  1. lol its really paper i just put pva glue over it to make it hard enough to hold straight and look good in the photo
  2. no nails at all! just number 8 wire all the way! that's not even wood its just paper i printed to look like wood to make it look good for all my fans. real answer: no way! only some select places can be nailed that have no forces applied to them anything that requires any sort of external forces needs to be screwed this is 90% screws and slotted wood bro. seriously thousands of dollars of fish and gear and id risk it on some flimsy stands? gotta be kidding me. not a backyard jockey
  3. lol yea i had a bit of a think about it asked around about strain weights on wood and things like that Ive done a bit of building in the past so i know how fragile wood is but its all quite solid there is no movement at all in the stands loaded or not they are rated to be able to hold 4 times the weight that Ive got on there so im not too worried about them even the corners are still well strengthened, a tho it looks flimsy because of what you can see its really quite strong
  4. i think they must be getting better Ive only had 1 leak out of about 20 i haven't had to put any fish in the tank yet but im expecting that i may have to within the next week Ive got some red jewel fry there and the next group of them will become free swimming within the next few days i can see the eggs there now
  5. i think it might have been you that mentioned this idea to me but basically it lets me put fry into each compartment (above the blue mesh) then when i want to do a water change i just lift the inner part and put it back down and that will provide the water change Ive also left enough room around the inner part to let some cleaner fish do the dirty work for me
  6. funnily enough my airline is basically a water drippier system but rather than running water im running air, its all airtight so no losses in pressure but you buy them from any hardware store(even the warehouse tho more expensive) for about $1.60 each its a little black tap that plugs into your 10 or 13mm main airline, it can run from completely closed off to quite a lot of bubbles i think i ran the entire room (excluding pump) for about $35
  7. lol no this is definitely not anywhere near quarantine standard this is just basically a tryout of setting up a room specifically for fish the other room is for the quarantine and yes most of these tanks are off trademe i cant really expect to go straight into a quarantine setup without having a fish room set up first this way i can work out kinks and cost of the things needed for that, kinda look at this as a test room if i went straight into trying something like that right away i would surely make some massive muck-ups right away as a example: the lining of the walls for insulation if it wasn't enough and i cooked my first shipment during the day and froze them over night because i haven't taken the time to try it first i would have a total loss of livestock and have to rebuild the entire room from scratch, then all the MAF part of it would have been a waste and id be down thousands of dollars and that much further from the goal this project is not a do it over night, it requires planning and time but i will get there.
  8. yea its not too bad im enjoying it so far! once i get this all going how i want ill get onto the other room as its still achievable but so far i happen to have some little red jewel fry and some convict fry growing quite quickly hopefully ill have some other fish making there way soon too tho
  9. let me know if you cant view the pics and ill try upload them again
  10. yip ill try take some now to post if i can find my camera!
  11. thanks! sorry ive been so long for the reply im defiantly going to do this ive just had about 40 red jewels start swimming around yesterday so ive got them in a jar so ill move them into a new setup like that soon
  12. i can prob find out one of my friends use to work for water care collecting the samples ill see if i can get in touch with him
  13. im quite interested in this because i did have the exact same problem before i also had 3 tanks i had a community tank a barb tank and a platy tank, the barb tank was fine but the other 2 was just losing so many fish just as a idea does anyone outside the north shore have this problem? and even more specific outside between northcote and glenfield? im thinking it might be a water supply problem something our tests just are not showing up an odd salt or additive or something the TB idea sounds valid too tho
  14. lol you know i knew i was doing something wrong when i was writing it but i couldn't put my finger on it.. but i was having fun so i sent it
  15. so you physically lift and drop the internal tank without changing any water in the main tank? its a neat trick if that's all you have to do
  16. yip it can also be seen as random deaths over a long time because it kinda goes like this.. 1. fish dies 2. oh no! 3. does water change 4. few days later 2nd fish dies 5. oh shiv! 6. bigger water change (gives more oxygen into the water) 7. few days plus a few days later 3rd fish dies 8. whats going on! 9. series of water changes 10. no fish die 11. stops regular water changes 12. fish dies week later (depending on tank size, size of fish, quantity of fish) 13. is it still not fixed i don't know whats goin on!!!! 14. headache sets in judgement goes cloudy colt 45 looks friendly 15. step 16 gets spread out due to water changes that are sporadic and still not completely fixing the problem 16. fish die faster due to damaged lungs till 1 fish survives (or close to) usually the most active fish the bigger fish or fish that usually live in high oxygen environments die first also sickly fish will sometimes out live apparently healthy happy fish because of this
  17. just as a bit of a stab in the dark does your tank have good aeration? you know Flourish Excel decreases the oxygen content in the water just a idea tho... just thought it might be a reason as it takes a while for signs to show and then death tho i had the same problem in a community tank was losing 1-2 fish a week got most of the fish from Hollywood fish farm Albany and animates wairau park i am a fan of both those places because the staff are great but its got me thinking.. (don't have the problem anymore because i sold the tank and most of the fish in it)
  18. could make your own its much cheaper and not hard to do at all get any glass place to cut glass buy silicone $25 and glue together and let set for 7 days theres calculators online and here on the forum that you type in size of tank and it says use this glass this thick
  19. now i think about it my first anniversary is on the 23rd i should do something...

  21. male of female? my sister has 2 already but doesn't want them to breed (she is in glenfield)
  22. they still look unhappy to me ive taken to separating off a section of the tank with glass for them and putting a larger type gravel in the bottom for the fry to hide in i do that with almost all my fish now
  23. thankyou! now thats the stuff i have been trying to find ill have a bit of a search around those links you have given me and then try to get the tank sorted to the most effictave way to get the tank in the right direction im not a fan of ever having anything die on me and i want the tank to be a happy place
  24. sorry everyone i appoligise i guess i was a bit supprised and worried people were angry about my tank, people didnt seem like it was a wow thats kinda cool thing like how i saw it, i thought it was a weird unusal creature most people are not fimilar with and would want to know more about it so thats why i took it home, i thought it might be nice for me or someone with a estlabished tank to find out more about something diffrent and if people decided it was a bad thing to have and should take it back the sea is only a few mins up the road to release it, when i hear about a new fish or even a new fish name to me i want to know as much as i can about it im fasanated by diffrent fish and sea creatures and alwasys wanting to know more about them and the hobby. so i took it that it wasnt much liked that i just started the tank with creatures in it let alone a large unusal traveling creature like that and that i had to follow a set rulls on how to set up a saltwater tank so im sorry it was a missinterpertation of wording on my part and i didnt mean to sound angry about the comments i had recieved i just wanted to know if i was missinterperting what i was reading and trying to figure out if it is best i take it back or if i would be able to keep is as i do like it
  25. you guys sound angry about it? im going to be carefull about how i look after the tank and make sure nothing starts to go wayward with it all but you have made me curious about one thing he is a living creature in the tank how could he not make any difrence to the cycleing of the tank? he will still have some amount of bioload and if not then it wouldnt matter if he is there or am i missing something? my old native marine tank i had years ago i had about 50 fish some snails and a few crabs in and i never had any deaths in for over a year and im setting this one up in a similar fasion just with a few extras that i think might be good for the tank
