  1. fishie ironically has gone to sleep with the fishies :ske: :fshi:
  2. yea I'm thinking the same thing but i would like to give him the chance, tho I'm hoping he does survive but not expecting him too if he shows signs of getting worse that compost heap hole will get a fish shaped hole filled in :ske:
  3. mine I've had in ph's from 8.2 all the way down to 6.8 and always been looking as bright as these ones tho the blue face is a bit darker on mine and the yellow is like a metallic gold, tho it could just be your camera steeling some of the colour? yours have a bit more red on the belly that mine don't tho i might try take a photo...
  4. oh my goodness if i had one of those or the parts for it i would so be doing that "Update" he survived the night upside down, he is resting next to the sponge filter and some (very little) of his boy-ency problem is solved still tending to be upside down tho, due to it being a sideways tendency to flip now (rather than tail over head) i managed to rest him next to the filter with the filter assisting in keeping him upright the damaged scales are standing upright and whiteish bubbles have formed over injury's (I'm assuming its like a fish scab?) he is still aware tho not moving anything other than side fins and gills, mouth, eyes so i think he is just a bit worn out from a hard night
  5. hey all one of my cichlids has grown a bit too big to fit through a hole in a castle he lives by and so my plecos decided he would make a nice meal, unfortunately for them i went to feed my fish and found him thinking he is dead, low and behold he is a fighter and when i moved him out of the hole tried to swim away upside down only using his side fins so symptoms are currently upside down tho attempting to make it right sometimes, body is rigid, anal fins are flat to body, missing a number of scales (about 35-40%), redness around dorsal fin, fraying of all fins on the plus side seems very alert, trying to right himself, all injury's i see are superficial to body and fins i have quarantined him in a tank with tonic to protect him from any infection but Ive never had a fish survive once he is upside down so any help?
  6. quick google search said 6.7-8 for these fish (http://diszhal.info/english/cichlids/en ... uensis.php) but frontosas are between 7.8-9 (wikipidea) so little bit of over lap... and i have seen them in a african cichlid tank before (mine they were sold to me at the high ph but then i read up about them so changed them down because i could)
  7. lol yea they didn't move much :dunno: :rolfl:
  8. oh mine are old enough about 15-20 cm prob about 2yo (at a guess) they were large when i got them they haven't grown much since I've had them if at all
  9. 2 years! maybe that's my problem mine are only together for 7 months or so
  10. I'm selling 2 of them I tried to breed them but they didn't pair, apparently they are hard to pair and use a lot of space to spawn they are such beautiful fish ill give them another go one day but its the deal of buy 6 when a pair form sell the other 4
  11. omg  go to mitre 10 buy the tube of sealant (aquarium safe) its about $20 get a paint scraper or sharp knife scrape off all the silicone you can see on all the joins for that pane of glass pull off the pane of glass put silicone on the joins after cleaning it with a least a rag to insure all old silicone is off place the bit of glass on the silicone you have put on the joins insure there are no bubbles or thin spots (you will see them when you look through the glass at the joint) put a book on it to apply pressure to it while it cures wipe excess silicone off with your finger insure there is a bit extra silicone where old silicone meets new silicone in corners leave it like that till next day come back cut a nice line where there is spread of silicone on the glass too far from the area you have siliconed with a craft knife scrape that extra silicone you got all over the place off with the pain scraper let it cure for another 6 days or how long it says on the tube (usually 7 days) and its done! its not hard in the slightest and all you could lose is $20 and a couple of days any problems pm me ill give you my number and you can call me
  12. totally agree the point of my post was about the temperature for rock pool fishes may be a topic of interest from a tank example and no im not saying not to be sensible about it i would never have it anywhere near sunlight for example i don't indorse curtly in any way and best to make the fish as happy and comfortable as possible but its best to remember how we look after our tanks is a guideline.. a very good guide but not the only way example of this is water from the ocean vs tap water with some marine salt and all the other additives to make it like the sea water from the ocean can contain many different harmful things to the fish (worms desiese etc) but contains many minerals bacterias and good stuff (the taste of the ocean) vs water from the tap treated to remove chlorine (or make inert) the taste of copper, pvc, the local possim's muddy foot who went for a swim in the dam to clean between his toes, then all the additives to remove or add elements and marine salt, to us it all tastes salty but to a fish im sure they can taste the current im not saying either way is better than the other (tho i would go for the tap water myself) not everyone can go to the beach and pick up 200L of ocean most people who want to set up a local tank look at it as the fish is right there for free i don't want to (or can't) afford all these skimmers, chillers, heaters, filters, living rocks, salts, test kits, uv lights, special spectrum lights etc basically all the things for a tropical marine tank but making it colder for our fish (btw that's what ideally you would need so please be aware of that) overall im saying make the fish as happy as you can the best way you can but there is more than one way to keep a fishes house free of dirty dishes if you cant keep them in a way the water will be stable and healthy for the fish don't do it after all kelly taltins takes their water from the sea...
