most of it is not that old of glass so and ill im doing is putting some wd40 on the blade and it works well on the 3 mm but the thicker glass just gives me problems also im thinking about lining the walls with sheet plastic kinda like the garden stuff and sealing it with silicone so ill be able to wash them all down no problem
-
maybe its my inexperence but every bit of 6m ive done has gone wayward i can get perfect clean cuts almost every time on 3 and 4 mm but 6 and above just goes off on its own tangent and ive gone and bought a new glass cutter but still same problem also another update ive almost finished all the shelving ive got a few of the tanks in there ready for the water and filters to go in so hopefully ill get most of that done this weekend

Hey all sorry about taking so long to get back on here for some reason I haven't been able to get on here for about a week So a bit of a update I've insulated one of the rooms with poly 50mm HD (that will have to be the breeding room the MAF one will take a little longer because ill have to save some money for MAF and resourcing ) I'm in the process of making tanks (a little nervous on trying to cut the 6mm tho) so doing fry tanks with 3mm at the moment Also I've finally got some better answers from MAF about the requirements for the building kinda got a bit stumped with the anti contamination room tho but ill come up with some brilliant idea (I hope), and every thing else on the list seems quite do able so I'm happy about that!

from what ive read fry grow slower if the tank is too large as they use more energy to swim around in it. is there much truth to that?
-
i would love to have huge growouts but im a little limited for size in my room. personally i think albino fish would be kinda difficult to sell as most people love the coloring of the fish but just a question do your albino tropheus have blue eyes? is that 2 growouts per breeding pair?
-
after hours and hours of searching high and low i think i may go for 9 tanks 400x1000x400 (breeders) 12 tanks 300x600x300 (grow outs) 20 tanks 380x250x200 (fry tanks) i still don't know if this is a good ratio or not but it seems to fit nicely in the room so unless anyone can make a suggestion?
-
hey im setting up my fish room and will be setting it up for breeding i plan on having about 9 tanks for adults each 1000 x 400 x 400 and im trying to figure out sizes for grow-out tanks and fry tanks also the ratio of tanks per breeding tank eg one breeding tank, 2 grow-outs, 2 fry tanks? or more fry's with more grow-outs? primary fish are African cichlids tho my wife wants to do some fancy guppies and platties any ideas on sizes of the tanks?

just so you know nz bio security treatments for anesthetize fish says fridge for 5 hours to induce torpor then freezer for 24 hours also of note fish in international flights are often put in torpor by use of cold with about 97% survival rate of transit

for those of interest http://www.theaquatools.com/building-your-aquarium has a little calculator type in size of tank will come up with thickness of glass weight without water and weight with water the area of glass used the volume of the tank and you can adjust the safety factor

just a question i understand that the mortality rate is very high in quarantine but why is it so high? is it because of fish killing each other or bad water problems, disease? whats the usual reasons?
-
Put it this way.. Yes it's hard to get started but if you stop when it gets hard you won't get anywhere and if it can't work no one anywhere would be able to do it, yes it's a dif environment but its been done before, a few times as I can tell ..I don't see problems to stop me I see many solutions and challenges to overcome
-
Now that's some indispensable advice! Thanks very much hopefully I won't have to deal with that but I expect I will!
-
Yea I won't bother with the run of the mill fish hat you find in every fish store it's mostly African cichlids or unusual or hard to find fish and wild caught fish there's no point in getting something that another person has the market covered in
-
I kinda generalised for the prices eg guppies 15cents neons 12cents mollies 17cents angels 20cents even wild caught most 30cents tho discus and cats range from 30cents to $20, all the prices I've quoted are USD and rough prices as dif sizes are dif prices most of these quotes are 3-5cm
-
Yea that's what I'm trying to figure out how many will come in a shipment normal tropicals seem about 30c each but with a min order of $500 required (and another $500 for shipping costs ) gives me a heap of fish about 1700 at that price each fish being about 5cm long is there enough tank space? (That's all just from quote from one supplier other places may do smaller orders but I'm only in contact with 4 suppliers at the moment with price lists
-
Lol if I can find a reason for it ill use it just for you Graham! It might get me out of a pickle!
-
That's right basically they say surfaces of things can be done with dish wash liquid (their quote in biohazard standards!) but yea the water is a different story they were the ones that recommended the UV light so ill have a chat to them to find out about if the water was pre treated but from what they were saying it didn't sound like it is but otherwise the HTH might not be a option for me because I don't have the land area to dispose it not the ground so it would have to go into the sewage and I don't know if that much chlorine can go down there because it can kill the bacteria in the system and make a stink the council won't like that
-
I do have another question tho will 12 tanks 1000x400x400 be enough to hold a shipping of fish? Of will I need 18 of that size (18 is the max size I can fit of that size )
-
Yeah it's close to how you said about the workers it says at least 1 from the house must work there and a max of 4 people they don't say anything about sales just a max signage of 1 sign of 600 and only one sign same max size can be put on the sidewalk
-
HTH the swimming pool filtration? i guess it does make sense because swimming pools do require level 2 sanitation level 2 sanitation can be achieved by running the water much slower than the rated rate of the inline UV filters (so if you can prove the rate of water flow through the filter is slow enough to get that level of filtration there shouldn't be a problem an no need to spend 2k! )
-
your right as it is sitting right now it wouldn't be legal to put fish tanks in there for anything other than looking at but ill get it up to scratch just got to get the right things, plans and ideas underway! (and that was lucky for you!)
-
so my latest update is if i put in plumbing i will have to get a building consent (i don't plan on doing plumbing i have a way around that ) the next thing about the council is any residential area that does breeding of fish needs a resource consent so even without the quarantine aspect of it i would still need that anyway ($1500) i haven't been in to see MAF yet because i need to finish my business plan out on paper once that's done i can go see them show them my operators manual and see what they say about it. so far all is looking good tho! it may slow a bit for the next week just to get some money together oh i also found some 50mm poly for $14.40! and 25mm for $7! so that will be cool after i speak with MAF or about the same time ill be buying and putting up the insulation and the lino for the floor and depending on what MAF says dealing with the other things they want to happen so far its all good and going to plan!
-
i know this is a old topic but have you tried using egg incubators? you use them primarily for African cichlids but the principle is the same most eggs need to have the water moving over them to keep them cool that would be why they are dieing or going white so quick you can you-tube how to make the incubators it would only cost about $5 per incubator if you search "striping African cichlids" the incubators should come up too i hope this helps or you have had success!
-
that sounds like a little bit more sense, its quite heavy duty ill have to do some hunting and ask them about it when i see them but im sure i can find one and i can always get it in from America cheaper from some contacts there too
-
i will be going back to MAF and asking a few questions but when i spoke to them i told them its a tin shed and they were happy with it and ive worked out there is enough room in there for all that and im not too worried about water splash from tank to tank ill have dividers up for that mixed chems can be done inside (if needed tho i don't intend on mixing any chems) freezer doesn't need to be big and treated water is delt with through the use of UV pass through filters so plenty of room and ppe can still go inside if not it wont be hard to put a 1mte by 1mtr shed in front of the door for a ante room and they seem happy so far with what Ive got oh i will also get the permit for bis in residential and quarantine in residential the breeding area shouldn't be a problem for location to the quarantine as they said most places have breeding rooms in the next room to there quarantine rooms
