  1. So after being sick of waiting for wood to sink i've done this..... surprised how little time it took to get the water to boiling point and how easy it was to keep the bath boiling. it boiled for about an hour and a half. then had to add more water coz the wood was starting to show. so i've left it for the time being for the fire to burn out (yes i'm checking it regularly) and i'll check it in the morning. took a couple of pics on my phone so once i find the cord to plug it into my puter i'll post them
  2. i don't pretend to know anything about this but have been reading along.. just a thought. with what you were saying about making the rest of the tank out of other stuff but the front still having to be glass... is it not at all possible to have it made out of clear Perspex? (hope i've spelt that right) surely you could get a piece made to the size you want and get them to make it say 20mm thick? i ofcourse don't know the cost of this or if it can even be done. Heh if i'm wrong i'll just shut my yap
  3. i know tiger barbs can get up round 6 cm thats what i've wanted from the start... my firemouths are only round 4 cm at the mo. and i'll get tbars round that size too
  4. TBH i don't want africans atm... with all the research i did and questions i asked about them i realised that i need a kinda big tank to keep what i wanna keep with them 600 L at least. so when i get back into them and i will get back into them it will be when i have the right set up for them... yes lionheads are weird. Yeah thats what i was thinking. plus my partner has just bought a 160 litre for her loan black more so now the 140 litre is spare and i can turn that into my active barb tank
  5. i guess the danger is i'm heading to a species only tank... i really want a school of super active fish in with the cichlids.. thats why i was going for tiger barbs, as they get to decentish size. i really wouldn't want them getting munched on though. the local garden store has (or at least had) a tank full of checker board silver dollars. but i think they would get too big for the tank. yeah david i've defiently decided to stay away from the salvini's for now... its such a shame that there are so many awesome fish out there... makes it damn hard to decide!
  6. ok one last question guys... since disgustipated mentioned t bars i've looked them up. BEATIFUL! they are in the same catagory as firemouth for agression wise so they should be ok right?
  7. it still takes your full concentration away from the road.. i guess you can say you'll never be 100% attentive to the road but i just think its abit ironic. ahahahaha
  8. we all know this is true.. so can someone tell me why they put signs up on the side of the road telling us this? A driver looks up to read them and takes eyes off the road... so aren't those signs distracting drivers??
  9. i was gonna sugest some barbs... black ruby ones though..
  10. So in other words i have to be prepared to invest a good sum of money (i'm guessing juvies would range from $20 - $30 each) in getting the right fish. trying to sell the more agressive ones on and at least get back what i payed would be extremely difficult.. especially down here. Budget doesn't allow me to do that so i will stick to the less agressive fish for the time being haha its funny up until joining this forum i thought 300 litres was a massive tank..
  11. in a 4 foot 280 - 300 litre tank? :smot: ps am keeping an eye on your big tank build thread.. hows it going?
  12. not at the moment but i can take one when i get home tonight
  13. got driftwood in a bath outside being waterlogged.. naturally its become covered in algae.. is this type of green algae gonna harm my fish if i put the wood in the tank as is? or are my plec's gonna go mental over it? easy enough to clean it off the wood but i don't see the point if its a good food sorce. cheers
  14. ack your last photo won't load!
  15. Ok so time for an update.. the breeding colony of electric yellows is finally gone :happy1: :happy2: . took them up to dunedin to a guy on monday. must say i am really quite dissapointed with dunedin's "biggest pet centre". even more dissapointed with the fish selection at the only place in Oamaru to stock tropical fish... (went up there for a job interview). Still have mr bgk for sale. tank looks a bit empty at the mo with just two small firemouths, knifey and 4 plecs in it. my albino rainbow shark somehow managed to find its way into katies tank... look nice and plump after a good feed of baby guppy's (that'll teach ya!). A member has pointed me in the direction of maybe purchacing a red hump earth eater (can't be bothered finding its scientific name) if i can get one i am wondering if an extremely fine gravel substrate will be ok for it? as all the research i have done says sand... drift wood is still in the bath soaking.. still not waterlogged. am seriously considering moving the bath and lighting a fire under it to boil it.. Why does this make wood sink far more quickly? i think thats about it for now.. cheers
  16. we've been told if a fish dies within a day of buying it from there to let them know and take in a sample of water and if it comes back good they will give credit for it.. its not a quarentee but its something
  17. hmmm maybe the local garden store will be able to get one for me... cheers
  18. you can get your hands on them then? or am i best to either wait till chch or ring hhff? again according to the net i would have to have sand substrate as apposed to fine gravel?
  19. google corrected the spelling for me... lovely fish.. whats one retail for? i want to use a fine grave for my substrate (at least at this stage). i would have to use sand if if wanted one of these right? i know i won't find one down here but i guess its something to look for when we go to chch in late march
  20. oh wow.... hah i guess i will stay away from them then
  21. ive read that salvini seldom get over 15 cm in aquiriums. i thought firemouths and the barbs would get big enough not to fit in its mouth. yes i agree what tbars?
