. Anyhow, like much of the zeovit system the manufacturer says one thing and other people have other ideas, but I'm happy just to follow the instructions, it makes sense to me anyway. Having said all that there are people who don't shake or pump it and it still seems to work. However I was told by G. Alexander ( a German with an amazing sps tank ), that if he does not pump his reactor daily he notices his corals go paler after a time. Hey, check out this new product http://zeovit.com/forums/showthread.php ... #post38510
  4. Never mind, you'll be very happy with the grotech one. ( Looking at all those pics I think mine is the cheapest nastiest one out there! )
  5. By the time you buy the natural sea salt, and buy everything else you want to add to it, it will have cost you more than the proper stuff. Never mind quality - do you know what impurities might be in plaster of paris? Have you ever seen a pic of a nice tank that uses this method? If it's for reasons of economy, go NSW. The making of artificial salt mix is quite a science. If you ring Clarkes Chemicals for a quote, I think you will get a rude surprise.
  6. There is a place down the road from me called Engineering Plastics, that sell every o ring you could ever want. But I think every town will have somewhere that does o rings, just got to phone around some likely places.
  7. When starting out on zeovit the reactor can be the major expense, so thought I'd post a pic of my DIY one. Made out of those food containers you get at Foodtown, the whole thing cost less than $20.00. Should say though, this is a small tank reactor, good for up to 100 gallons. To do the daily pump, I lift the top section out, and while it's still underwater give it a few good shakes. Works well.
  8. Sounds like your bet is safe cos some will go 12 hours, some won't. So you're both right / both wrong.
  9. Oh yes. If you do not have a user name on Reef Central, you cannot get in to the Chemistry Forum. If you are interested in marine, I would recommend creating a user name at Reef Central, it is only a 5 minute or less process.
  10. Can't remember who it was a while back, but someone was wanting to use dried sea salt to make salt mix for their aquarium. Anyhow, found this little read that will help decide not to do it. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthrea ... did=656138

It was a closely fought contest, two great sides hard at it. IMO both teams were equal, we were just the ones who got the lucky last points. A great game to watch. Now getting ready to see the Wallabies dispatched Ought to be easier than South Africa, long as we don't get complacent.

    Big rip

If you get some new dried rock straight from the shop, stick your nose right on it and take a good sniff, you will likely smell ammonia.

What they call "cycling the tank", is really mostly about cycling the rock. To me the idea of adding something to the water is flawed, there will be plenty of material already within the pores of the rock to effect cycling. Adding material to the water does not speed up the process. The idea should be to keep other additives to a minimum to keep the newly cycled rock as phosphate free as possible. Once the rock is cycled, stock the tank lightly and build bioload slowly over several months, to allow bacterial populations to build in accordance with need.
  14. Just to be fair, not all my quotes were from you Layton. I said authorities (plural). It was really just meant to be lighthearted. They have all genuinely been said though.

    carbon dust

If this is from yesterday, likely no more damage will happen, the dust will quickly accumulate general detritus and just join the rest of the detritus.
  16. Chimera - No! Please don't do it!! You have obviously been led astray and have not done your homework on this, or you would not make such a mistake. If you had done some more reading of the FACTS you would know going zeovit is a mistake. You must have missed them, so here are some FACTS, quoted from some noteable chat site authorities :- "Zeovit is a scam" "The inventor, Thomas Pohl, is a liar" "It poisons the corals" "It leaches something into the water" "It has just been proved that Zeobac does not contain any bacteria. The honest truth is it is more likely to be urine". "Thomas Pohl should be sued in an American court" "It is snake oil" "Brown ones are healthy" "It stops test kits working properly, so you think your water is good, but it isn't" "Zeovit makes coral colours go wild and unnatural" "The coral looks healthy and grows fast because it is being poisoned" "It might have serious consequences for the long term health of the tank" "There is only one good zeovit tank in the world, and the pictures from it have been photoshopped" "It is not natural" And worst of all, now that everybody is jumping on the bandwagon, my own tank will soon no longer have that special advantage over other tanks.

If it's hard to get at may be better to use Joes Juice, you will still get a kill even if you just get some on the mouth, Kalk you'd need to be more thorough.

    Most wanted fish.

Yikes! Reminds me of someone I do business with!!! .
  19. What was the salt brand? Was the water changed 100% or something? A small water change ought not to cause too much grief.
  20. Possibly some kind of water quality issue. Be a good plan to check for salinity, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and temperature. If all that is in line, look at oxygenation, any signs of ill health in the tank such as excess algae, see if the clown has been attacked by another fish, any disease such as white spot. Make sure your salinity checker is accurate, inacurate ones are very prevalent.
  21. Kinda wondering why I post a businessess phone no. and get moderated, and Chimera posts a businessess phone no. and doesn't get moderated?
  22. Go BOC!!! Another happy customer
  23. That's interesting! I knew leathers were masters at releasing toxins, so did not occur to me that the sps may be fighting back. In my tank which is mixed, just wondered if the one finger leather may be affecting the sps?
