  1. kh @ 8.0 aint that low! spot on really. i got some white xenia you can have some frags off when you come up to aucks later this week.
  2. ...and dont jump to the conclusion that RTN is only caused by low alk!
  3. pretty much identical to me although no kalk no im on zeovit. similar with the dosing, on a timer, feeds from a 220 litre barrel for 10 minutes every hour throughout the night. auto-top off would be nice
  4. http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2002-05/sh/feature/index.php I drip my reactor outlet into the sump right where water flows from the refugium (plenty of bubbles) Run the pH of the effluent at about 6.5 - 6.7 for optimal results.
  5. why not? he may have cleansed well first
  6. that rocks, is it the same as a brittle star?
  7. aww c'mon pies, prove it, i dont believe you
  8. I love option 6!!! - but I think that would be more painful seeing your tank emptying 5 hours away than coming home to it!!! depends how quick your reef mates are I guess
  9. the gurgle-noise-detector-2000 ???
  10. Well as I designed a while back but have yet to implement, I will have a redundant pipe setup incase of any 'emergencies'. Essentially a 2nd hole in the tank just above the maximum water level of the durso that is t'd up to the rest of the overflow system as shown here: This should mean still a quiet overflow but lessens the risk of spillage incase the durso gets clogged. We've got new carpet is going in the whole house early next year (once rennovations are complete) Murphy's law would mean my time for a flood would be a few days after the carpet goes in What can happen will happen so Im not taking any chances
  11. well i am impressed, more than 3 words AND a photo in a single post. nice work steve
  12. neither pies or I were commenting on your AVERAGE plumbing, simply stating WE would need to have a HUGE snail to plug up our durso's. i thought you'd be used to the smart arse comments on this site by now anyway steve?
  13. it is true, saw a scientific doco on it on sky. very interesting, they "hang out" in the bottom of the sea where volcanic lava spills out onto the ocean floor. they might genetically mutate and become the superbugs of the future
  14. sort of the same, 40mm. thats a big arse snail - anything that size i'd sell to the french and become rich
  15. is this thread not titled "natural sea water????" does natural mean its from the ocean? hang on, have i misinterpreted something here? am i supposed to have salt in my tank? i need a vodka, my head doesnt hurt enough from reading this crap.
  16. no need if you've got an overflow comb and cover and a few snails going down the hydroslide to the sump is a good thing
  17. thanks for that pointless comment. so you are saying ONLY those people that use ASW can maintain a healthy tank with colourful acros and ONLY those that use NSW have poor water conditions and are overrun with bad algae? riiiiight.... its just like making a statement that "there is more good in seawater than in artificial water"
  18. lets face it - how anal can one be? its water from the ocean - as long as its sourced from a reliable location who cares? you could just keep it simple and put it straight in (as I and many others do) or go to extremes and put it through UV, carbon, skim it for 3 months etc. changing 10% or 20% is not a great concern. changing 50%+ in one hit maybe.