  13. when i was much much younger (like 10?) i may have had a tank i kept shrimp, flounder, crabs, baby rock cod, black snapper fry, sea slugs(really cool shoots ink if you poke it!), kinna, few types of starfish, a few other things i found at the beach just had a little filter in it and a air stone did a water changer of about 50% from the sea each week and i kept that for the summer in winter i got bored and let them all go then did the same the next year a had some sprats in one year and a black mau-mau too (that was super cool biggest fish i ever owned must of been about 10 cm) anyway my point it i never had a problem and i lost only 1 fish (crab got it) all the fish seemed to love mince and whatever was for my dinner if you keep to the fish and no ammonites and pick your plants shouldn't have a problem (tho i don't know if you want to get a chilli bin of water from the beach or not) also now I'm a bit older I've found out some of those fish are not really recommended (by law) to take from the sea (something to do with undersize?) but i let them go (also apparently not recommended?) so just pick your fish wisely oh and Walkworth is quite a warm place and rock pools can get quite warm during the day please don't shoot me for any of the things i may have done here i was only little and didn't know that it was wrong i wouldn't do it again id pick my fish also turns out it apparently is a mission and takes a long time to cycle a cold water salt water tank (like 6 months) tho like i always say water changes are good please note this is a i may have done this scenario it could be totally fabricated so cant be used in a court of law as any kinda factual events
  14. just a idea to keep the filter and heater out of the tank... set up a sump/plastic container under the table (only needs to be big enough to hold every thing in it and you can put a lid on it (i would) put one of those filters that are about $20 from the pet store in the plastic container (little brother of this one http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/f ... 277873.htm ) hook up the out flow to some air hose back up to the tank to out flow into the plastic container use this idea... http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/foru ... ystem.html tho you don't have to use pvc the guys on youtube use that black irrigation hose (13mm) (about $15 would do the entire thing) and you only the out flow part. oh and put the heater inside the plastic container (tho sit it on something so you don't melt a hole in it) if your not making a little free fall with the water back into the tank you can have your air stone or however you want to aerate the water in the sump/plastic container too that would get everything out of the tank with the exception of a little bit of black pipe in the corner just a idea tho
  15. i would defiantly use oxygen in the bags for the travel of the fish (i don't know much about the corals because i mostly deal with fresh water..but i don't think it would be a bad idea anyway) when fish travel overseas (for some reason im imagining little fish passports and another little fish asking them "reason for your visit mr clown?") they use pure oxygen in the bags to help them survive better and a stressed fish does use more oxygen basically think of it this way.. ordinary air in bag only keep in bag for 4 hours max and bigger fish (or more fish flesh with more than one fish in bag) less time in bag- with oxygen in bag up to (from memory) 30 hours in bag some of your good fish stores (i think some anamates do it) can bag put oxygen in the bags for you for a small fee for when people are moving house or posting fish alternatively there are those oxy shells you can buy at the pet stores cost about $2.50 a shell tho they devolve faster in salt water not sure what affect they will have on the water chemistry tho but that's what they are for anyway. With your drip acclimation of the fish you prob wont need to worry about the bags of warm water, 1. if you warm the water back up too quickly it will shock the fish the drip acclimation of them is done for 2 very important reasons to get the chemicals correct for the fish and to get the water to the same temperature if you use the warm bags it could heat the fish too quick and shock and kill your fish also the more water they travel with the better the water will stay warm if its possible to float them in a sealed chilly bin with warm water may be a good idea, when i moved my fish last i just had them in the chilly bins and they were happy for the 4 hours they were in there and then i drip acclimatised them directly in the chilly bin, much better than trying to deal with holes in bags from fins i hope this helps!
  16. tank looks amazing! so super jealous
  17. what i would tend to do (tho not knowing how those 2 filters look like as im no filter guru) i would put the bio media from the old filter (usually hard white things) into the new filter (replacing the new stuff) and maybe some of the sponges and that would be me done, some people would say run them together for a while and other stuff but i think that would be fine as is because it would keep most of the good stuff doing that anyway
  18. that is a surprisingly good mix of fish i like it, tho i do share some of the caution on the corys the other fish may not eat them but that doesn't mean they wont get killed, they are all very big fish i don't know if the tank is big enough or not, its gonna be a try and see deal i think, maybe a large common pleco wont go amiss makes cleaning a big tank like that a bit easier, whats the dimensions of the tank btw?

just don't paint it in the tank just paint the outside because you can see through the glass unless its heavily tinted then i guess you wouldn't need to paint it anyway also unless you paint too thinly you wont see brush strokes anyway because the glass surface will give it a smooth appearance anyway (kinda like pressing your hand against the window)
  20. i didn't know about this method but had thought about it then figured must be no point or i would have heard about it, but after reading about it im defiantly giving it a go any recommended potting mix or soil to try in nz?
