Well I've got a photo, unfortunately my photo skills are not the best however, this millepora frag in the middle of the pic. I've been feeding Pohl's Coral Vitaliser daily for a week now. Around a week ago this frag was brown. Does not show properly, however it is now red / peach. It also has little yellow new "buds" on it, just wish I could photo better it is a lot more obvious in real life. These buds have appeared in the last week, and also on all the other milleporas in the tank.
  2. The worst part for me, when I pulled my DSB, was having to sell my Heteractus Malu, he was a beautiful rich colour and the clowns looked so good in it. But he would not have made it in a BB. IMO DSB can be excellent for providing habitat for a lot of creatures, just not so good from a water quality angle.

    Nasty Smell

    Smells all gone now! Beautiful
  4. There is a lot of conflict of info, and some things will be right in one situation and wrong in another. There is a lot of research to do. But probably the best way is to look at a few successful tanks and get ideas straight from the person. That way you will understand the reasoning behind things.
  5. As a mudslinger myself, I think even the mudslinging matches will often inspire useful info. Also of note is the way everybody follows them for entertainment purposes. Ha Ha. Sometimes though mudslinging threads will inspire information so useful it is in fact useless, such as this little gem from a recent mudslinging thread Quote - "I knew reasonable flow velocity had an effect, just couldnt remember what on earth it was about fritctional loss in pipes - "From equation 1 we know that the flow velocity is inversely proportional to the square of the pipe diameter"
  6. Good choice. My son has just done exactly that, with the same size tank. He lucked out I had a spare skimmer for him, the skimmer is important you are best to get a good one, likely around a thousand dollars or so ( Salt tanks aint cheap). Don't use the cannister or the air pumps. Salt's a bit different the filtration is done by bacteria that live in the rock. You get special coral rock that is porous for the bacteria to live in, it is referred to as "live rock" due to it's population of bacteria, and eventually, hopefully, the many other things that will grow on it. But the biggy to think on here is money, even though you may have a lot of gear already, you will be likely to spend 2 grand or more to set up. All newbies including myself like to think they are just a little smarter and can do it cheaper than the rest, but eventually to do it properly, some big bucks must be spent. EDIT - Sorry misnoma I wrote this before seeing your post, covered some of the same ground
  7. Yes my meaning was not clear, have edited the previous post Also should add that nearly all white spot in our NZ tanks is irritans, the less dangerous one.
  8. First off it should be identified, is it marine ich (irritans) or is it marine velvet? If it is velvet, IMO action should be taken to cure / minimise. If it is ich (irritans), then a leave alone approach can be attempted, however fish may still die of this and treatment may be appropriate. More research than what is in this thread should be undertaken, here is an article on ich (irritans) http://www.petsforum.com/personal/trevo ... neich.html And here is an article on marine velvet http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004- ... /index.php Of special interest to some should be the section in the first article titled "Correcting myths about marine ich"
  9. Yes, kind of noticed that myself! Is it more getting into marine, or are more starter uppers finding the site? If so, and the site can be of assistance to help them succeed, we will end up with a larger number of reefers, a good thing for everybody!

    Nasty Smell

Been getting a real nasty smell around the tank for a while, could never figure it out. Anyway, today, I finally found it, there is a kind of snail graveyard on top of the grate on my overflow. I've pulled them all out now, could have easily been a hundred of them. Amazing how much smell even one dead snail can make. Can't have been doing the water much good either. It will be on my list of regular jobs now!
  12. I like that. Other than one thing though - No reactors? as in no calcium reactor? If you want simplicity / no work, consider a calcium reactor. Since I've gone that way myself I've realised just how much messing around with additives I had to do before.

Positive effect, with the Reef Booster, when I used it I noticed better polyp extension. There's debate about the meaning of polyp exptension, but it is largely agreed that it can be related to respiration, and therefore presumably metabolic activity and therefore growth. However with something slow growing like sps, it is a bit hard to gauge the true effect of something over a short time, but polyp extension is generally taken as a good sign. Timeframe with reef booster, I fed it once a week for several weeks. However as one capsule contains several times as much as one dose for my tank I then kept it in the fridge once open and spun one capsule out to a daily dose for one week. The effect on the sps then lessened, it may be it does not take well to being refridgerated, although Cookie I believe refridgerates it and is happy with that. That's why it's all a bit vague as a hobbyist about the effects of sps feeding, it's just observation but can be influenced by imagination and what you want to see. So I'm hoping to get some more feedback and see what others have found.
  15. Warick I think you just suddenly found more new friends then you ever knew you had!
  16. You'll get Nori a lot cheaper at the supermarket, to be used to make sushi.

    New Addittions

Correct, not good in the long haul. This is a new tank, hopefully the situation will correct itself. However, this will be a case of too much stocking too early, and is likely the cause of the demise of the shrimp, which is less forgiving than the fish. However, now the deed is done, it is just a case of hoping all the livestock can survive until the tank comes right. Sometimes these situations do end in tears though.

Not sure what the ingredients are, it's a secret  . However, it has a fish oily type smell something like Reef Booster, combined with a vinegary type smell.

Just thought I'd start a thread on the subject I know a few guys are doing this now. My own experience is I've tried one brand that did nothing, then I got a bottle of Salifert Coral Food, which seemed to have an effect, then I got talked into trying Reef Booster, which definately had a positive effect, and now of course Pohls Coral Vitaliser has been released so I had to get a bottle, and it's only been a few days but I'm impressed. Anyhow feeding sps is quite new and somewhat experimental, so hoping some will add their thoughts, knowledge or experiences.
  20. Just not sure if they would in a large tank. In mine there is little option, and in the wild they hang in a group, each close to its own bolt hole. But in a big tank they may spread out, somebody else will have to answer that.
  21. firefish make a pretty, low bioload, non aggresive, school. Cost me $75.00 each at Jansens so I couldn't get to many, but they certainly work well in a small tank like mine.
  22. Beautiful. What film was it on?
  23. going to be an interesting thread
  24. In general greenery of marine origin will contain less Po4 than terrestrial vegetables, so will be more suitable from that viewpoint. As an example boiled broccoli was a recommended tang food some years back. Then it was found to often contain a very high % phosphate, and is now rarely used.
